Belgium took a lot of criticism for the group stage - in a group without any heavyweights, GarcΓa's side almost didn't make it through and only sealed their place with a 5-1 win over New Zealand in the final round. Then came the comeback from 0-2 against Senegal, settled by a deeply controversial penalty on 125 minutes (3-2). In the Round of 16, though, Belgium looked like a completely different team - a commanding 4-1 over the USA.
The match against the hosts was overshadowed by the Balogun controversy: the American striker initially faced suspension after a red card against Bosnia, then FIFA suddenly suspended the sanction, sparking widespread debate. Belgium got on with it. GarcΓa set up a 4-2-3-1 with Onana and Raskin in the pivot, Tielemans behind the striker, Lukebakio and Trossard on the flanks, De Ketelaere up front. De Bruyne, Doku and Lukaku started on the bench - a surprise call that worked. The attack had more movement and flexibility. The Belgian winger has started only three of his five World Cup matches, missed one game following the birth of his child, and has yet to register a goal or an assist despite Belgium scoring 13 goals while he has been on the pitch. Even so, the coaching staff believe Doku's pace and dribbling ability could be crucial in breaking down Spain's defense. His direct style of play is also reflected in the betting markets, where bookmakers rate him as the most likely player to draw fouls. The odds for Doku to win at least two fouls currently stand at 1.55.

- Zeno Debast will miss Belgium's clash with Spain. According to the Royal Belgian Football Association, Sporting CP's medical staff believe the defender is not yet fit to play. The Belgian federation, however, stated that Sporting's assessment differs from the opinions of both the national team's medical staff and FIFA's medical experts. As a result of the disagreement between club and country, it has been decided that Debast will not feature in the match. He is currently training individually. Fortunately for Belgium, his absence is not expected to have a major impact. Debast has yet to make an appearance at this World Cup, although he was included in the matchday squad for the previous game.
