Holstein Kiel vs St Pauli Prediction 14 August 2026

Details
The main thing

πŸ”Š Holstein Kiel will host St. Pauli in the second round of the 2. Bundesliga. Both teams started the season with draws, but the context is entirely different. Kiel let a 2-0 lead slip away at Darmstadt, while St. Pauli drew with Greuther FΓΌrth in their first match after relegation from the Bundesliga. An added storyline is the return to Holstein-Stadion of Marcel Rapp - the visitors' new head coach, who spent almost five years with Kiel before leaving in February 2026. So this is not just a northern derby, but a match with a great deal of personal and sporting context.

    Head-to-Head

πŸ“Š Recent head-to-head matches have gone in favour of St. Pauli. In April 2025, the Hamburg club beat Kiel away 2:1, and in November of the same season won at home 3:1. Across the last 24 head-to-head matches in total, Kiel have won seven, St. Pauli 13, with four draws.

πŸ”— The current meeting has one feature that was absent from previous ones: Marcel Rapp is now on the St. Pauli bench. The German managed Kiel from October 2021 to February 2026, then took charge of the Hamburg club in the summer following their relegation from the Bundesliga. Rapp himself acknowledges that the match will be a special one for him, but stresses that he is now fully focused on his new job.

    Holstein Kiel Team Overview

Kiel started the season with a fairly encouraging result, though the final 2:2 against Darmstadt left a feeling of a missed win. Thomas Wahlter's side scored twice before the break: first Guillermo Balsi found the net, then Phil Harres doubled the lead after a pass from Adrian Caprali. However, after the interval Darmstadt improved significantly and equalised late on.

Particularly notable is that Kiel showed quite quality play in attack. The team took advantage of two defensive errors, used the space between the lines well and could have settled the match before half-time. The problem came after Darmstadt took the initiative: Kiel were unable to close the game out reliably enough and allowed the hosts back into it.

This continues a trend from last season, when the team finished only 12th in the 2. Bundesliga with 41 points. The record stood at 11 wins, eight draws and 15 defeats, so Kiel begin the current season with the task of significantly improving on those results.

At the same time, the home factor in this match genuinely matters. Kiel are hosting a key rival at their own ground, where the crowd support will surely be particularly strong. On top of that, the hosts know Rapp's playing principles very well, having spent several years building their system under him. This could help Kiel set up their press and block the passing routes their former manager typically relies on.

    St. Pauli Team Overview

St. Pauli are starting a new chapter after relegation from the Bundesliga. They finished bottom last season, so the club significantly refreshed their squad over the summer and brought in Marcel Rapp. The management are not setting an immediate return to the top flight as a target: officially the aim is a place in the upper half of the table, although St. Pauli's squad is considered one of the most valuable in the 2. Bundesliga.

Their first match of the new season, against Greuther Fürth, ended 1-1. St. Pauli had more of the ball and tried to control the game through positional play, but struggled for a long time to create genuinely dangerous chances. After the break, Markus Mathisen put the hosts ahead with a header, but just six minutes later Felix Klauß restored parity.

That match illustrated the team's main problem at the start of the season. Rapp wants to make St. Pauli more dynamic and vertical, but the rebuild takes time. The most significant changes have come in attack: the club parted ways with several key players and are now counting on Martijn Kaars and Taichi Hara. At the same time, David Nemeth has been named the new captain.

For Rapp, the trip to Kiel will be the first serious away test for his new side. He knows the infrastructure, the players and the strengths of his former club inside out, but that advantage cuts both ways: Kiel are equally familiar with his principles. The tactical battle here could therefore prove more interesting than the opening results suggest. St. Pauli do have a higher squad ceiling and more experience against strong opponents. If the visitors can improve on their finishing compared to the Greuther FΓΌrth match, they are capable of taking all three points.

    Holstein Kiel

❌ The only confirmed squad absence for the hosts ahead of the match is defender Lasse Rosenboom, who remains sidelined due to injury.

    St. Pauli

❌ St. Pauli's injury list ahead of the match does not look critical either, although new signing Gísli Þórðarson suffered a serious thigh injury before the opening round and will undergo surgery.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

For me, this is one of the most difficult matches of the second round. Kiel have the home advantage and in the first round looked more convincing in the attacking phase. The hosts scored twice before half-time against Darmstadt and could have taken all three points had they handled the closing stages better.

On the other hand, St. Pauli have a deeper squad and are starting the season after relegation from the Bundesliga with serious motivation to return to the top. The first match showed that Rapp's side have not yet fully adapted to the new playing model, but their potential is higher. I also take into account the head-to-head record: in recent official meetings, St. Pauli have regularly found ways to open up Kiel's defence.

That said, backing an outright away win seems too risky to me. Kiel at home are capable of at least not losing, and having Rapp on the St. Pauli bench adds an element of unpredictability to the match. I see the optimal option as the both teams to score (yes) market: both first-round matches ended with goals, Kiel have already shown a fairly serious attacking potential, and St. Pauli should improve as they adapt to the new manager's system. On top of that, this bet came in across the last five head-to-head meetings between these clubs. My predicted score is 1:1.
