Ukraine vs Hungary Prediction 5 October 2026
๐ Over the course of a week, Ukraine went from a composed win in Budapest to a painful 0-3 defeat against Northern Ireland. Hungary moved in the opposite direction: they started with a loss, drew 0-0 in Belfast, and finally picked up three points against Georgia. Heading into matchday four of the Nations League, both sides are level on four points, but in very different moods. Northern Ireland have already pulled three points clear, so another slip-up would seriously complicate the fight for first place.
This match is a home fixture for Ukraine in name only. It will be played in Trnava, Slovakia, at the Anton Malatinskรฝ Stadium. Both sides are playing their fourth match in 11 days. They also met very recently, so each team is well aware of the other's weaknesses.
๐ Don't miss the key pre-match updates: we'll be adding information on line-ups, injuries and any other developments that could affect the balance of the match.
Hungary lost their opening match but managed to create more chances.
๐ The two sides have met only once - on 25 September in Budapest in the opening round of the current Nations League. Ukraine won thanks to a Danylo Sikan goal late in the first half, then held on to their narrow lead after the break despite being reduced to ten men.
The scoreline, however, does not reflect the run of play. Hungary generated 2.03 xG against Ukraine's 1.38, had more possession, had 17 shots to Ukraine's 10, and won the corners 4-2. Ukraine simply made better use of their chances.
Head-to-head statistics Ukraine - Hungary

Ukraine struggled to create chances and suffered defeat.
Ukraine's Nations League campaign started almost perfectly: a 1-0 win over Hungary, then a goalless draw in Tbilisi. The problem came at the other end - their attack virtually disappeared. Against Georgia they managed just 0.21 xG, and then produced only 0.62 xG against Northern Ireland. Two matches in a row without a goal.
Before the Northern Ireland game, that could be put down to a defensive approach, but in the third match the defence fell apart. Ukraine conceded as early as the 9th minute, then again on 22 minutes, and shipped another after the break. Andrea Maldera made sweeping changes to the side - nine alterations compared to the second round. But the fresh legs did not translate into better quality.
Match Results: Ukraine

Hungary spent three matches searching for a breakthrough and finally found the right combination.
Hungary also had a difficult start to the tournament. After losing to Ukraine, they travelled to Belfast and drew 0-0. Two rounds, no goals and just one point - not the start Marco Rossi had been counting on. But against Georgia the football was sharper.
Hungary had 26 shots and generated 1.81 xG, while allowing their opponents just 0.50. The winner came from a Milos Kerkez strike. More importantly, the team showed they could get into the penalty area without endlessly recycling possession, and they regularly threatened the defence with crosses from wide. Rossi himself said after the match that the plan had worked, though he acknowledged the finishing still needed to improve.

Predicted Lineups
๐ Predicted starting XI for Ukraine: Riznyk - Krupskyi, Zabarnyi, Bondar, Mykhaylichenko - Brazhko, Ocheretko, Sudakov - Tsygankov, Yaremchuk, Zubkov.
๐ Predicted starting XI for Hungary: Toth - Osvath, Orban, Csinger, Nagy - Schafer, Csongvai - Lukacs, Szoboszlai, A. Toth - M. Tรณth.
โฝ Goals Prediction
The first three matchdays have turned Group B2 into a contest of defences. Both Ukraine and Hungary have scored just one goal each, and in all six matches involving these two sides, at least one team has failed to score.
Tellingly, even clear territorial dominance has not guaranteed goals. Hungary had 26 shots against Georgia and scored just once. Ukraine won 7 corners against Northern Ireland and did not score at all. For both teams to find the net, they would need to sharply improve their finishing at the same time. The pick: Both Teams to Score - No at 1.88*.
๐ฉ Corners Prediction
Ukraine are averaging 3 corners per game in this Nations League campaign, Hungary around 4.7. Yet the combined total has stayed below 9 corners in 5 of the 6 matches involving these two sides. The only exception was Hungary's meeting with Georgia, where the hosts alone took 8.
The rematch may well revert to the more familiar pattern. Ukraine do not build attacks through constant crossing, and Hungary, once they have a lead, are capable of slowing the game down and closing off space. Our prediction: Total Corners - Under 8.5 at 1.80*.
๐จ Yellow Cards Prediction
Ukraine have had a feisty tournament so far. They have picked up at least three bookings in each of their three matchdays, with an average of 4 yellow cards per game. The first meeting with Hungary ended in a mass confrontation and a red card for Oleksandr Nazarenko.
The next match is unlikely to be any calmer. The points are worth more now, and Ukraine's defence will have to line up in a changed combination without two of their regular players. We're taking Ukraine Team Total - Over 2.5 Yellow Cards at 1.80*.
๐ฏ Player Bet
For Viktor Tsygankov, Trnava is not entirely unfamiliar territory. In June 2023, Ukraine played a home match against Malta at the Anton Malatinskรฝ Stadium, and it was Tsygankov who scored the only goal that day. The team are returning to that ground again now, but with greater responsibility resting on one of their attacking leaders.
Sikan is suspended, so Ukraine will need to find someone else capable of finishing moves up front. Tsygankov has played in all three of Ukraine's Nations League matches this campaign, is regularly involved in set-pieces, and remains one of their most dangerous players around the penalty area. Our selection: Viktor Tsygankov to Score.
๐ฑ Risky Bet
The group is unusually tight: Ukraine and Hungary both have 4 points, and the visitors' goal difference after three matchdays is exactly 1:1. Neither side has yet shown the kind of football that would suggest one of them will dominate for the full 90 minutes.
The fixture schedule also encourages caution. This is the fourth match in a short spell, and Ukraine, nominally the home side, are again playing in Slovakia. If the score is level going into the final third of the match, neither team may be willing to risk everything for one extra point. We're backing the Draw at 3.20*.
๐ก๏ธ Safe Bet
Not one of the six matches involving Ukraine and Hungary in this group has produced four goals. In fact, 5 of those meetings ended with a maximum of one goal. The only sharp outlier was Ukraine's recent 0-3 defeat to Northern Ireland. Even if one side has another poor spell, genuinely open football would require a significant change in finishing. We're playing Total Goals - Under 3.5 at 1.25*.
๐ If the Match Goes Off-Script
Ukraine's last game showed how quickly a careful plan can fall apart. Northern Ireland scored twice by the 22nd minute, and after that start, the usual cautious approach was gone before half-time was even reached.
Hungary have also scored before the break recently -Milos Kerkez put them ahead against Georgia in the 35th minute. If an early goal forces the losing side to open up again, a second could follow quickly. We'll take Total Goals - Over 1.5 in the First Half at 3.00*.

โญ Editor's Prediction
Hungary are progressing through the tournament more steadily than their four points might suggest. After losing their opening match, they have kept clean sheets in two consecutive games, and the meeting with Georgia was their best performance in attack. Rossi has finally found a structure that works - one where Dominik Szoboszlai is not required to single-handedly create every dangerous moment.
Ukraine, meanwhile, have to recover from a heavy defeat while also reshaping their squad. Sikan, Matviyenko and Mykolenko are unavailable, and there is no real home advantage in Trnava. Hungary already showed in Budapest that they are capable of causing this defence serious problems, and the visitors' form looks even more convincing now. Predicted score: 0-1. Editor's prediction: Hungary to win - Draw No Bet.
