Those last two matches suggest Werder are capable of adapting to how a game unfolds. Against Leipzig they took control after a strong start and managed the game comfortably, while in Cologne they had to build pressure gradually and look for openings through the flanks and set pieces. Their defence, however, remains vulnerable: they have conceded six goals in three matches, and they look particularly exposed when opponents have space to counter quickly.

Ahead of the Augsburg match, it will be important for Werder to maintain the intensity they showed against Leipzig and not allow their visitors to drag them into a slow, attritional game. At home, Werder can be more aggressive and press from the first minute, and Füllkrug's presence makes them a threat from crosses and set pieces. That said, they will need to be more disciplined without the ball, as Augsburg have already shown early in the season that they can make opponents pay for their mistakes.

Füllkrug's role in Werder's attacking structure deserves particular attention. He has already scored an important goal in Cologne and remains the primary target for balls into the box. Another notable aspect is how Werder have responded when the game has turned against them. After the Freiburg thrashing, they did not sit back or play cautiously at home to Leipzig - they went straight at them with high intensity. In Cologne the situation was the opposite: going behind forced them to gradually increase the pressure, and they got their reward after half-time. Against Augsburg, the challenge is different again - Werder will need to stop their opponents from sitting back and waiting for an opportunity after conceding, and to control the tempo themselves.

Augsburg are one of the more interesting teams of the early season, particularly in terms of how their results have come about. After three matchdays they have seven points, with wins over Schalke and Eintracht and a draw with Bayer. In each of their last two matches they conceded first and then turned the game around. In Frankfurt, Augsburg were losing 0-1 but scored four times after the break to win 4-1. The pattern repeated against Bayer: after going 0-1 down, Michael Gregoritsch scored twice, though the visitors were spared only by Patrik Schick's goal on the 89th minute.

The Bayer match illustrated particularly well how Manuel Baum's side function. In the first half Augsburg struggled to move the ball through their opponents' organised defence, but after the break they raised their intensity sharply. As early as the 50th minute, Hennes Behrens found Gregoritsch with a through ball. Five minutes later the Austrian scored his second from a corner. That is an important detail: Augsburg are dangerous not only in quick attacks but also from set pieces.

Gregoritsch has become one of the standout figures of the early season. His brace against Bayer made him Augsburg's all-time top scorer in the Bundesliga, with 38 goals for the club. Around him there are Behrens, Ibrahimović and others capable of creating chances in secondary phases. That structure means Baum is not entirely dependent on a single forward.

Another positive is squad stability. Ahead of the Bayer match, Baum named an unchanged starting XI and bench from the win over Eintracht. The team were able to play a second consecutive match with virtually the same personnel without losing their second-half intensity. That matters particularly ahead of the trip to Bremen, where the hosts are capable of imposing a high tempo.

That said, Augsburg cannot be described as a team that fully controls matches. Against Bayer they allowed their opponents to equalise late on, and before that they had been forced to come from behind twice. But the ability to stay in the game after conceding is currently one of their defining qualities. In Bremen that factor could prove significant, especially if Werder score first.
