Strasbourg vs Lens Prediction 29 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 In May, Lens won the Coupe de France for the first time in their history, and in August they added the Trophée des Champions - also a first for the club. They began the league season in the same vein: Thomasson scored twice as Auxerre left empty-handed. Strasbourg's start went the other way - they were reduced to ten men at Marseille and failed to score. In head-to-head meetings, that gap rarely shows: Lens have won by more than one goal in only one of their last 14 Ligue 1 meetings with Strasbourg. The two sides meet in Matchday 2 on 29 August at the Stade de la Meinau.

    Head-to-Head

📊 At home, Strasbourg have scored in 8 of their last 9 head-to-head matches, and have conceded with the same regularity. That was exactly what happened at the Meinau in February: Panicelli opened the scoring on 18 minutes, Sangaré equalised early in the second half, and the sides shared the points. High-scoring affairs are rare in this fixture, though - Lens themselves have failed to score more than two goals in nine consecutive away matches.

    Strasbourg Alsace Team Overview

Strasbourg finished last season in eighth place with 53 points, and in the spring they reached the semi-finals of the Conference League, where they were beaten by Rayo. There is little stability at the club, though: Hugo Oliveira is the third manager since January. First Liam Rosenior left for Chelsea, then Gary O'Neil for Ipswich, and over the summer the 47-year-old Portuguese arrived at the Meinau. With Famalicão he achieved a record fifth-place finish in the Primeira Liga, but this is his first experience of Ligue 1.

Oliveira's debut did not go well: Strasbourg lost 4-0 in Marseille and had the ball for just a third of the match. The problems, though, predate that evening - Strasbourg have now conceded in ten consecutive matches, and in eight of their last nine home Ligue 1 games. Clean sheets at the Meinau have been non-existent: in nine consecutive league matches at home, both teams combined have scored at least twice.

    Lens Team Overview

Lens finished last season in second place with 70 points, and they have lost all three of their previous French Cup finals - in 1948, 1975 and 1998. The architect of that season didn't make it to the next one: Pierre Sage left for Crystal Palace, and Dino Toppmöller took charge of the team in the summer. The German had spent two and a half years at Eintracht before that, from the summer of 2023 to January 2026. He won his first trophy with ten men: Thomavin's goal against PSG held until the final whistle.

In the first round, Lens beat Auxerre 5-2. Lens have scored in 23 of their last 25 Ligue 1 matches, and their away record is even more consistent - 11 of their last 12. They have not failed to score at least two goals in any of their last 17 away matches.

    Latest news

    Strasbourg Alsace

Oliveira will have to reshuffle his midfield: Samir El-Murabet picked up a straight red card in Marseille and will miss this match. The attacking options are even more of a concern - Joaquin Panichelli, who scored 16 goals in last season's Ligue 1, ruptured his cruciate ligament in March and has not yet returned. In the summer the club let Diego Moreira leave for Milan, and the goalkeeping spot has gone to a new arrival - Filip Jørgensen has joined from Chelsea. On the positive side, Strasbourg have no European football this season, so they had a free week before this fixture.

    Lens

❗️ The team finished the Supercoupe with ten men because of Killian Antonio - the defender served his suspension in the first round and will start at the Meinau. The injury list remains lengthy: Jonathan Gradit, Samson Baidoo, Joanner Chavez, Nidal Chelik and Régis Gurtner are all out. A fresh concern has also emerged - Ganiu scored Auxerre's fourth goal and then went off with an injury 13 minutes later. On a more positive note, Odsonne Édouard has already come on as a substitute following his injury.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Predicted Strasbourg XI: Jørgensen - Doué, Omobamidele, Høgsberg, Antwi - Sousa, Diop - Amo-Ameyo, Yassine, Nanasi - Mara.

📋 Predicted Lens XI: Risser - Nawrocki, Ganiu, Sagnian - Abdulhamid, Cuisance, Titraoui, Yudol - Touwen, Ivanovic - Sima.

    ⚽️ Goals Prediction

Strasbourg tend to concede in the second half at home - they have let in a goal after the break in 7 of their last 8 Ligue 1 home matches. On the other side, Lens have been equally consistent away from home, scoring in the second half in 13 of their last 15 away matches. We don't expect the hosts to hold out until the final whistle this time. The bet is Lens to Score in the 2nd Half at 1.51*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Corners favour the visitors. Lens have averaged 7.2 corners per game across their last ten official matches, while Strasbourg's opponents have averaged 5.5 over the same period. The recent away trend points the same way - Lens have won more than 4.5 corners in 8 of their last 9 away matches. The bet is Lens Team Total Corners - Over 4.5 at 1.62*.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The match will be refereed by Bastien Dechepy, and he is a strict official: across his Ligue 1 career he averages 3.78 yellow cards per game, compared to a tournament average of 3.53. Both sides should give him plenty to work with. In their last ten official matches, Strasbourg players have averaged 1.8 cards per game, while Lens's opponents have averaged 1.6. The visitors also average 1.8, with their hosts' opponents averaging 1.9. The line sits below these figures, but Dechepy will only push the count higher. The bet is Total Yellow Cards - Over 3.5.

*Odds are approximate and may vary across different bookmakers.

    📌 Editorial Prediction

Lens have gone unbeaten in 9 of their last 10 matches. Strasbourg have little to offer in response: in 7 of their last 8 Ligue 1 head-to-head meetings, the hosts have failed to win. We don't expect that run to end right now - in their first home match under a new manager, without their suspended defensive midfielder and without last season's top scorer.

There is one risk in this bet: nobody has yet seen how Strasbourg play at La Meinau under Oliveira. That's why we're not going with a straight result, but taking the safer option instead. The bet is Lens to win with Handicap (0). Predicted score: 1-2.
