Sligo are going through one of the toughest spells of the season. After 27 rounds of the Premier Division, the club sit bottom of the table and have not won a league match since May. In the summer, the club parted ways with John Russell, and former Cardiff City youth team coach Darren Purse was brought in as his replacement. The new manager inherited the team in a very difficult situation: at the time of his appointment, Sligo were at the foot of the table after 24 matches, and keeping their place in the Premier Division was named as the primary objective.

Purse's start has been mixed. In his first matches in charge, Sligo drew with Drogheda United and Dundalk, but then lost to Derry City 0:2. Purse himself, after his first weeks in the job, acknowledged that the team were showing character and commitment, but still lacked quality in possession. In the FAI Cup, the picture looks considerably more encouraging. In the previous round, Sligo comfortably beat Johnsboro 4:0. However, the gap in quality between the two sides was enormous, so that result is difficult to use as a reliable indicator of the team's readiness for the match against Kerry.

That said, the hosts have a significant advantage in playing at home. The Showgrounds is familiar territory for Sligo, while Kerry will be playing away against a Premier Division club for the first time in this season's Cup. On top of that, Sligo will surely be particularly motivated after last year's defeat, when the team threw away a 3:0 lead.

Kerry come into this match in a significantly better place. Colin Healy's side have picked up excellent momentum in recent weeks and have already moved closer to the First Division playoff places. In early August, Kerry beat Cobh Ramblers 3-0, with the club's official website describing it as one of the most complete performances of their season. The hosts scored three times before half-time and comfortably managed their lead after the break.

Before that, Kerry also convincingly beat Bray Wanderers 4-0, and earlier knocked out Shelbourne in the FAI Cup. The second-round match ended 2-2, but Kerry won the penalty shootout 6-5. Shelbourne play in the Premier Division, so that result alone carries real weight ahead of the trip to Sligo.

More importantly, the current Kerry side don't look like a team that simply shuts up shop against stronger opponents. In the league they regularly score several goals per match, and after shifting their tactical emphasis they have become much more confident at exploiting space in the final third. Talk of a playoff push is now open around the club, and supporters see a finish in the upper half of the table as a realistic target. However, in the most recent round Kerry lost to league leaders Cork 1-3, which ended their run of three consecutive league wins.

There is also the matter of last year's cup match against Sligo. Kerry already know how to play against this opponent, and that previous comeback should add to their confidence. The task is harder now - they will have to perform at the Showgrounds, where Sligo will have their supporters behind them. But on current form, Kerry look even more convincing than they did a year ago.
