Against Greece, Veljko Paunović's side led from the 4th minute through an Andrija Živković goal, but the visitors scored on 74 minutes and in the fifth minute of added time. Serbia also lost to the Netherlands in Belgrade, and both matches ended 1-2. Paunović was particularly stung by the first evening: in his words, Serbia pushed too hard for a winner late on, opened up and were punished.
Paunović describes the current period as a reconstruction phase. The key squad decision ahead of the Nations League was the return of Dušan Tadić: the 37-year-old midfielder had not played for the national team for two years and was immediately handed the captain's armband. Against the Netherlands, Tadić came on at half-time alongside Luka Jović, and in the very first attack of the second half Jović equalised.

Joshua Kimmich is not in the squad for either of Germany's two October matches, so someone will be leading the side out in Munich as the 117th captain in the team's history. Strahinja Pavlović went off in the second matchday at the 71st minute with a muscle problem, and according to the Italian press, the Milan defender will be rested for the Germany match. Dušan Vlahović has complained of calf pain and the manager is not counting on him for any of the four fixtures in this window. Aleksandar Mitrović, Nikola Milenković and Predrag Rajković have all missed out on the squad through injury. After the first two matchdays, the squad was adjusted: defender Ognjen Mimović was called up from the under-21 side, Vojvodina goalkeeper Dragan Rosić received an additional call-up, while Jovan Milošević, Lazar Nikolić and Stefan Bukinac were released.
