Khachanov vs Tien Prediction 7 September 2026

🔊 At 20 years old, Learner Tien became the youngest American to reach the fourth round of the US Open since the legendary Andy Roddick in 2002. Notably, his four previous attempts at the home Major had all ended in the first round. In the round of 16 he faces former US Open semi-finalist Karen Khachanov. The former world No. 8 came into the tournament ranked 50th but produced one of the biggest upsets of the draw by beating Felix Auger-Aliassime. We'll see whether the Russian has fully regained his confidence and, as the underdog, can take another step towards matching his best result in New York.

📊 Karen Khachanov and Learner Tien have no previous meetings on record.

    Karen Khachanov Player Overview

Few would have expected Karen Khachanov to perform so well at the US Open, particularly given that he arrived in New York on a four-match losing streak stretching back to Wimbledon. Yet on his way to the round of 16 he dropped just one set - to world No. 4 Felix Auger-Aliassime (6-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2) - and beat Roman Andres Burruchaga and Benjamin Bonzi without dropping a set, winning each match by a margin of at least nine games.

Khachanov is essentially a baseliner with a slight defensive lean, rarely coming forward and preferring a compact, physical game from the back of the court. His forehand is aggressive - heavy topspin driven deep into the corners - while his two-handed backhand is not merely a defensive shot but a weapon for sharp counter-attacks that keep opponents under constant pressure. His serve is also a notable asset: standing close to two metres tall, he generates speeds above 210 km/h and picks up a lot of free points.

    Learner Tien Player Overview

2025 has been a breakthrough year for Learner Tien, who began it outside the top 120 and ended it inside the top 30. He has carried that form into the current season, reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals at the first attempt. On the summer hard-court swing he went 5-3, and at the US Open he reached the round of 16 without dropping a set, with wins over world No. 41 Nuno Borges and the legendary Gaël Monfils among his results.

His first real difficulty came in the previous round against Jakub Mensik, against whom he fell a set down at 1-2 before recovering to win 6-3, 1-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. Tien's main limitation is a lack of physical power. At 180 cm he struggles to generate high serve speed, and holds his serve in only 71% of service games. On the other hand, his tennis IQ is mature beyond his years: he reads the court exceptionally well, returns early and takes the ball on the rise, and keeps his composure even in five-set matches.

    Key factors

    • Karen Khachanov has covered the handicap (+1.5) in six consecutive matches at the US Open.
    • Karen Khachanov's games-won percentage is higher than Learner Tien's (57% vs 54%).
    • The Russian's serve is considerably more effective than the American's.
    • The home player, however, is notable for his defensive game.

    Expected scenario

At the start of the match, the Russian is expected to take the initiative through aggressive forehands and a series of aces. However, the American's tenacious baseline defence, varied rhythm with frequent drop shots, and tricky topspin from the left hand may gradually unsettle Karen, provoking unforced errors.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

This match shapes up as a classic contest between Karen Khachanov's attacking power and Learner Tien's tenacious defence, where the key factor will be whether the American can handle his opponent's heavy topspin to the backhand and return Khachanov's big serves deep and on the rise. In extended rallies, the physically durable Tien will make Khachanov cover a lot of court, and given Khachanov's limited variety - particularly at the net - that could produce an exhausting multi-set affair.

In that scenario, the psychologically resilient Tien's chances of winning the match look more favourable. That said, the home player still has to stay the course to reach that point, so the Russian underdog will have plenty of time to rack up games. Our pick: Khachanov Total Games - Over 18.5.
