🔊 Luca Van Assche and Alexander Blockx are meeting in the Estoril final, both chasing their first ATP title. There's extra edge to this one - both won junior Grand Slam titles in different years, and they've already met in a final before, at a hard-court Challenger in Lille, where Van Assche came out on top. Now Blockx, currently the higher-ranked of the two, gets a shot at revenge.

    Head-to-Head

📊 The Lille final remains their only head-to-head meeting. Back in February, Luca Van Asch took it 6-2, 6-4.

    Luca Van Assche Player Overview

Van Assche is only 22, so reaching his first ATP-level final is no surprise. He's a versatile player - clay is his preferred surface, but his indoor and hard-court match count isn't far behind. Three titles on each: clay and indoor hard. Balanced career so far.

The Estoril final is the best result of his career, at any level. On the way there he beat Pablo Carreño Busta and Hugo Gaston, but the real result was the quarterfinal win over top seed Andrey Rublev - 3:6, 6:3, 6:4. Van Assche doesn't have a big serve; at 178 cm he's on the shorter side for the men's tour. He makes up for it from the baseline - not just defending, but actively counter-attacking. He can hit winners from almost anywhere back there.

    Alexander Blockx Player Overview

Alexander Blockx is even younger than his upcoming opponent - 21 years old - but ranks 40 places above him. Still, this will be his first ATP final too. His best result on the main tour before this week was a semi-final at the Madrid clay Masters, and up to that point he had only won titles on fast surfaces: three indoors, one on hard court.

The run to the Estoril final wasn't easy. Every match went the distance. He beat Kirian Jacquet, Roman Andres Burruchaga, and Luciano Darderi along the way. In the semi-final against the tournament's second Italian seed, Blockx won two tie-breaks in the final two sets - and in the last one, he was down 2-4 before turning it around. He's 10 centimetres taller than his opponent, which helps him earn more free points on serve. But his return is just as dangerous - he takes the ball early and applies pressure from the first shot.

    Key factors

    • Both players are all-court, though the Frenchman has more matches on clay.
    • The Belgian is taller and more effective on serve.
    • The Frenchman is stronger from the baseline and comfortable in long rallies.
    • Blox looks to finish points in a few shots.

    Expected scenario

The final should be competitive. Van Asch will try to drag his opponent into long rallies, leaning on his solid baseline game. The Belgian, by contrast, will go aggressive - big serve, short points, looking to finish things early. Even if it ends in two sets, expect a tight scoreline with plenty of games.

    ⭐ Editorial prediction

Luca Van Assche can be called a clay specialist - loosely. Alexander Blockx can't claim that at all. The Frenchman's game suits red courts far better, and he has considerably more matches on the surface. That said, Blockx's lack of clay experience only really shows in how long his matches run in Estoril.

We're not dismissing the lower odds on him, but Van Assche looks capable of staying close on the scoreboard against a higher-ranked opponent and making this genuinely competitive. None of Blockx's matches in Portugal have finished in under 32 games. The current odds allow you to lower expectations on both players and back over 21.5 games.
