Armenia have gained the momentum they needed at the start of the Nations League.

Armenia had a thoroughly poor World Cup 2026 qualifying campaign. They picked up just three points across the entire cycle, and their matches against Portugal were a nightmare - losing 0:5 and 1:9. Friendly matches in 2026 against CIS sides did nothing to lift the mood either: two draws and a defeat. So a good start in the Nations League mattered a great deal to Armenia, especially as the group is far from the toughest, and with things going their way the team could challenge for first place and promotion.

They handled that first task comfortably, beating Latvia 2:0 at home. And the win was fully deserved on the balance of play: 14:5 in shots, 4:1 on target, 3:0 in clear chances, and 1.37 against 0.36 in xG. Latvia offered almost nothing in attack, so even talking about a possible goal for the visitors would have been something of a stretch.

Montenegro have confirmed their strong form in an official fixture.

Montenegro looked fairly confident in their 2026 friendlies, and they produced good results not only against weaker opposition. In June, for example, they beat Bulgaria 1-0 away from home and then drew 2-2 with Slovakia. They went into the Nations League in decent shape, needing only to carry that form into competitive football.

Montenegro managed to do exactly that. In the opening round they beat Cyprus 2-1 at home. Although they had to come from behind at some point during the match, the final result accurately reflects what happened on the pitch. Montenegro dominated for most of the game, created a large number of chances and had 19 shots at goal. Their xG was 3.14, so with better finishing the scoreline could easily have been more emphatic. But the three points were what mattered.

    Latest news

    Armenia

❌ Armenia have one confirmed absence ahead of their match against Montenegro. Junior Bueno picked up an injury in the game against Latvia and was substituted at half-time, after which Armenia's head coach confirmed that the defender will not feature in the remaining matches of the current international window. Narek Hovhannisyan also left the pitch with an injury, but his absence against Montenegro has not yet been officially confirmed, so the midfielder's participation remains in doubt.

    Montenegro

✅ Montenegro have no new injuries following their match against Cyprus. However, on 26 September there was a change to the squad: the coaching staff called up midfielder Marko Šimun from Sutjeska as an additional option ahead of the next fixture.

    🔁 Update - 28 September, 11:54 UTC:

    • Midfielder Milan Vukotić (Partizan), who came on as a substitute in the match against Cyprus, has picked up an injury that will keep him out for the rest of the cycle. Marko Šimun has been called up specifically in his place. However, this news does not significantly affect the pre-match outlook.

    🔁 Update - 28 September, 12:40 UTC:

    • Mirko Vučinić announced a large-scale squad rotation at the pre-match press conference. "We will change at least one player in each line. We'll see if more adjustments are needed. We will play with three forwards," the head coach of the Montenegrin national team said.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Predicted starting XI for Armenia: Cancarevic - Bandikyan, Piloyan, Bueno, Harutyunyan, Tiknizyan - Serobyan, Iwu, Spertsyan, Shaghoyan - Miranyan.

📋 Predicted starting XI for Montenegro: Popovic - Roganovic, Savic, Vujacic, Gasevic - Jankovic, Bulatovic, Adzic - Osmajic, Krstovic - Jovetic.

    ⚽️ Goals Prediction

Armenia's matches have not been particularly high-scoring of late: no more than two goals were scored in 6 of their last 8 games. Against Montenegro, the hosts are unlikely to want to get drawn into an open shootout. We are therefore going with Total Goals - Under 2.5 at 1.65*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Montenegro's matches regularly produce plenty of corners. In 7 of their last 8 official away games, the total exceeded 9.5 corners. It is also worth noting that Armenia's match against Latvia produced 12 corners between the two sides. The chances of this bet landing again look high. The odds are 1.90*.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

In the first round, both Armenia and Montenegro were fairly disciplined. Both sides picked up just one yellow card each, committing 10 and 7 fouls respectively. This match does carry greater importance in the standings, but a sharp rise in bookings is not something to expect. Total Yellow Cards - Under 3.5 is worth considering here.

    🚀 Player Stats Bet

One of Armenia's key players at the moment is Eduard Spertsyan. He maintained a high level in the RPL over several consecutive seasons, and after moving to Al-Ahli he has continued to perform in the Saudi Pro League, with 2 goals and 2 assists in seven matches. In the first round against Latvia, the midfielder was also prominent and registered an assist. Armenia's ability to create danger in front of Montenegro's goal will depend to a significant extent on how active he is going forward. It is therefore worth taking a risk on Eduard Spertsyan to Score at 4.20*.

    😱 Risky Bet

There is not a huge gap in quality between these two sides, and Armenia's home advantage further narrows what is already a small difference. The match could quite easily end in a draw. Draw and Total Goals - Under 2.5 is available at 3.95*.

    🎯 Reliable Bet

If you need a low-odds selection for an accumulator, Total Goals - Under 3.5 at 1.24* is worth considering. This type of bet has a strong hit rate here. No more than three goals were scored in 6 of Armenia's last 7 official home matches. Montenegro show a similar pattern in the Nations League: this bet has landed in 12 of their last 13 matches in the competition.

👀 If the Match Goes Off Script

Any game can go off script, and this one is no exception. If one side scores early, the other will be forced to push forward in numbers, which will inevitably open the game up. In that scenario, Total Goals - Over 2.5 at 2.26* could well come in.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editorial Prediction

According to the bookmakers, there is no clear favourite for this match. Yes, Montenegro have more players with experience at a high level, but the game is in Yerevan, and away from home the team are far from consistently confident. The 2023-2025 period is telling: Montenegro put together a run of nine consecutive away defeats, and in many of those matches they could not even get on the scoresheet. Armenia at home are unlikely to open up recklessly and hand their opponents space, especially in a match of this importance. We therefore expect cautious football and are going with Total Goals - Under 2.5. The predicted score is 1-1.
