Freiburg vs Werder Bremen Prediction 30 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 On 30 August, Freiburg will open their new Bundesliga season at home against Werder Bremen. Julian Schuster's side come into the start of the campaign in excellent form, having beaten Fortuna Düsseldorf in the DFB-Pokal and qualified for the league phase of the Conference League within the past week. The workload on the hosts is considerable, though: the match against Werder will be their fourth official game in 10 days. Bremen, for their part, also came through their cup tie comfortably and have played just one match in the new season. Freiburg have become a particularly difficult opponent for Werder in recent years, winning the last four Bundesliga meetings between the two sides.

    Head-to-Head

📊 Freiburg have won their last four head-to-head meetings with Werder without conceding a single goal - 1:0, 5:0, 3:0 and 1:0. Werder's last win came in January 2024, when they won 3:1.

    Freiburg Team Overview

Freiburg have started the season in convincing fashion. Julian Schuster's side opened on 20 August with a 3-1 win over Motherwell in Scotland in the first leg of the Conference League qualifying play-offs. They then returned to Germany and travelled to Düsseldorf, where they thrashed Fortuna 5-1 in the Round of 64 of the DFB-Pokal. On Thursday, Freiburg were back at their home Europa-Park Stadion and again came out on top against Motherwell in the second leg, winning 4-1. The German club progressed to the Conference League league phase with an aggregate score of 7-2.

In the space of seven days, Freiburg won three official matches. Their defence, however, has not looked quite as solid - they conceded in each of those three games. That is a notable point ahead of the Bundesliga opener: the team are in excellent form but arrive at the Werder match on the back of a very congested schedule. Sunday's game will be their fourth official fixture in ten days, so physical freshness could be a significant factor.

That said, the current form of their attack gives grounds for optimism about the hosts' prospects. In their three official matches this season, Freiburg have scored at least three goals in every game. The attacking unit has been combining particularly well, with Derry Scherhant and Igor Matanović already making their mark with productive performances.

Freiburg look like clear favourites for this match. The main question is not about the quality of the squad but whether they have enough in the tank after such a busy run of fixtures. If Schuster manages to distribute the workload sensibly and maintain intensity for at least the majority of the game, the hosts should hold a significant advantage over Werder.

    Werder Bremen Team Overview

Werder also started their season with a win in the DFB-Pokal. The Bremen side beat Lüneburger from the Oberliga 3-0, though they only put the game to bed in the second half. Jens Stage opened the scoring, and the team then extended their lead to a comfortable margin with goals in the second half of the match.

One of the main stories of the summer was the return of Niklas Füllkrug. The 33-year-old striker rejoined Werder on loan from West Ham and immediately marked the occasion with a goal in his first competitive match. His physical presence and ability in the penalty area should give Bremen more options in attack.

Head coach Daniel Thioune faces an extremely difficult start: the very first league fixture takes Werder away to Freiburg, who reached the Europa League final last season and have since come through their Conference League qualifying campaign without trouble. Thioune himself acknowledged that this is an extremely tough way to begin the season.

That said, Werder do have reasons to believe they can score. Füllkrug could take advantage of errors from a tired Freiburg defence, and the hosts may lack freshness in certain moments after a demanding European fixture.

    Latest news

    Freiburg

❌ Freiburg's squad situation is fairly settled. The main confirmed absence is Florent Muslija, who is missing the start of the season with a knee injury. One other player is a doubt: Berkay Yılmaz has been ill, so his involvement against Werder is not yet guaranteed.

💪 Notably, Freiburg have not lost any of the key attacking players who shaped their recent results to injury. Grifo, Suzuki, Beste, Scherhant and Matanović all remain available to Schuster, though after three competitive matches in seven days the manager may turn to rotation.

👀 There is also an interesting situation in goal. Mio Backhaus has joined Freiburg from Werder, so Sunday's match will be a reunion with his former club. Noah Atubolu, who kept goal for Freiburg last season, has moved to Eintracht on loan with an option to buy.

    Werder Bremen

❌ Werder's situation is noticeably more complicated. Felix Agu continues to recover from a calf muscle injury, Keke Topp is in rehabilitation after a cruciate ligament rupture, and Oscar Wojczyk is recovering from a muscle problem. All three are officially unavailable for the match. Mitchell Weiser is also not yet ready to play a full part and is likewise not among the available players.

👀 Another important factor is Eren Dinkci. Freiburg sent him to Werder on a season-long loan, but he only returned to training with the main group for the first time on 26 August. He still has a muscle problem, so he remains a doubt at this stage.

💪 The good news for Daniel Thioune is that Karlo Hein has returned to training after the muscle problem that caused him to miss the cup match against Lüneburg. The Estonian goalkeeper is therefore expected to start on Sunday. Up front, the picture is much more positive for Werder, with Justin Njinmah and Samu Mbangula expected to line up alongside Füllkrug.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

I'm not expecting an overly physical game in this opening round of the Bundesliga. Freiburg will look to control the ball, and Werder will spend a lot of time without it. That could lead to frequent fouls from the visitors, particularly when the hosts break quickly. That said, the match doesn't look like a particularly contentious one, so I'm not anticipating a high number of bookings. My pick is Total Yellow Cards - Under 3.5 at 1.8*.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

After three official matches, the temptation to back the over on goals is understandable: Freiburg have scored 12 goals and found the net at least three times in each of those three games. But the fixture schedule is worth bearing in mind. On Sunday, Freiburg will be playing their fourth official match in 10 days, so they may come into the Werder game with less freshness in their legs. Rotation is also a possibility, which means expecting another four or five goals from the hosts would be overly optimistic.

On the other hand, Werder do not look like a side capable of shutting Freiburg's attack down completely. And Bremen only need to score once for the match to lean towards a high-scoring outcome. For that reason, I'm going with Total Goals - Over 2.5 at odds of 1.76*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Despite Freiburg's recent success against Werder in terms of results, they have not won the corners count against Bremen in seven matches in a row - they have failed to earn more than five corners in any of those seven meetings.

That said, Schuster's side will likely enjoy territorial dominance and look to attack in more structured, positional ways. This is particularly likely in the first half, when the hosts will try to take control of the game quickly.

Fatigue from the match against Motherwell could lead Freiburg to be more conservative after the break. Werder, for their part, are capable of creating chances on the counter-attack, but I am not expecting them to sustain prolonged pressure on the hosts' goal. On balance, I am predicting Total Corners - Under 9.5. The odds are 1.85*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Prediction

Freiburg go into the opening matchday in a completely different state to Werder. They have won all three of their official matches this season and scored 12 goals. The key question is physical condition. After the game against Motherwell, they will have had just two full days to recover. So I am not expecting a repeat of a heavy win - a more realistic scenario is the hosts playing pragmatically and taking three points without a rout.

Werder will find it difficult to get anything at Freiburg's ground. The Bremen side won their cup match, but the level of opposition was considerably lower. On top of that, the head-to-head record in recent years is firmly in the hosts' favour. Prediction: Freiburg to win. Expected score: 2-1.
