    Head-to-Head

📊 Shakhtar and AEK have never met in an official match. There is an indirect connection between the two sides, however, and that is Zubkov. The Ukraine international winger left Shakhtar for Trabzonspor, before AEK bought him from the Turkish club this summer and signed him on a contract until 2030. Zubkov scored his first goal for his new club in the Greek Cup, when AEK thrashed Panserraikos 8-1. Shakhtar captain Mykola Matviyenko admitted that the squad are taking the reunion with their former teammate very seriously. "I know all his tricks," the defender added.

Shakhtar: a three-week break and goals from distance

Shakhtar's only defeat in the Ukrainian Premier League came at the end of August - a 0:2 home loss to Polissia. Since then, Arda Turan's side have gone unbeaten, though they remain a point behind the Zhytomyr club, who have also played one game more. In the Champions League, Shakhtar began with a draw in Eindhoven, where Sergiño Dest equalised shortly after half-time. Before the international break, Shakhtar thrashed LNZ. Between 20 September and 9 October, the team had only a friendly against Kryvbas.

Their return to action was confident: Shakhtar beat Veres 3:0 in Rivne. Against the opposition's low block, Matviyenko said the best approach was shooting from distance. The captain himself curled the ball into the top corner from outside the box - his first goal since December 2024. Pedro Henrique also struck from range after a corner routine and found the near post. Turan regards the win as important for the team's morale.

AEK seek revenge against their Super Cup nemesis

AEK won the Greek title in Marko Nikolić's first season at the club. The Serb began the new campaign with a setback, losing the Super Cup to OFI on penalties. Since then, AEK have not lost. After six Superleague rounds they have four wins and two draws, having conceded three goals, and sit one point behind leaders Panathinaikos. In the Champions League, their opponents are yet to score against them - neither Levski in the two play-off legs nor LASK.

On Saturday AEK met OFI again and won 3-0. Nikolić noted that OFI were the only side to have beaten AEK since last October. All three goals came from set pieces, though the manager said his team could have scored in other ways too. Winger Koutsias was given a starting place in that match. Nikolić suggested that his earlier absences from the team were down to uncertainty over whether he would stay at the club or leave.

    Latest news

    Shakhtar Donetsk

❓ Key central defenders Matviyenko and Valeriy Bondar did not play in Ukraine's last match. According to the captain, both are more or less physically fine. There are also questions surrounding the manager. Insiders reported that Turan could take charge of the Turkey national team in early November, though they later reported the opposite: an offer exists, but the manager is planning to turn it down.

    AEK Athens

❓ Thomas Strakosha will not be ready for the matches against Shakhtar and Manchester City, Nikolić confirmed on 10 October. The first-choice goalkeeper has a wrist injury, with Alberto Brignoli taking his place. Forward Barnabás Varga injured his knee while on international duty with Hungary. "We are racing against time with Varga," the manager said, adding that the club will not take any risks. Defender Lazaros Rota has recovered and played against OFI. AEK will remain in England until their match against City on 20 October. Their league fixture against Atromitos has been rescheduled at the club's request.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Predicted starting XI for Shakhtar: Riznyk - Vinicius Tobias, Bondar, Matviyenko, Pedro Henrique - Kryskiv, Marlon Gomes - Pedrinho, Alisson, Newertton - Kaua Elias.

📋 Predicted starting XI for AEK:  Brignoli - Rota, Moukoudi, Relvas, Pilios - Kutesa, Marin, Kairinen, Koita - Majer, Jovic.

    ⚽️ Goals prediction

Four or more goals combined have not featured in any of Shakhtar's last nine official matches. Even against Olkhovtsy, LNZ and Veres, the Ukrainian club scored exactly three. Turan's side have also stopped conceding: the last time they let one in was in Eindhoven. At home, AEK have thrashed Aris (5-0) and Levski (4-0), but their away record tells a different story. In their last five away matches, the Greeks have seen no more than three goals. We are not expecting a fourth goal in London. The bet is Total Goals - Under 3.5.

    🚩 Corners prediction

More than nine corners have occurred in only two of Shakhtar's last 10 official matches. Turan's side deliver a high number: 47 corners taken against 35 by their opponents. However, 13 of those came against Rivne, where Veres played more than half the match with ten men. Over the same period, AEK matches have produced 76 corners combined, with 47 of those belonging to the Greeks. Ten or more corners have appeared in AEK matches on only three occasions. We think that threshold will hold in London. The bet is Total Corners - Under 9.5.

    🟨 Yellow cards prediction

More than four yellow cards have been shown in Shakhtar's matches only once in their last 10 official games - nine in Eindhoven. Across those ten matches, Turan's players have received 17 bookings and their opponents 16. AEK's numbers are identical: 17 of their own and 16 for their opponents. Five or more yellows have appeared in AEK matches twice - six each away at Kifisia and Volos. We are not expecting a fifth booking in this game. The bet is Total Yellow Cards - Under 4.5.

    🚀 Player statistic bet

Pedrinho has scored in two consecutive official Shakhtar matches. The Brazilian found the net against LNZ before the break and then opened the scoring in Rivne. Neverton struck from distance, the Veres goalkeeper parried, and Pedrinho won the battle with the defender to tap the ball into the net. He did not play in Eindhoven, so the match against AEK could be his debut in this Champions League campaign. The timing looks convenient: AEK's backup goalkeeper Brignoli is expected to start. The bet is Pedrinho to Score.

    😱 Risky bet

Shakhtar are unbeaten in six consecutive official matches, since Polissya took three points off them at the end of August. AEK's run is longer: this season the Greeks have only dropped the Super Cup, and that was on penalties. In the Super League, AEK have dropped points only away from home - at Kifisia and Asteras. If neither side ends their run, there will be no winner. The bet is Draw at 3.50*.

    🎯 Reliable bet

AEK have scored in ten consecutive official matches. The last time the Greeks failed to find the net was in mid-August, in the first play-off leg against Levski in Sofia. Since then, Nikolić's side have also scored in the Champions League, beating LASK (1-0). This bet only needs one AEK goal, regardless of the final result. It would even come in if AEK lose 1-3. The bet is AEK Team Total Goals - Over 0.5.

👀 If the match doesn't go to plan

We are expecting a tight game in which each side scores once. That changes if Shakhtar go ahead quickly. The Greeks would then need to push forward, and without Varga it will be harder for them to respond. In that case, in-play keep an eye on a Shakhtar win and three or more goals for the nominal home side. The signal for those bets is a two-goal lead by half-time.

*Odds are approximate and may vary across different bookmakers.

    📌 Editorial Prediction

Shakhtar have scored in six consecutive official matches. Even the Champions League opener away at PSV in Eindhoven didn't break that run. AEK's defence away from home is particularly vulnerable: they have conceded in all three of their away Super League matches. At the same time, AEK themselves have scored in all six rounds of the league this season. That leads us to expect a goal at each end. Our bet is Both Teams to Score - Yes. Predicted score: 1-1.
