The reigning champions, who have not conceded a single goal in their three opening matches of the campaign, face the highest-scoring team in the Premier League. Chelsea under Xabi Alonso are looking to end a long run without a win against Arsenal. Can they do it?

    Arsenal Team Overview

Mikel Arteta goes into the derby with a near-perfect start to the season: three matches, three wins, no goals conceded. After a convincing victory over Manchester City (3-0) in the Community Shield, the Gunners followed up by beating Coventry (3-0) and Aston Villa (1-0). Their defence has looked impenetrable - across the two Premier League rounds, opponents have not even managed a combined xG of one goal.

On an individual level, Riccardo Calafiori deserves a mention. The Italian has been in excellent form since the summer break. He has started and contributed a goal involvement in all three matches so far, cementing his place at left back. That kind of consistency is particularly valuable given the injury problems in the defensive line.

    Chelsea Team Overview

Xabi Alonso began his new era at Chelsea with two high-scoring wins: 3-2 against Fulham and 4-3 against Brighton. The cup victory over Luton (2-0) can be set aside. The attacking output has been genuinely impressive - seven goals in two league matches, the best return in the division. The standout performers at the start of the season have been João Pedro (2 goals, 2 assists) and Cole Palmer (2 goals, 1 assist).

Behind that, though, there are serious problems. Against Brighton, Chelsea had just 26% possession - the lowest figure of Alonso's managerial career. They conceded five big chances and what had been a comfortable 3-0 lead after half an hour became a nervy one-goal win. Emiliano Martínez had a difficult debut, making four saves and dealing with two dangerous moments from the Seagulls.

    Latest news

    Arsenal

❌ The main injury concern is William Saliba, who is still recovering from a back injury and will not play. Christian Mosquera's involvement is also very much in doubt after he was substituted in the match against Aston Villa. Summer signing Ezri Konsa is most likely to start alongside Gabriel from the first minute.

✔ Jurrien Timber had also been out, but the right-back has returned to training. Mikel Arteta said a decision on him will be made on the day of the match. Bruno Guimarães has recovered from a groin injury, and Declan Rice is also fit to play - the midfield is fully available.

    Chelsea

❌ The visitors' squad situation is far from ideal. The main concern is Moisés Caicedo, who came on as a substitute against Brighton but lasted only 14 minutes before going off with an injury. There is no information yet on the Ecuadorian's condition. Jordan Henderson will also miss out - he is recovering from a wrist fracture sustained at the World Cup.

📌 Options in central midfield are extremely limited, with Enzo Fernández having left for Man City and the deal for Lamine Camara falling through on deadline day. In that situation, Reece James, as captain, will most likely partner Romeo Lavia in the holding midfield role.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Predicted Arsenal starting XI: Raya - White, Konsa, Gabriel, Calafiori - Rice, Lewis-Skelly - Ødegaard, Tzolis, Saka - Havertz

📋 Predicted Chelsea starting XI: Martínez - Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill - Hato, Lavia, James, Gusto - Palmer, Rodgers, Pedro

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The match referee is Chris Kavanagh - one of the most experienced officials in the Premier League. In the 2025/26 season he has taken charge of 30 league matches, showing 123 yellow cards at an average of 4.1 per game. In the current season he has officiated three matches across all competitions, brandishing 13 bookings. The nature of a London derby tends to produce plenty of physical battles and emotions, and the statistics back that up. In 6 of the last 7 head-to-head meetings between these two sides, the total has gone over 3.5 yellow cards. Given the referee's numbers, the Total Yellow Cards - Over 3.5 at 1.40* looks the optimal bet.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

This is a meeting between the league's best defence and the league's best attack. Something has to give. In that case it makes sense to look at the weaknesses of each side, and the most vulnerable area appears to be Chelsea's defence. There is a striking trend worth noting: Chelsea have conceded before half-time in 7 of their last 8 Premier League matches, while Arsenal, by contrast, have scored in the first 45 minutes in each of their last five matches across all competitions. On that basis, we are backing a Home Team to Score in the 1st Half at 1.70*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Arsenal will look to dominate and apply pressure at home. Even Brighton managed to push Chelsea off the ball, so there is little doubt that Arteta's side will do the same. However, that is no guarantee of a high corner count - in the last two head-to-head meetings, the Gunners actually lost the corners battle. With that in mind, we turn to the trends and back Total Corners - Under 11.5, which has landed in 10 of Arsenal's last 11 official matches. We are not expecting a high volume of set-piece deliveries.

    🚀 Player Statistics Bet

There is one player who will take to the pitch with extra motivation. Bukayo Saka scored in the opening two league rounds and has accumulated 82 points for Arsenal through his goal involvements in the Premier League - the fourth-highest total in the club's history. Only legends stand ahead of him: van Persie, Bergkamp and Henry. There is also a personal subplot: the academy graduate turned 25 on 5 September, and the following day he steps onto the pitch with every reason to give himself and the fans something to celebrate. We think he will manage it. The bet is Saka to Score at 3.05*.

    😱 Risky Bet

Arsenal have not conceded in the current season and have kept clean sheets in their last four home Premier League matches. That is impressive in itself, but it is also worth noting that Chelsea have failed to score against the Gunners in 3 of their last 4 away meetings. Xabi Alonso's project is still a work in progress, so a low-scoring home win is not difficult to imagine. The odds on Arsenal to Win and Total Goals - Under 2.5 are around 5.00*.

    🎯 Reliable Bet

Mikel Arteta's side have been dominant over Chelsea and at this stage look considerably more settled than their opponents. Arsenal have not lost to Chelsea since 2022 and are also unbeaten in their last 11 matches across all competitions. It is hard to see the west London side ending that run. In our view, the most reliable option is Arsenal Not to Lose at 1.20*.

👀 If the Match Goes Off-Script

An early Arsenal goal is the factor that could derail our derby scenario. If the Gunners score within the first 15 minutes - as happened in 2 of their 3 matches at the start of the season - Chelsea will be forced to open up, which could lead to a more open game and a heavy defeat for the visitors given their inconsistent defence. The in-play option in that scenario would be Total Goals - Over 3.5 (pre-match odds: 2.70*).

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐️ Editorial Prediction

What makes this match particularly intriguing is the clash between the league's best defence and the league's best attack. But those are just headline numbers. In our view, Arsenal go into this derby in incomparably better shape. This is a team that is ready in every sense - one that knows how to mask personnel problems and is extremely reliable at the back. The same cannot be said of Chelsea. Xabi Alonso is taking his first steps in charge of the Blues, and the Spaniard needs time. For that reason, we lean towards the Gunners' pattern of dominance in head-to-head meetings continuing. We're predicting an exact score of 2-0, and our main bet is an Arsenal win.
