Monaco vs Gornik Prediction 27 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Górnik started this summer in the Champions League - for the first time since 1988. But their European campaign could be over as early as August: they lost the first leg to Monaco 2-3 at home, despite pulling it back to 2-3 twice. The winners of the tie advance to the UEFA Conference League league phase, while the losers are out of Europe entirely. The second leg takes place on 27 August at the Stade Louis II.

    Head-to-Head

📊 The two clubs had never met before, and their first encounter was a nervy one. Mika Biereth opened the scoring on nine minutes, then Lamine Camara doubled the lead after the break - only for Górnik to respond. Erik Prekop pulled one back two minutes later, Paris Brunner restored the two-goal cushion, and Sondre Liseth gave the Poles fresh hope on 74 minutes. But Górnik couldn't find a third.

    Monaco Team Overview

Monaco finished seventh in Ligue 1 last season and reached the Conference League by a roundabout route. Lens won the Coupe de France having already qualified for the Champions League, which pushed the European places down the table. The season itself was a turbulent one: the club sacked Adi Hütter after matchday seven, brought in Sébastien Pocognoli, then parted ways with the Belgian over the summer.

Filipe Luís took charge in July. The 41-year-old Brazilian, a former Atlético Madrid and Chelsea player, began his managerial career at Flamengo, where he won the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian championship. His first competitive match as Monaco manager was the first leg in Zabrze, and Monaco opened their Ligue 1 campaign with a win at Le Havre. The schedule only gets busier from here: three days after the second leg, Monaco host Marseille.

    Gornik Team Overview

Górnik are 14-time Polish champions and the first Polish club to reach a European final, playing in the 1970 Cup Winners' Cup decider. Last season Michał Gašparík's side finished second behind Lech, and this summer has been a steady descent through the European rounds.

They were knocked out of the Champions League by Fenerbahçe, then out of the Europa League by Ferencváros, and Monaco are now their third European opponents of the summer. Górnik are yet to win any of their five European matches this season. In the Ekstraklasa, though, they have been perfect - three wins from three - but they have conceded in ten consecutive matches.

    Latest news

    Monaco

Monaco's injury list is lengthy. Ansu Fati, signed permanently from Barcelona in the summer on a contract until 2030, is injured and has already missed the start of Ligue 1. Mattis Abline is out after taking a knock to the foot in a pre-season friendly against Coventry, and Diop is also unavailable. Folarin Balogun is still working his way back to full fitness after the World Cup, while Takumi Minamino continues to recover from a cruciate ligament rupture in December. Aleksandr Golovin and Mamadou Coulibaly both served suspensions in the opening match, but Golovin has now completed his ban - he played the full 90 minutes against Le Havre.

    Gornik

❓ The visitors have their own injury concerns. Gašparík did not register Donio and Taoufik Ismaïl for this round, while Jarosław Kubicki has a broken arm. Sendre Liset picked up a red card in the league before the first leg but was eligible for the European tie - and scored. The schedule, at least, works in the Polish side's favour: due to their European commitments, the club postponed two Ekstraklasa fixtures, with the next one - against Raków - moved to 3 September, meaning Górnik had a free week after Zabrze.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Monaco predicted starting XI: Hradecky - Vanderson, Sané, Dyer, Mavisса - Détourbe, Zakaria, Camara, Golovin - Brunner, Biereth

📋 Górnik predicted starting XI: Schulze - Sachek, Janicki, Hosema, Janza - Urbański, Dietz, Bernardo - Federico, Prekop, Hlaň

    ⚽️ Goals Prediction

Monaco's home matches follow a clear pattern: they have scored more than one goal in 7 of their last 8 home games, but have not managed more than two in six consecutive matches. The combined totals are modest as well - in 12 of their last 13 home fixtures, both sides have scored fewer than five goals between them. Górnik fit that picture too, having not conceded by a margin of more than two goals in any of their last 14 away matches. The bet is Monaco Team Total - Under 2.5 at 1.61*.

    🚩 Corner Kick Prediction

The two sides are nearly identical when it comes to corners taken: over their last ten official matches, Monaco average 5.8 corners per game and Górnik 5.9. The difference is in what they concede: Monaco's opponents average 4.3, while Górnik's average 4.6. Górnik also need to overturn the deficit, which means crosses and second balls. The pick is Total Corners - Over 9.5.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The two sides have quite different disciplinary records. Over their last ten official matches, Salzburg players have picked up just five yellow cards, while their opponents collected 20. Mjällby show the opposite pattern: 25 cards of their own against 16 for their opponents. The Swedes foul freely, the Austrians rarely give referees cause to reach for a card, and together this pair consistently produces more than three bookings per match. The referee is Irfan Pelito, who averages 4.3 yellow cards across both his last 10 and last 100 matches. The bet is Total Yellow Cards - Over 2.5.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐️ Editor's Pick

The likely scenario here is an open game with chances at both ends. Górnik need just one goal to force extra time, but to go through in regulation they need a big win. They are not going to sit back in this position, and it is not really in their nature anyway - they have scored and conceded in 6 of their last 7 matches.

Monaco are unlikely to offer much resistance defensively - they have conceded in 9 of their last 10 matches. But they will contribute at the other end too: Monaco have scored in 16 of their last 17. The pick is Both Teams to Score - Yes. Predicted score: 2-1.
