Aston Villa vs Fulham Prediction 28 September 2025

Details
The main thing

🔊 Aston Villa finally secured their first win of the season this week, albeit in the Europa League. Their Premier League campaign, however, hasn't been as promising. On Saturday, the Lions return to Villa Park after two consecutive away games. Meanwhile, their upcoming opponents, Fulham, will have to step out of their comfort zone at Craven Cottage for their first away trip in almost a month. Visits to Birmingham have long been fruitless for the Cottagers-they last took points from there in the Premier League over a decade ago. Which team's unfortunate streak will end on September 27th? Let's assess both sides' chances in our editorial prediction.

    Head-to-Head

📊 Fulham have been oscillating between the Premier League and the Championship at the turn of the decade. However, since 2020, there have been eight encounters between the sides. Unfortunately for the Cottagers, they've only come out on top once, back in the 2022/23 season, right after their return to the top flight. Aston Villa have emerged victorious in the other six meetings.

    Aston Villa Team Overview

Aston Villa have emerged as one of the biggest disappointments at the start of the Premier League season. Just last spring, they were competing in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, narrowly losing on aggregate to the eventual tournament winners, Paris Saint-Germain (1-3; 3-2). As this season kicked off, the "Lions" went over a month without a win. Their first success came this week in the Europa League, where they defeated Bologna (1-0). However, domestically, Unai Emery's side have only managed to scrape points through draws-three to be exact. It's hard to argue these results are mere flukes. Over five Premier League matches, Villa have fallen short against all opponents in expected goals, and they rank the lowest in England for points accumulated (3.2 xPoints).

The Birmingham club are grappling with squad issues due to financial constraints. Among all Premier League teams, Aston Villa have the smallest roster, with just 23 players. This summer saw them part ways with key figures from the latter half of last season-Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio. In the latest league match, nine of the eleven players who started were part of the team even before Unai Emery's arrival three years ago. Yet, their key players from recent years are no longer delivering results. Much was expected from Ollie Watkins, but he has struggled to find the net, even missing a penalty against Bologna last Thursday.

    Fulham Team Overview

Fulham are one of Marco Silva's long-term projects. The Portuguese manager elevated the team from the Championship back in 2021 and has been gradually improving their results with modest resources. This season, the Cottagers are performing above their usual level (11th-13th place) and currently sit in eighth position. In five Premier League rounds, they've suffered just one defeat-against Chelsea (0-2), and even then, Silva's side didn't look like pushovers. In the following matches, Fulham have not dropped any points and are on a streak of two home victories. This week, their reserve squad also managed to edge out Cambridge United in the EFL Cup (1-0).

Marco Silva is executing a gradual generational shift in Fulham's attacking ranks. Last season's top scorer, 34-year-old Raúl Jiménez, is seeing less playing time. In the Premier League, he has started only once. The main striker role is being entrusted to Rodrigo Muniz, who has recorded 1 goal and 1 assist this season. However, he's not entirely inexperienced-this 25-year-old forward has journeyed with Fulham from the Championship to the top flight. The team's primary playmaker is Alex Iwobi. The former Arsenal and Everton player has tallied 1 goal and 2 assists in five EPL rounds, with a goal and an assist against Brentford earning him the Man of the Match accolade.

    Latest news

    Aston Villa

🎙 Aston Villa's head coach shared his emotions following their first win of the season against Bologna. "In the three years since I arrived, I've always felt that we're strong at home. We're confident, creative, and full of energy. Today, I felt that once again. Without bringing that energy, everything becomes tougher. This year, I'm feeling positive, excited, and motivated for the Europa League, but I know winning it will be very challenging," said Unai Emery.

❌ The issues within the Villans' squad extend beyond their transfer setbacks. Just as the Premier League entered its main phase, they lost two key players: Youri Tielemans and Amadou Onana. Additionally, Emiliano Martinez missed the match against Bologna. Reports indicate the goalkeeper has a minor muscle injury, which could affect his availability for the starting lineup against Fulham.

    Fulham

🎙 Fulham's head coach, following their victory over Cambridge in the EFL Cup, admitted that frequent squad rotation could affect the team's form. "Even if the players have quality, changing three or four players is not the same as replacing 11. For instance, our performance against Bristol was better than today," said Marco Silva. However, he also acknowledged that squad changes are necessary when competing in multiple tournaments: "Now is the time to recover the players who featured today, and after Thursday, we must focus solely on our next Premier League match."

❌ The team's first injury of the season has struck newcomer Kevin. The former Shakhtar Donetsk player made his Fulham debut in the cup match against Cambridge and played nearly the entire game. However, in the 87th minute, the winger injured his shoulder and was substituted.

    🟨 Referee and Yellow Cards

The main referee for the match is Andy Madley. Over his last 20 Premier League matches, he averages 3.4 yellow cards per game. This season marks his first time officiating in the top tier. We anticipate a busy debut for the English referee, as the last five head-to-heads between these teams have seen more than 3.5 yellow cards. Additionally, Fulham consistently pick up more than 1.5 bookings away from home (in 9 out of their last 10 games), while Aston Villa have done so in 5 of their last 6 Premier League matches. Our bet: total yellow cards over 3.5.

    Goals Prediction

Both teams have struggled to find the net early in the Premier League season. Fulham have failed to score more than two goals in 4 of their 5 league matches, and Aston Villa haven't managed it at all. In their last five meetings, Birmingham's side have typically been the ones finding the net: the aggregate score is 10-3 in Villa's favor. However, given their current form under Unai Emery, they seem unlikely to deliver much in attack. Our editorial prediction: total goals under 2.5.

    Corners Prediction

Fulham don't heavily rely on set-pieces from the corner flag-across their last 7 Premier League matches, the Cottagers have taken fewer than 4.5 corners in 6 of them. This trend has been consistent under Marco Silva for some time. Looking at their head-to-head history with Aston Villa since 2023, in 4 out of 5 encounters, the corner count has been similar. Here, we recommend betting on Fulham's total corners under 4.5, considering their away status.

    Editor's Prediction

Aston Villa are likely the bookmakers' favorites due to their past achievements, but we suggest focusing on current form this season. Fulham come out ahead here with a significant advantage. Evaluating the fitness of both squads this week, it's clear that Birmingham's side will approach Sunday's match not in peak physical condition. Unai Emery's limited bench restricts his ability to rotate the squad effectively across competitions. The Cottagers have a great chance to end Villa's five-match losing streak, potentially with a narrow 1-0 victory. The favorable odds on the visitors make it a cautious choice to back Fulham not to lose.
