Genesio took charge on 1 July, and by the time the fourth round was done he was already addressing the club's hierarchy through the press. After the defeat at Rennes, the manager asked who exactly Marseille were supposed to be competing with in this league, and added that it was not his place to answer that question. According to a Marseille insider, the club considered that reaction unnecessary. The only one currently providing answers on the pitch is Amine Gouiri: he has scored four of Marseille's six Ligue 1 goals, with two braces.

The champions have had a stuttering start. The Trophée des Champions went to Lens, and the first three rounds of Ligue 1 brought PSG just two points. Things began to turn last week. First PSG thrashed Slovan 6-1 in the Champions League, then four days later claimed their first league win of the season away at Brest. Luis Enrique's side now have five points - half as many as the three teams at the top.
Those three points at Brest did not come easily. The hosts came close to levelling on more than one occasion: Kamoury Doumbia hit the outside of the post after an error by Nuno Mendes, and Matvei Safonov dealt with the rest. It was PSG's first clean sheet of the season. Luis Enrique was still unhappy after the match, saying he expects considerably more from his players.

❓ Génesio's main problem is in midfield. Tochukwu Nnadi injured his knee on 30 August against Monaco, and the manager himself said there was little point expecting him back before the international break. Geoffroy Kondogbia also went off in that match with a thigh injury. Génesio has said he is recovering faster than expected, but he was not included in the squad for the Beşiktaş game. With Quinten Timber gone, the manager has few options in the middle, so Højbjerg and Abdelli will most likely start in the holding midfield roles again. Marseille have no suspended players. The source reports that Génésio is planning to move Amine Harit into the number ten role following four consecutive defeats. Kylian Abdallah and Igor Paixão are set to support Amine Gouiri on the flanks. Gomes has featured in five matches this season, contributing one assist.

❓ The key question mark is Achraf Hakimi. The Moroccan went off in the match at Brest on the 39th minute, and tests revealed a minor thigh injury. On Friday the club confirmed that the defender was working individually on the pitch but had not yet rejoined the main group. If Hakimi is not fit in time, Warren Zaïre-Emery is the most likely candidate to fill in at right back. Ilya Zabarnyi and Senny Mayulu were left out of the squad for Brest by the coaching staff, and their availability for Sunday is also in doubt. Third-choice goalkeeper Alessandro Longoni is recovering from a quadriceps injury. There are no suspensions. The French press expect Safonov to start in goal again after a strong performance at Brest.
