🔊 Alex De Minaur and Brandon Nakashima meet in the Washington ATP 500 quarter-finals - a rematch of last year's meeting at the same stage of the same tournament. If history repeats, the Australian goes through again and defends the title. But five weeks ago they played again, same category, London grass - and Nakashima won. This one isn't straightforward.

    Head-to-Head

📊 Nakashima leads the head-to-head 2-1. On hard courts, though, it's level - one win apiece.

    Alex De Minaur Player Overview

Alex de Minaur holds the all-time record for wins at ATP 500 events: since 2023, the Australian has gone 61-0 at that level. This season is no different - he took the title on the Rotterdam indoor hard courts, and in Washington he beat his most difficult opponent on tour, Stefanos Tsitsipas (6:4, 3:6, 6:3), then fellow Australian Cruz Hewitt (6:2, 6:3).

Physically, de Minaur doesn't look built for fast surfaces - 183 cm, lean frame, not the kind of player who can bully opponents with his serve. But the world No. 6 makes it work through something else entirely: textbook defense and sharp counter-punching from the baseline, where he can hit winners from anywhere on the court.

    Brandon Nakashima Player Overview

Brandon Nakashima doesn't have the same résumé at 500-level events as De Minaur, but this quarterfinal will be his seventh at that category - and his 26th at that level overall. No titles since 2024, but at the Washington home event he beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry (6-3, 6-4) and Jakub Mensik (7-6, 3-6, 6-4) to get here.

Nakashima isn't much taller than his next opponent - 185 cm - but his serve is a different weapon. He pushes it past 200 km/h and disguises it well enough that opponents can't read whether it's flat or kicking. He can also grind from the baseline, but does it more aggressively than the Australian - heavy topspin off the two-handed backhand keeps him on the front foot.

    Key factors

    • At nearly the same height, Nakashima is the more dangerous server.
    • Both play well from the baseline, but the American takes more risks.
    • All their head-to-head matches have gone three sets, with the last two stretching to 20 games or more.

    Expected scenario

This one has all the makings of a tight quarter-final. Nakashima will look to set a fast pace from the opening games - big first serve, aggressive ball-striking from the baseline. Keep that first-serve percentage up and De Minaur won't find break points easy to come by. A long match is the most likely outcome. Even if De Minaur wins, Nakashima has enough in his game to keep the margin small.

    ⭐ Editor's prediction

Nakashima leads De Minaur in their head-to-head - and two of those three meetings came on hard courts. The American's game does look better suited to a fast surface. That said, De Minaur keeps defying expectations, grinding opponents down from the baseline. Both have their edge: De Minaur's defense is about as reliable as it gets; Nakashima brings variety in attack. Given that, the odds on the underdog look too wide. Back him - Nakashima handicap (+3.5).
