The roots of professional baseball in Japan can be traced back to the late 19th century when the sport was introduced to the country by American teachers and merchants. The first recorded baseball game took place in 1873 between two teams of foreigners in Tokyo. Over time, the sport gained popularity among Japanese students, and the foundation for organized baseball was established.
In 1920, several baseball teams formed the Japanese Baseball League (JBL), marking the official start of professional baseball in Japan. The league initially consisted of five teams: the Tokyo Giants (now known as the Yomiuri Giants), Osaka Tigers (currently known as the Hanshin Tigers), Nagoya Angels (later renamed the Chunichi Dragons), the Kobe Keio Club (now the Orix Buffaloes), and the Great Tokyo Club (which disbanded after one season).
The Japan Professional Baseball League, also known as Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), has a rich history that began in 1934. In 1934, the JBL merged with the Tokyo Baseball League to form the Japan Professional Baseball League (JPBL) consisting of 6 teams, which later became Nippon Professional Baseball in 1950.
The league currently consists of 12 teams, divided into two leagues: the Central League and the Pacific League. Some of the most popular and iconic teams in the NPB include the Yomiuri Giants, Hanshin Tigers, Chunichi Dragons, Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Hiroshima Toyo Carp, and Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. These teams have garnered a strong fan base and have a history of success in the league, with passionate supporters filling stadiums across Japan.
The regular season typically comprises 143 games for each team. The season kicks off in late March or early April and runs until September, featuring a mix of home and away games. Each team competes against their league rivals multiple times throughout the season, with interleague play also incorporated into the schedule. For example, the NPB uses a slightly smaller and harder baseball than MLB, which affects the movement and speed of pitches. Another difference is that the NPB allows teams to have up to four foreign players on their active roster, while MLB does not have such a limit. Some common tactics that NPB teams use are bunting, stealing bases, sacrificing runners and squeeze plays, which are designed to manufacture runs in low-scoring games. NPB teams also tend to use more pitchers per game than MLB teams, as they have a larger bullpen and a shorter season.
