Netherlands vs Morocco Prediction 30 June 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 The bracket has thrown up one of the standout last-32 ties already. Netherlands and Morocco meet at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey - two of the tournament's most compelling sides, forced to face each other far earlier than anyone wanted. One of them goes home here. Who holds their nerve?

    Head-to-Head

📊 These sides have met just three times. The most recent was a 2017 friendly - Netherlands won 2-1. There's an interesting historical footnote too: exactly 32 years ago to the day, they met at the 1994 World Cup in the US. Same scoreline, same winner. But Morocco have come a long way since then.

    Netherlands Team Overview

🟠 Netherlands have a strong recent World Cup record - a final in 2010, bronze since then, and consistently deep runs. The group stage here was solid enough: seven points, first place. Though the quality of opposition deserves a mention - Tunisia, Sweden and Japan are decent sides, but none of them should have put the Dutch in serious trouble.

🔵 In the final group game against Tunisia, Koeman's side needed not just a win but a convincing one. Netherlands and Japan were level on points going into round three, with goal difference potentially deciding first place. Koeman went 4-3-3 - Brobby up front, Gakpo and Malen wide - and the game went Dutch almost immediately. A Dumfries cutback on three minutes deflected in off Tunisia's captain Khiri for an own goal. Brobby added a second on seven. Even the goal conceded early in the second half didn't change much - Tunisia threatened briefly, but Netherlands regained control quickly and scored a third.

    Morocco Team Overview

⚪ Morocco surprised a lot of people at the 2022 World Cup, reaching the semi-finals and knocking out Spain and Portugal along the way. Coming into this tournament, they were again seen as a side capable of going deep. The group stage backed that up - unbeaten, seven points, only behind Brazil on goal difference. They had a chance to top the group too: a big win over Haiti in the final round was the requirement. Haiti looked like the right opponents for that - what they got instead was a nervy 4-2.

🔴 Morocco lined up in a 4-2-3-1 with Hakimi bombing forward on the right, Saibari in the number ten role and El Kaabi up front. The first half was chaotic for a side with serious ambitions. Haiti went ahead twice; Morocco had to come back both times. At one point Placide made two saves in quick succession to keep it level, and at half-time it was 2-2. After the break Morocco were sharper - better spatial control, more sustained spells in the final third - and their bench made the difference. Rahimi, coming on as a substitute, broke Haiti's resistance on 78 minutes and Yassin wrapped it up on 89. But defending like that against Netherlands is a different matter entirely.

    Latest news

    Netherlands

🎤 Ronald Koeman after the Tunisia win: "I'm not sure we'll even be favourites against Morocco. We need to prepare seriously - they have a lot of quality and find goals easily... We're not in a position to look too far ahead. There's a real test coming first and that's what we're focused on."

✅ No injury concerns - all players are available.

🔁 Update as of June 29, 15:55 UTC:

    • Ahead of the match, Virgil van Dijk singled out Morocco's threat down the flanks, highlighting the influence of Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Díaz, and Ayyoub Bouaddi. The Dutch have been working extensively on dealing with Morocco's quick transitions and wide attacking play. As a result, the Netherlands are expected to focus on denying space to Morocco's attackers, even if that means committing tactical fouls. Their foul count has already increased from game to game at this World Cup, rising from 7 against Japan to 10 against Tunisia. Bookmakers expect that trend to continue, with the main market line currently set at Over 11.5 fouls by the Netherlands.

    Morocco

🎤 Mohamed Ouahbi after the Haiti win: "We wanted to win the group, but we didn't play well enough to deserve it. In the second half we had to go all-in - there were a lot of chances... We have strong players, an excellent coaching staff and huge support from our fans. So the goal can only be one thing - winning this World Cup."

✅ Same situation - nobody in the treatment room. Full squad available, Ouahbi can pick his strongest XI.

🔁 Update as of June 29, 5:00 UTC:

    • Nabil Wahbi has indicated that Morocco will take a different tactical approach against the Netherlands than they did in the group stage. According to the coach, his team has already shown it can adapt to different styles - from a disciplined defensive setup against Brazil to a much more open game versus Haiti. Facing the Dutch, however, will require what he described as "a different solution." It's difficult to know exactly what adjustments Morocco have in mind, but one thing is clear: group-stage statistics alone should not be taken at face value. Evaluating this matchup also requires a close look at how the Netherlands have been playing.

    Predicted Lineups

📃 Netherlands: Verbruggen - van de Ven, van Hecke, van Dijk, Dumfries - Gravenberch, de Jong, Reijnders - Gakpo, Brobbey, Malen

📃 Morocco: Bono - Mazraoui, Riad, Diop, Hakimi - El Aynaoui, Bouaddi - El Khannous, Ounahi, Brahim Díaz - Saibari

    🟨 Yellow Cards

Netherlands had a nervy opener against Japan with three yellow cards, but things calmed down considerably after that - no bookings at all against Sweden or Tunisia. For context: they picked up eight yellows against Argentina in the 2022 quarter-final, but that match had its own specific edge. This is different - Koeman's side come in as favourites and should be able to play their game. Netherlands total yellow cards under 1.5 at 1.53*.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

Morocco scored in every group game, but the more interesting detail is how - and through whom. According to Opta, Achraf Hakimi created 22 chances across three games, the most by any Moroccan player in World Cup history. And Ismaël Saibari became the first African player to score in all three group games at a single World Cup. Morocco won't park the bus here - the mentality of this side has changed since 2022. Morocco to score at 1.55*.

    🚩 Corner Prediction

Morocco build through quick combinations and Hakimi's individual quality; Netherlands also prefer to attack centrally with short passing. Neither side relies heavily on wide delivery. At this tournament, total corners under 9.5 has landed in two of three matches for both sides. That bet at 1.62*.

    🚀 Player Stat Bet

Ismaël Saibari is Morocco's standout performer at this tournament - a goal in every group game, constant movement between the lines, always ready to shoot. Against Haiti he had five shots. Saibari total shots over 3 looks justified.

    😱 Risky Bet

Netherlands are one of the most watchable sides at this World Cup. Every one of their three group games produced at least four goals. In total they've scored ten - only Germany and Brazil in 2002 have done better after the group stage since 1990, with 11 each. Total goals over 3.5 at 4.13* for the risk-takers.

    🎯 Safe Bet

Morocco almost never lose - 23 of their last 24 official matches have ended without defeat. A loss by two or more goals is genuinely hard to recall. Even against Brazil and the top sides at the 2022 World Cup, they never fell apart. Morocco +1.5 handicap at 1.24* is the safest call here.

👀 If the Match Doesn't Go as Planned

Most signs point to a scoring game - but the knockout stage is different. One mistake can end your tournament, and neither side came here to go out in the last 16. If both teams start cautiously and treat every moment as precious, a more closed affair is entirely possible. Total goals under 2.5 at 1.70* in that scenario.

*Odds are approximate and may vary across different bookmakers.

    Editor's Prediction

The bookmakers favour Netherlands, and the logic holds - Koeman's squad has more star power. But this won't be easy. Morocco have produced quality football throughout the tournament, created chances in every game and scored consistently. Seventh in the FIFA rankings isn't an accident - it reflects how much this side has grown. Morocco to score is the most sensible anchor pick here. We think the 90 minutes ends 2-2.
