Crystal Palace vs Man City Prediction 28 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Matchday 2 of the English Premier League, and Crystal Palace host Manchester City. The opening round highlighted problems for both sides in defence and attack. City managed to grab three points in the final ten minutes against Bournemouth, while the Eagles had a much harder time - their trip to Liverpool could hardly have gone worse. Palace generated 1.96 xG but still couldn't find a goal against Everton. Can Crystal Palace give the most dominant club in England over the last ten years a real contest?

    Head-to-Head

📊 These two sides have met 40 times. Manchester City have won 25 of those matches, Crystal Palace seven, with eight draws. At home, Palace average 0.86 goals per game, while City average 1.62 on the road.

    Crystal Palace Team Overview

The club had a busy pre-season, which included heavy defeats to Freiburg and Lens (both 0-3), along with wins over Fulham (2-1) and Al Ula (3-1). The competitive season got off to a difficult start as well. A first-round defeat to Everton has left the club urgently needing to improve their finishing. In that match, Palace were largely on level terms with their opponents, enjoying more possession and creating some clear-cut chances.

Following their European triumph in the spring, the club has entered a period of significant change. Oliver Glasner, the architect of that success, has moved on to Nottingham Forest, and Pierre Sage - one of French football's more distinctive tactical minds - has taken over on a three-year contract. The previous year, he had an impressive run with Lens, guiding them to a league runners-up finish, winning the Coupe de France and securing Champions League qualification. His approach is characterised by tactical flexibility, a possession-based style, structured positional play and the use of pressing traps in central areas.

This summer, Brennan Johnson and Maxence Lacroix have left the club. Takehiro Tomiyasu and Oscar Mingueza have joined as free agents, while Dwight McNeil arrived as part of the deal that took Johnson away. Xavier Gwozdz and Anan Khalaili have also been signed.

    Manchester City Team Overview

This summer marked the start of a new chapter for Manchester City: Pep Guardiola left the club after ten years of extraordinary success, with Enzo Maresca appointed as his successor. The Italian is no stranger to the setup - he worked under Guardiola at City before going on to build his own reputation with Leicester and Chelsea. The appointment signalled continuity in the club's core footballing values, though Maresca made clear from the outset that he intended to make meaningful tactical changes.

Maresca has kept the positional model but put his own stamp on it. In build-up, the team now forms a strict back three, with a double pivot in front to better absorb opposition counter-attacks. The wide forwards, including Antoine Semenyo, push extremely high to stretch the opposition defence across the full width of the pitch. Defensively, City reorganise into a shape where the four attacking players take turns pressing, blocking off the central zone and deliberately funnelling opponents out to the flanks.

The start of the season has been unconvincing. In the Community Shield, the new-look City were beaten 3-0 by Arsenal, and a poor performance against Bournemouth followed, with the team fortunate to equalise in the final ten minutes. The squad is still adapting to Maresca's demands, and analysts expect a period of inconsistency and a drop from the standards of previous seasons. The summer transfer window has also taken a significant toll on the squad: several key players have left, including Bernardo Silva, Nathan Aké, Tijjani Reijnders and Rodri, with the departures barely offset by incoming business - the only notable signing being Elliot Anderson.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

Both teams are in a rebuilding phase under new managers. Errors in defensive lines that are not yet fully settled, combined with the visitors' high attacking potential, point to an entertaining match. The shift to a new tactical setup has left City's defence vulnerable to counter-attacks, though their creative attacking unit is capable of scoring. Crystal Palace failed to convert a large number of chances in away matches, but Pierre Sage's side are at home now and have every chance of scoring their first goal of the season. Our prediction is Both Teams to Score - Yes at 1.71*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Under pressure from the favourites, the Londoners are happy to keep things simple. Defenders prefer to put the ball out for a corner rather than risk playing out under the press with a short pass. Palace's defenders will constantly be in the business of blocking crosses and shots. In the teams' most recent match, there were 13 corners between them - 9 to 4 in Manchester City's favour - which comfortably clears the base total. City's style of play under Maresca and Sage's defensive setup create ideal conditions for a high corner count, predominantly at the Londoners' end. Total Corners - Over 9.5 at 1.75* looks worth considering here.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

In the most recent Premier League meeting between the sides in May this year, City's players received no yellow cards and Palace's players received just two bookings. The team rarely fouls in straightforward situations, preferring to win the ball through positional defending. At home, the Eagles are traditionally forced into a lot of defending against the favourites, so their individual card total tends to be higher. Even so, the team's average rarely exceeds 2.5 bookings per game. The match is unlikely to turn into a rough, physical contest at the start of the season, as both teams are still finding their rhythm. Our prediction is Total Yellow Cards - Under 3.5 at 1.67*.

    🚀 Player Stat Bet

Erling Haaland has started both of City's opening matches this season, playing a combined 145 minutes without finding the net. At the World Cup, Haaland led Norway to the quarter-finals, knocking Brazil out of the tournament. The Norwegian is coming into form after the summer and, as the team's main striker, should be due a goal. We think he can get on the scoresheet in this match. Erling Haaland to Score - Yes at 1.80*.

    😱 Risky Bet

Manchester City clearly have cohesion problems at the start of the season. Defensively the team are also struggling, conceding consistently in their opening official matches. We think Crystal Palace will find their moment and take it, though the Londoners have serious difficulties against stronger opposition - the pre-season and the trip to Liverpool at the start of the season showed us that. City managed to come back in the match against Bournemouth, and we think a repeat of that scenario is possible. Our risky bet is Both Teams to Score - Yes and Total Goals - Under 3.5 at 3.85*.

    🎯 Reliable Bet

In their first two matches of the season, Manchester City managed to concede three goals - all of them in the first halves of those matches (two against Arsenal and one against Bournemouth). During pre-season, City played three matches in which seven goals were scored, all of them in the opening 45 minutes. Crystal Palace also conceded against Everton in the first half. We think the opening goal in this match will not take long to arrive. Our reliable bet is Goal in the 1st Half at 1.30*.

👀 If the Match Goes Off-Script

If the first half passes without a goal, Crystal Palace will sit deep and look to hold the draw, breaking forward only occasionally on quick counter-attacks. That is how it was in the match against Everton before they conceded. And if Manchester City also struggle with their finishing, as they did in their opening matches this season, then we suggest taking Total Goals - Under 2.5 at 2.22*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐️ Editor's Pick

New Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage is still building his system. Containing Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki will be extremely difficult for such an undrilled defence. Former Palace player Marc Guéhi now leads the Citizens' backline. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of his former attacking teammates inside out and will be able to neutralise them effectively. In the Premier League, the Londoners have beaten City just twice in their last 24 meetings. Both head-to-head fixtures last season also ended in convincing Manchester City victories. Our main prediction is a Manchester City win. Predicted correct score: 1-2.
