Aarhus vs Benfica Prediction 27 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Aarhus and Benfica meet in the second leg of their Europa League play-off qualifying tie. The Portuguese side won the first match and head to Denmark with a comfortable advantage. Aarhus need to win by at least two goals to take the tie to extra time. The Danish club are nominally at home, but the match is being played not in Aarhus itself but at Cepheus Park Randers. All tickets have been sold, so Jakob Poulsen's side will have strong backing. Benfica can afford to sit on the scoreline, while the hosts will need to take risks and push numbers forward - a scenario that should open up space for the Portuguese on the counter.

    Head-to-Head

📊 In the first leg, Benfica were dominant throughout. The Lisbon side had 71% possession, won corners 11-1, and outperformed their opponents in expected goals - 5.04 xG to 0.46. AGF committed 17 fouls to Benfica's 10, while Benfica picked up two yellow cards to AGF's one. The 3-1 scoreline didn't fully reflect how one-sided the match was. AGF converted one of their few chances, but their defence repeatedly allowed Benfica to get into the box and finish.

    AGF Aarhus Team Overview

The start of the new season has been difficult for Jakob Poulsen's side. In Lisbon, the gap in individual quality was hard to ignore. Aarhus struggled to hold the ball for any length of time and allowed Benfica to win 11 corners.

Back in the league after the trip to Portugal, they drew 2-2 with Odense. Aarhus were the better side for much of the match, created plenty of chances and hit the woodwork several times. They were trailing 1-2 at half-time but kept pressing and equalised on 75 minutes through Rasmus Carstensen.

That match showed Aarhus can sustain a high press and get the ball into the box regularly. The problem is finishing: even with a clear territorial advantage, they couldn't find a winner.

In the second leg against Benfica, a cautious approach makes no sense. Aarhus need to score at least twice, which means the wide players will push forward more often and the defensive line will sit considerably higher. That will create more chances going forward, but also leave them exposed when they lose the ball.

Ahead of the first leg in Lisbon, Aarhus were without Frederik Tingager, Kevin Jacob, Nicolai Poulsen, Jonas Jensen-Abbew, Oscar Haugstrup and Thomas Kristjánsson. Their squad depth was already limited going into that first match.

    Benfica Lisbon Team Overview

Benfica go into the second leg in a near-ideal position. They do not need to win - even a one-goal defeat would be enough to send the Portuguese side through to the Europa League league phase.

Before facing Aarhus, Benfica eliminated Hearts 7-2 on aggregate, winning 6-1 at home before drawing 1-1 away. In the Primeira Liga, they opened with a draw against Académico de Viseu, then hammered Casa Pia 7-0.

The second leg against Hearts showed how Benfica can operate when holding a comfortable lead. Marco Silva made seven changes to the starting XI and his side dropped the intensity, settling for a draw. The margin over Aarhus is smaller, so rotation on that scale seems less likely, but Benfica may still manage the tempo and conserve energy where they can.

Their main advantage is what they do with the ball. In the first leg, Aarhus struggled badly to cope with Benfica's positional play. The Portuguese created chances both through the wide areas and by breaking into the central channels.

In Denmark, Benfica may sit a little deeper and allow Aarhus more of the ball, which would open up considerably more space on the counter. If the hosts do not score early, they will be forced to push forward in greater numbers.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

In the first leg, the two sides combined for three bookings and 27 fouls. AGF committed noticeably more fouls - 17 to Benfica's 10 - which is understandable given how much defensive work they had to do without the ball, repeatedly stopping the opposition on the break. Over their last ten matches, AGF have picked up 18 yellow cards and Benfica 13, with both sides committing 112 fouls across that period. On average, meetings between these two produce around three bookings.

The second leg should be more tense. AGF need to attack and press high, and when they lose the ball the hosts will have to stop counter-attacks. If Benfica score first, the emotional temperature of the match could rise sharply. Prediction: Total Yellow Cards - Over 2.5.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

Aarhus cannot afford to sit back and play it safe. They need to score at least twice, which means they have to be aggressive from the off and take risks in the first half. After the Benfica match, they created enough chances for two goals against Odense - though their defence again looked shaky and conceded twice.

Recent form also points to a high-scoring match. Aarhus have averaged 4.2 goals per game across their last ten matches, while Benfica's figure stands at 4.4. Both teams scored in 9 of Aarhus's last 10 matches and in 10 of Benfica's last 11 away games.

Aarhus can create chances through pressing and set pieces, but keeping a clean sheet looks extremely unlikely. Benfica found plenty of space even in the first leg, when Aarhus were more cautious. There should be even more room in this one. I'm going with Both Teams to Score - Yes at 1.63*.

    🚩 Corner Kick Prediction

In the first leg, the two sides combined for 12 corners, with Benfica winning 11 of them. The Portuguese side consistently attacked down the flanks, forcing Aarhus defenders to concede corners. The dynamic may shift in this match. Aarhus will likely see more of the ball and deliver more crosses, as they need to overturn a two-goal deficit. Benfica, meanwhile, will retain the ability to win set pieces off quick counter-attacks.

Over their last ten matches, Aarhus have won 57 corners and Benfica 76, averaging 5.7 and 7.6 per game respectively. Even if Benfica ease off in attack, the hosts need to keep pressing until the final whistle. A high volume of deliveries, blocked shots and clearances points towards a high corner count. I'd suggest looking at Total Corners - Over 8.5.

*Odds are indicative and may vary depending on the bookmaker.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

AGF suffered a painful defeat in Lisbon but kept their slim hopes alive. To have any chance of turning things around, they need an early goal. Jakob Poulsen's side showed against OB that they can press and create chances.

Benfica are clearly superior in individual quality and with the ball, though. An xG of 5.04 in the first leg confirms their win was no fluke. AGF will have to open up, which suits the visitors' counter-attacking game perfectly.

I expect the hosts to score with the backing of a full stadium, but Benfica will exploit the space and keep a sensational comeback well out of reach. The pick is Total Goals - Over 2.5. Correct score prediction: 2-1 to the Benfica. Eagles go through to the UEFA Europa League league phase on aggregate; AGF drop into the Conference League.
