Key points

📢 How will the second-round Europa League match between Salzburg and Milan play out? The fixture promises to be an interesting contest between two footballing schools: one of the strongest sides in the Austrian championship, known for energetic, attacking football, and a decorated Italian giant with vast experience on the European stage. The difference in class is clear enough - Serie A is noticeably ahead of the Austrian Bundesliga. But the Red Bull Arena factor could narrow that gap somewhat.

🔁 This prediction is updated on match day. Keep an eye on the Latest News section.

The head-to-head history may be brief, but Milan already hold the upper hand.

📊 In the 21st century, the two sides have met just twice: in 2022, when they were drawn into the same Champions League group. The match in Austria ended level (1-1), while in Italy Milan won convincingly (4-0).

Salzburg are gradually reclaiming their lost ground.

Not so long ago, RB Salzburg were considered an almost unstoppable force in Austrian football. Year after year they won the title, leaving their rivals with virtually no chance. But those days of unchallenged dominance are gone: Salzburg have now failed to win the championship for three seasons in a row, and in the previous Bundesliga campaign they finished as low as third. That is why the club are competing in the Europa League rather than the more prestigious Champions League.

The new season, though, has given supporters some cause for optimism. After eight rounds Salzburg have 18 points and sit second in the table, just three points behind the leaders. However, their return from the international break was far from convincing: last weekend they unexpectedly dropped points away to modest Grazer, drawing 0-0.

Their Europa League campaign, on the other hand, got off to a winning start. In the opening matchday Salzburg travelled to Bulgaria, where they beat local side Levski 1-0. It was a fairly even contest, but the difference in finishing proved decisive. The Bulgarians had 14 shots without a single one on target, while Salzburg were far more accurate: 7 shots on target from 12 attempts. The Austrian side's victory can be considered a fair result.

AC Milan’s strong start to the season is gradually fading.

After a disappointing previous season, Milan made a fairly bright start to the new football year, giving their supporters hope of a return to competing at the top. Recently, though, the Rossoneri have dropped off noticeably: in their last five official matches they have won just once, a home victory over Lecce (3-0).

Last weekend brought more frustration. Away at Sassuolo, Milan had to settle for a draw (1-1). It would be hard to call that result unfair: Milan had a degree of control, but they did not dominate the game convincingly enough to clearly deserve all three points.

Their Europa League debut was an outright embarrassment. In the opening matchday, Milan lost at home to Portuguese side Benfica 0-2, failing to score a single goal. That said, the Rossoneri did not look quite as hopeless as the scoreline suggests. They had 61% of the ball against Benfica's 39% and had 17 shots to the visitors' 11. But almost none of that territorial advantage translated into genuine danger, and the hosts never really created a clear-cut chance.

    Latest news

    RB Salzburg

❌ Salzburg have seven injury concerns ahead of the match. Christian Zawieschitzky remains doubtful, while Enrique Aguilar, Damir Redzic and Soumaïla Diabaté are recovering from injuries. Nikolas Veratschnig is expected to return in mid-December, while Justin Omoregie is ruled out for the season. Johannes Moser has resumed training and is nearing a comeback.

    Milan

❌ Milan have two confirmed absentees. Matteo Gabbia is recovering from a tendon injury and is expected back by late October, while Alexis Saelemaekers remains sidelined with an ankle injury until mid-January.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Predicted starting XI for Salzburg: Früchtl - Lainer, Boma, Drexler, Schmid - Barry, Krätzig - Lindstrøm, Kitano, Vertessen - Konaté.

📋 Predicted starting XI for Milan: Maignan - Pavlović, Gabbia, Gila - Estupiñán, Rabiot, Musah, Chukwueze - Moreira, Pulisic - Ramos.

    ⚽️ Goals Prediction

Despite the attacking style of both sides, we are not expecting a goal fest in this match. Salzburg's last five games have featured no more than three goals. Milan are currently far from their best and are struggling in front of goal. Our bet is Total Goals - Under 3.5 at odds of 1.48*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Salzburg's Europa League matches rarely produce many corners: more than ten were recorded in only 1 of their last 7 games. Milan's statistics are even more striking: they have had no more than 11 corners in 18 consecutive matches, and fewer than 10 in each of their last eight away games. We are backing Total Corners - Under 10.5 at odds of 1.45*.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

Milan have not been particularly disciplined this season, picking up an average of two yellow cards per match in Serie A. Against Salzburg's pacey players, the Rossoneri will likely have to resort to tactical fouls even more frequently to contain the hosts' dangerous attacks. Those kinds of challenges often result in bookings. Our bet is Milan Team Total Yellow Cards - Over 1.5.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Prediction

According to the bookmakers, Milan are clear favourites for this match. However, their recent results give little cause for optimism. The Italian giants are going through a difficult spell, dropping points regularly and looking far from their best. On top of that, Salzburg have a reputation for making life hard for big-name opponents at their home Red Bull Arena, where almost no one has an easy time. We therefore expect an even contest and are backing Both Teams to Score - Yes. Predicted score: 1-1.
