Man City vs Bournemouth Prediction 23 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 The Premier League season is about to get under way, and one of the standout matches of the opening round is Manchester City vs Bournemouth. A revamped Manchester City side under Enzo Maresca will be looking to make amends for their Community Shield defeat. They face a Bournemouth team that has brought the high-intensity vertical pressing of new German manager Marco Rose to England. Both clubs went through major overhauls in the summer, lost key players, and are now building from scratch.

    Head-to-Head

📊 The head-to-head record spans 20 matches, with Manchester City winning 18, one draw, and one Bournemouth victory. In the last 10 home meetings at the Etihad, City have won every time, averaging 4.5 goals per match.

    Manchester City Team Overview

Manchester City entered a new era this summer. After ten years at the helm, Pep Guardiola left the club, with Enzo Maresca appointed as his successor. Maresca had previously worked as Guardiola's assistant at City before going on to manage Leicester and Chelsea. The club chose him to maintain continuity of philosophy, though Maresca made clear from the outset that he would build the team in his own way.

Maresca retains the core principles of positional play but with his own distinctions. In attack, the team sets up with a rigid back three in the first line. In front of them, a double pivot - two holding midfielders - provides better cover against opposition counter-attacks, a departure from Guardiola's structure where Rodri often held that position alone. Wide forwards such as Antoine Semenyo operate as high and wide as possible on the flanks. Out of possession, City reorganise, with the four attacking players pressing opposition defenders in turn, blocking off the centre and forcing play out wide.

The start of the season has been unconvincing. In the Community Shield, the new-look Manchester City were beaten 3-0 by Arsenal. The players are still adapting to Maresca's ideas, and pundits are predicting a temporary dip in City's consistency. The summer transfer window also brought significant losses: Bernardo Silva, Nathan Aké, Tijjani Reijnders and Rodri all departed. On the incoming side, the only notable addition has been Elliot Anderson.

    Bournemouth Team Overview

Andoni Iraola left the club this summer when his contract expired, taking charge of Liverpool. The board brought in well-known German coach Marco Rose to replace him - previously manager of Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Salzburg. Rose was seen as a natural fit, given that his philosophy builds on and continues the attacking model Iraola had established.

Rose's style is built around intense, aggressive pressing and immediate counter-pressing after losing the ball. Sterile possession is kept to a minimum. The team aims to transition the ball forward as quickly as possible through the flanks after winning it back, flooding the opposition penalty area with numbers. Bournemouth are in a period of tactical transition. Pre-season was mixed - the Cherries failed to win their last two friendlies, drawing with Betis (2-2) and losing to Mainz (1-2).

The squad has seen targeted but costly changes, with the club focusing on promising young talent. New arrivals include António Silva, Alfaro Rodríguez, Alejandro Jiménez and Jaunlú Sánchez. On the departures side, the notable losses are Marcos Senesi, Enes Ünal and Hamed Traoré. Having finished in the top six last season, the squad are motivated to maintain that level and continue causing problems for the bigger clubs.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

Despite major rebuilding at both clubs, the styles of the new managers and the head-to-head record both point towards goals. The key trend: in their last 10 meetings, the two sides have combined for at least 3 goals. City under Maresca have yet to tighten up defensively and were thrashed by Arsenal (0-3) in the Super Cup, while Bournemouth under Marco Rose played highly attacking football in pre-season, averaging 3 goals per game. Home advantage and individual quality in attack give City the edge in the race for three points, but their unsettled defensive line will likely cost them. Our prediction is Total Goals - Over 2.5, at odds of 1.47*.

    🚩 Corner Kick Prediction

Meetings between these two sides at the Etihad tend to produce an unusually high number of corners. In the corresponding home fixture last season, City and the Cherries combined for 14 corners. The reverse match at Bournemouth saw 13. Historically, the average corner count in games between these clubs has consistently exceeded 11. The hosts will account for the bulk of them, but the visitors should contribute a fair share as well. I expect the Total Corners - Over 9.5 to be cleared comfortably, at odds of 1.50*.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The match at the Etihad will be refereed by Australian official Jarred Gillett. Gillett falls into the moderately strict category. Last season he took charge of 22 Premier League matches, showing 79 yellow cards - an average of 3.59 per game. Historically, fixtures between these two sides have not been particularly feisty. We suggest backing Total Yellow Cards - Under 4.5. That bet has come in at least 8 of the last 10 head-to-head meetings.

    🚀 Player Stat Bet

Erling Haaland has scored four goals in his last four matches against Bournemouth. The Cherries have proven to be a comfortable opponent for the Norwegian, who has caused them problems every time they've met. At the World Cup, Haaland carried Norway on his back and knocked Brazil out of the tournament with a brace. We think he can find the net here too. Haaland to Score Anytime - odds 1.60*.

    😱 Risky Bet

For those looking for a high-odds option, it's worth considering a scenario where both sides score in the first half. Bournemouth's pressing game could push them to go for an early goal and then manage the match from there, while City may well convert one of their chances before the break. Both Teams to Score in the 1st Half - Yes - odds 3.9*

    🎯 Reliable Bet

Manchester City and Bournemouth matches are almost never low-scoring affairs. The over 2 total has gone unbeaten across their last 20 meetings in all competitions: 18 times it was a clear win with three or more goals scored, and only twice did it result in a push (matches ending 1-1 or 2-0). Our pick is Total Goals - Over 2 at odds of 1.25*.

👀 If the match doesn't go to plan

If the hosts struggle from the off - as they did in the Super Cup match - and start making errors under pressure, Bournemouth should be able to exploit their shaky defence at least once. We see this as a realistic alternative scenario, and our suggestion here is Bournemouth Team Total - Over 1 at 2.1*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐️Editor's Pick

Manchester City have scored and conceded in six of their last seven head-to-head meetings with Bournemouth, and both teams have scored in each of the last five. City's defensive line is unsettled, and they are still building the physical condition needed to keep clean sheets - that looks a long way off right now. The head-to-head record at the Etihad also suggests Bournemouth tend to be comfortable opponents for City. We're backing Both Teams to Score - Yes in this one. Predicted score: 2-1.
