Olimpia vs Vasco Da Gama Prediction 20 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Olimpia and Vasco da Gama will decide who advances to the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana after a goalless draw in Rio de Janeiro. The tie now moves to Asunción, where Olimpia have home advantage and the backing of a near-capacity crowd at the Defensores del Chaco. The 0-0 scoreline from the first leg doesn't tell the full story: Vasco dominated at São Januário, but the Paraguayans held firm and kept them out.

    Head-to-Head

📊 The two sides are already well acquainted from this year's Copa Sudamericana. In the group stage, Vasco thrashed Olimpia 3-0 in Rio de Janeiro, but Olimpia hit back in Asunción, winning 3-1. The first leg of the Round of 16 was also played in Brazil and ended 0-0. Across those three meetings in this competition, each side has one win and one match ended level.

    Olimpia Asuncion Team Overview

Olimpia arrive at this decisive match in decent shape. After the goalless draw with Vasco, they returned to the Paraguayan league and beat Sportivo Ameliano 2-1 in a comeback win - the visitors led on 70 minutes, but Sebastián Ferreira and Hugo Sandoval scored within six minutes of each other to turn it around. It was Olimpia's second win in five Clausura rounds.

That match also revealed something telling about Pablo Sánchez's side. Olimpia had a difficult first half against Ameliano and barely controlled the game. Sánchez himself admitted afterwards that his team could easily have gone in at half-time a goal down, but adjustments at the break made a clear difference - they looked considerably better in the second half. And this wasn't accidental: Olimpia deliberately conceded territory to Vasco in the first leg too, then tightened up after the break and looked to attack more through transitions.

The conditions for the Paraguayans are much more favourable this time around. In the first leg they had to absorb pressure at São Januário, whereas at home Olimpia can dictate the tempo themselves. With the tie level, there's no need to push forward in numbers from the first minute - which matters particularly against a Vasco side that has been struggling with finishing in recent matches.

There is also a squad consideration for the hosts. Ahead of the first leg, Juanfer Alfaro was ruled out with a stomach problem, while captain Richard Ortiz wasn't fit to start due to a knee issue. Ortiz's fitness remains the key question: getting him back in the starting XI would give Sánchez more experience and greater reliability in midfield.

    Vasco da Gama Team Overview

Vasco come into the second leg in much less convincing form. After the draw with Olimpia, they lost 3-0 to Santos in the Brazilian Championship. The problem wasn't a lack of attempts - Vasco had 19 shots, but only three were on target. Head coach Pedro Emanuel was candid after the match about his side's poor finishing.

This is a continuation of an issue the Brazilian press had already flagged early in the Portuguese manager's tenure. Vasco have become better organised defensively and are conceding fewer dangerous chances, but they are struggling to create at the other end. They also drew 0-0 with Bahia, despite some decent spells in that match.

There are personnel problems in attack as well. Ahead of the first leg against Olimpia, Mateus Carvalho, Andrés Gómez, Brenner and Carlos Cuesta were all unavailable. The club have since signed Argentine forward Facundo Colidio, who is expected to provide a new option at centre-forward - though expecting one new arrival to immediately solve all their attacking problems would be premature.

Vasco do have enough about them to stay in the tie. In the first leg they started the better side and caused problems with quick transitions. Adson remains one of their most dangerous players in the Copa Sudamericana, with three goals and three assists in the competition. But now he and his teammates will have to break down a more compact Olimpia side that has no need to open up.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The first leg produced four bookings, two on each side, in a tightly contested match. The intensity in Paraguay could stay the same or increase: with a quarter-final place at stake, both sides will need to foul more often to stop each other's attacks. I wouldn't be surprised to see physical football from the opening minutes. It's possible that neither team will hold their shape before half-time. Prediction: Total Yellow Cards - Over 3.5. This market landed in three of their previous head-to-head meetings in the current competition.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

Vasco's recent results point to problems in front of goal - they haven't scored in three consecutive matches. Olimpia have enough quality at home to create several dangerous moments, but the Paraguayans have no need to turn this into an open game. For Vasco it's the opposite: they need to score if they want to go through in normal time. But taking too many risks early on would be unwise - conceding once would mean they need two goals. The most logical outcome seems to be a two-goal match. Prediction: Total Goals - Under 2.5 at 1.63*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

In the first leg, Vasco had the territorial edge and spent most of the match on the front foot. The Brazilians earned 11 corners while the Paraguayans had none. The second leg could look different: Olimpia will see more of the ball on home turf, and Vasco will need to look for openings on the break. That said, if the score remains level, Emanuel's side will have to push harder after the break. I'm predicting Vasco da Gama Total Corners - Over 3.5. This has come in in 13 of Vasco's last 15 matches. Odds: 1.61*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary depending on the bookmaker.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

Olimpia came away from Rio with a favourable result after the 0-0 draw. They already proved in the group stage that they can beat Vasco at home, and the first leg gave them another reason for confidence - they showed they can contain this opponent after a tactical adjustment. Vasco, meanwhile, continue to struggle in front of goal: 19 shots against Santos produced just three on target and no goals. They have now gone three matches without scoring.

With that in mind, I'm expecting a cautious game in Asunción, and my main bet is Total Goals - Under 2.5. Home advantage and the more comfortable tie situation both point towards Olimpia. Correct score prediction: 1-0 to the hosts.
