Leipzig vs Monchengladbach Prediction 29 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 RB Leipzig open their home Bundesliga season in a new footballing reality. After finishing third in last season's championship, the club changed manager, with Martin Demichelis replacing Ole Werner. Demichelis must immediately justify the club's ambitions as they return to the Champions League. Their first league test is Borussia Mönchengladbach, who after a difficult last season are hoping for a more stable year under Eugen Polanski.

    Head-to-Head

📊 The recent head-to-head meetings have been extremely tight. Just four goals were scored across the last five encounters: 2-0, 0-0, 0-1, 0-0 and 1-0. In the most recent match at the Red Bull Arena, Leipzig secured a 1-0 victory thanks to a late goal from Yan Diomande. Even more tellingly, Borussia Mönchengladbach have never beaten Leipzig away from home: in nine previous visits, they have suffered six defeats and recorded three draws.

    Leipzig Team Overview

Leipzig finished last season in third place with 65 points and secured a spot in the Champions League. However, the club began a new project over the summer: Ole Werner left the team, with Martín Demichelis taking over as his successor. For the Argentine, this is his first Bundesliga season as a head coach, making the start of the campaign a serious test of his ideas.

The squad has also undergone significant changes. The biggest departure was Yan Diomande, who moved to Real Madrid, while one of the most interesting additions was former Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Rocco Reitz. Christopher Nkunku also returned to Leipzig on loan.

Demichelis' first competitive match in charge was highly convincing. Leipzig thrashed Eintracht Trier 6-0 in the DFB-Pokal, with six different players getting on the scoresheet. Brian Gruda opened the scoring in the third minute, before goals from Willi Orbán, Ridle Baku, Conrad Harder, Antonio Nusa and Eljif Elmas.

The squad depth was particularly impressive. Demichelis was able to make several substitutions without losing control of the game. This could be important against Mönchengladbach, as Leipzig have enough depth to maintain a high tempo not only with their starting XI but also with the players coming off the bench.

    Borussia M'gladbach Team Overview

Borussia finished last season only in 12th place with 38 points. After a poor start, Eugen Polanski managed to stabilize the team and keep them in the Bundesliga. The task is now considerably more ambitious - to return to the top half of the table. The squad has also changed significantly over the summer: the club parted ways with Rocco Reitz, Giovanni Reyna and Nico Elvedi, while bringing in ten new players.

The pre-season provides reasons for optimism. Mönchengladbach won all six of their friendly matches, including a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa. The team also comfortably progressed past Schott Mainz in the DFB-Pokal, winning 5-0. Hugo Bolin scored twice, while Daiki Hashioka found the net on his competitive debut for the club.

However, the cup match was played without Tim Kleindienst. The captain missed the game due to minor muscular problems, while Polanski had already said before the season that he was gradually increasing the striker's workload following a lengthy rehabilitation. Therefore, even if Kleindienst is fit for the match in Leipzig, it would be unwise to expect him to play the full 90 minutes.

The visitors have other attacking options as well. Isak Lidberg can operate as a central striker, while Hugo Bolin, Franck Honorat and Robin Hack provide pace on the flanks. Quick transitions from defence to attack could be Borussia's main weapon against Leipzig's high pressing.

    Latest news

    Leipzig

❌ Leipzig have several notable injury concerns. Romulo has missed the start of the season with a tendon problem and, having been absent from training, remains a doubt for the match against Mönchengladbach. Assan Ouédraogo is continuing his recovery from a shoulder injury, and Christoph Baumgartner is on a rehabilitation programme. Goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland, who has been dealing with a foot problem, is also not expected to play.

    Borussia M'gladbach

❌ The main question mark is over Tim Kleindienst. Having missed the cup match, the captain is expected to return to the starting line-up for the league fixture, though his physical condition means it is too early to say he will be fully ready for 90 minutes. Borussia's squad situation overall looks considerably calmer than Leipzig's: the team came through the cup match without any significant new injury concerns.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

I wouldn't be surprised to see a high number of bookings here. Leipzig will likely look to control the game through pressing and possession, which means Borussia will have to do a lot of work without the ball. That said, their recent head-to-head meetings have been only moderately feisty. Across the five previous matches between the sides, the two teams collected a combined 22 yellow cards - an average of 4.4 per game. Prediction: Total Yellow Cards - Over 3.5.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

This is where the recent head-to-head statistics call for caution. The last five meetings produced just four goals. Demichelis' current Leipzig side looks more direct and intense. The 6-0 thrashing of Trier does not prove much on its own, but six different goalscorers highlight the team's attacking depth. Mönchengladbach also have enough pace in the final third to exploit space after a failed press from the hosts. Therefore, I expect at least two goals, but would not set expectations too high for a goal-fest. Prediction: Borussia Mönchengladbach team total - Under 1.5 goals, a bet that has landed in five consecutive Bundesliga meetings between these teams at the Red Bull Arena. The odds are 1.39*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Leipzig at home should enjoy territorial dominance and spend most of the match in and around the visitors' penalty area. In that situation, the hosts should generate enough attacking play to earn a good number of corners. Borussia, meanwhile, are unlikely to abandon counter-attacks entirely and should also be capable of working their own chances into set-piece situations. In the last meeting between these two sides at the Red Bull Arena, Leipzig delivered 11 corners to the visitors' four. Prediction: Total Corners - Over 8.5 at 1.55*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Prediction

Leipzig look like the favourites, primarily due to home advantage, higher individual quality and a very convincing first official match under Demiсhelis. The 6-0 win over Trier is no indicator of Bundesliga level, but the team showed good intensity and considerable squad depth.

Mönchengladbach go into the opening weekend of the season in good spirits. They won every pre-season match, came through the cup round comfortably and have enough pace in their squad to cause Leipzig's defence problems. The return of Kleindienst also adds physical presence up front for the visitors, even if the captain is not yet ready for a full match.

There is one factor that is hard to ignore, though: Mönchengladbach have never beaten Leipzig on their own ground. I expect another difficult match for the visitors, but not a thrashing. My prediction: RB Leipzig to win. Likely score: 2-0.
