Augsburg vs Schalke Prediction 30 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 The final match of the opening Bundesliga round takes place at the WWK Arena, where Augsburg host Schalke, who are returning to the top flight of German football after three years away. Both clubs began the season with wins in the DFB-Pokal, though the level of opposition they faced was very different. Under Manuel Baum, Augsburg finished in the top half of the table last season and will be looking to take another step forward. Schalke are coming back to the Bundesliga with rather different priorities: after three years in the second division, the Gelsenkirchen club's main objective is to establish themselves and avoid an immediate return to the 2. Bundesliga. That said, the club's ambitions go beyond a simple fight for survival, as their summer recruitment suggests.

    Head-to-Head

📊 In official matches, the overall head-to-head record favours Schalke: across the last 22 meetings, the Gelsenkirchen side have won 10 times, Augsburg have won four, and eight matches have ended in draws.

👀 Recent head-to-head results, however, tell a rather different story. In October 2024, Augsburg thrashed Schalke 3-0 in the DFB-Pokal. The last time the two sides met in the Bundesliga was March 2023, which ended 1-1. In addition, during the 2022/23 season, Augsburg beat Schalke 3-2 away from home.

🔗 The visitors' historical advantage therefore doesn't look like a defining factor right now. In recent official matches, Augsburg have been something of an awkward opponent for Schalke.

    Augsburg Team Overview

Augsburg began the season with a comfortable win in the DFB-Pokal. Manuel Baum's side travelled to Cottbus and won 2-0, with both goals coming after the break. Anton Kade scored on 49 minutes, and Kristijan Jakić wrapped things up in stoppage time. Augsburg came through to the next round without too many problems.

Baum was keen to point out after the match that the team are still some way from their best. He was satisfied with the result but acknowledged there are areas that need improving. That is understandable enough: Augsburg had a busy pre-season before the campaign began, and the win over Energie was their first competitive test.

There were also notable changes during the summer. Augsburg parted ways with Mads Pedersen, who joined Hertha, and on 27 August they added South Korean defender Sol Yeon-woo to the squad. The new signing has already begun training with the group, though his involvement in the opening match is not guaranteed.

In terms of style, the Bavarians should look to play a more direct brand of football, with an emphasis on intensity, physicality and quick transitions from defence to attack. At home they will certainly look to take the initiative, but they are unlikely to open up and take risks from the very first minutes.

The hosts' main advantage is their cohesion and experience at Bundesliga level. Unlike Schalke, who will need to adapt to top-flight football, the Fuggerstädter know exactly what these matches demand and are capable of playing against sides that are not comfortable holding the ball for long periods.

    Schalke Team Overview

Schalke are returning to the Bundesliga after three seasons in the second division and are approaching the start of the campaign with serious ambitions. The primary objective at this stage is clear - staying up - but the squad is good enough to suggest they can perform more convincingly than a typical Bundesliga newcomer.

In the DFB-Pokal, the Miners have already shown their attacking potential. Miron Muslic's side beat Hallescher, from the Regionalliga, 5-2 after extra time. The match stood at 2-2 after 90 minutes, but Schalke scored three more times in the additional 30 minutes. The scorers included Dejan Ljubičić, Moussa Sylla and Junior Adamu, with Edin Džeko netting twice.

Džeko is Schalke's key player ahead of their Bundesliga return. The 40-year-old striker is getting the chance to play in the German top flight again after a long absence. His experience, physical presence and ability in the penalty area should be a significant weapon for Muslic's team.

Against Augsburg, the visitors will probably be more cautious. Playing without the ball suits Gelsenkirchen, looking to use the pace of their attacking players on the break. That said, having Džeko means the team is not limited to counter-attacking: they can play the ball forward and look for their striker with longer passes when needed.

Another factor in their favour is the emotional one. This is Schalke's first Bundesliga match since their return, so motivation will be at its peak. At the same time, a lack of experience at this level among part of the squad could lead to mistakes in key moments.

    Latest news

    Augsburg

❌ The hosts have a number of injury concerns. Alexis Claude-Maurice has an ankle problem, while captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw is missing through illness. Rhys Oxford is also on the list of doubtful players, with his fitness being assessed separately. The situation with Steve Mounie is unclear as well. The striker has fitness concerns, so his involvement from the start is in doubt.

💪 Baum still has plenty of options for his attacking line, and the win in Cottbus showed the team can get the job done even without some of their regular players. So Augsburg's injury concerns cannot be considered critical at this stage.

    Schalke

❌ The visitors' situation is less stable. Adrian Gantenbein has an ankle problem. Tomáš Kalas is also a doubt over his physical condition. Kenan Karaman, who has a hip problem, is absent from some current injury lists. Robin Gosens also needs to be monitored. The new Schalke signing picked up an injury in the match against Hallescher, and his availability for the game against Augsburg is one of the main squad questions ahead of the Bundesliga opener.

💪 At the same time, Muslić still has a fairly strong attacking group at his disposal. Džeko has already shown he is in good shape, and Ljubičić and Silla also got on the scoresheet in the cup match. The squad issues therefore affect the defensive side of the team more than the attack.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

This opening-round match could turn out to be fairly intense. Augsburg will likely press aggressively for the ball, while Schalke may find themselves defending without it for long periods. The hosts' quick attacks could be particularly dangerous for the visitors, forcing their defenders into fouls to stop forward momentum. That said, this doesn't look like a particularly ill-tempered fixture, so a high number of bookings seems unlikely. Prediction: Total Yellow Cards - Under 4.5. Odds: 1.62*.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

I'm not expecting a high-scoring affair here. Augsburg were comfortable in Cottbus, but the 2-0 win came more through controlling the game than through creating a large number of chances.

Schalke, on the other hand, scored five goals in the DFB-Pokal, though three of them came in extra time. That result therefore somewhat overstates the team's actual attacking threat.

On top of that, both sides are likely to be more cautious in the opening round. Augsburg will want to avoid giving a Bundesliga newcomer any confidence, while Schalke are unlikely to open up unnecessarily away from home. My preferred option is Total Goals - Under 3.5 at 1.49*.

    🚩 Corner Prediction

Augsburg at home should enjoy more territorial dominance and get into wide positions more often, which creates good conditions for several corners in favour of the hosts. Schalke, meanwhile, are also capable of responding with quick attacks, particularly if the hosts push high up the pitch. So I'm not expecting a particularly low corner count overall. On average I see around 9-10 corners in the match. Prediction: Total Corners - Under 10.5 at 1.54*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editorial Prediction

Augsburg look better prepared for the start of the Bundesliga season. They have already come through their first official test, have home advantage, and are considerably more familiar with the demands of the division.

Schalke have bigger names - the arrival of Robin Gosens and the presence of Edin Džeko add experience and quality in the final third. However, the visitors have defensive problems, as shown not only in the match against Hallescher but also in pre-season defeats to Atalanta and Real Madrid. Against stronger opponents, the team have not always been able to sustain a high tempo.

That said, I am not expecting an easy home match for the Fuggers. Gelsenkirchen's side are capable of sitting deep and making the game difficult, and Džeko could take advantage of one of the few chances that come his way. The most logical scenario therefore looks like a cautious one with few goals scored. Prediction: Total Goals - Under 3.5. Predicted score: 1-0 to the home side.
