The main thing

🔊 Salzburg is set to host a meeting between two Spanish tactical masterminds and two clubs that rewrote their European histories last season. Paris Saint-Germain, the reigning two-time Champions League winners, will take on Aston Villa, who ended a 43-year wait for a European trophy by winning the Europa League. The previous meeting between the Parisian and Birmingham sides produced a goal-filled spectacle, and the UEFA Super Cup match at Red Bull Arena promises to be no less exciting.

    Head-to-Head

📊 The two sides have met just twice in their history - in the 2024/25 Champions League quarter-finals. It was a battle. PSG won the first match at Parc des Princes 3:1, while in the return leg at Villa Park, Aston Villa came out on top (3:2), but over the two legs it was the Parisians who went through (5:4).

    Paris Saint-Germain Team Overview

Luis Enrique has brought to Salzburg a team that is already used to winning European finals. PSG have won the Champions League for the second year in a row, beating Arsenal on penalty shootout. Last season they also became French champions for the fifth consecutive time, and now they are targeting a repeat of Real's achievement and aiming to become the second team in the modern era to defend the UEFA Super Cup.

A year ago, the red-and-blues had to work extremely hard for that trophy. They were losing to Tottenham until the 94th minute and snatched a draw thanks to Gonçalo Ramos's goal, before winning on penalties. But the Portuguese is no longer in the squad. Another significant loss is Lee Kang-in, who always provided quality impact from the bench, but left for Atletico in search of a starting role.

As for reinforcements, PSG have spent just €58.5 million, with the lion's share going on Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco. The new signing has not yet played a minute, and the team as a whole has played only two friendlies, which did not impress in terms of results. A heavy defeat to Mallorca (0:3) was followed by a draw with Man United (1:1), where the squad was much closer to the first team, yet the opposition looked considerably stronger. PSG managed just six shots with 0.68 xG and go into the Super Cup far from their best.

    Aston Villa Team Overview

Unai Emery led the Villans to their first European trophy since 1983. His side moved through the Europa League with confidence as clear favourites and won a one-sided final against Freiburg (3:0). The Spanish manager confirmed his status as the king of the competition. In the UEFA Super Cup, however, he has the opposite reputation - he has lost all three matches in the tournament while managing Sevilla and Villarreal. That is serious personal motivation.

Unlike PSG, the transfer window has taken a heavy toll on the Villans. They brought in €233.50 million but lost three key players: Lucas Digne, who moved to Paris, along with Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers. There are no guarantees that the signings of João Gomes and Johan Manzambi will quickly cover those losses. And relying on Alejandro Garnacho is a questionable idea. The Argentine, on loan from Chelsea, made no impression in pre-season friendlies.

The same could be said about the whole team. Aston Villa had a busy pre-season (six matches), during which they lost to every serious opponent they faced: Porto (1:2), Real Sociedad (2:4) and Bayern (1:2). Although the Villans' attack is still functioning well, which has extended their scoring run to 12 matches. Given that Paris players are not in optimal condition, the nominal away side can certainly count on finding the net.

    Latest news

    Paris Saint-Germain

❓ Paris have no injuries, but the physical condition of their key players is a serious concern. The main personnel question is the fitness of those returning from the World Cup. Achraf Hakimi, Marquinhos, Nuno Mendes, Bradley Barcola, Désiré Doué and Fabian Ruiz joined the squad later than the rest, so their readiness for the match is in doubt. The attacking focus will be on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who had a full pre-season. The Georgian recorded 16 (10+6) goal contributions in last season's Champions League.

    🔁 Updates from August 12, 4:40 (UTC):

    • PSG head coach Luis Enrique also expressed doubts about full fitness: "Some players only returned on Monday, others last week. We are trying to prepare as well as possible. I don't know what condition my players will be in for the match."
    • PSG's new signing, defender Luca Dinh, has been included in the squad for the game. PSG bought the Frenchman from Aston Villa just three days before the match. The transfer fee is €7 million.

    Aston Villa

❌ Amadou Onana tore his cruciate ligaments at the World Cup and will be out for a long time. Swiss newcomer Johan Manzambi, who also got injured during a breakthrough tournament for himself, won't be available either. John McGinn picked up an injury in a friendly, and his participation is still in doubt. The captain may yet be fit in time, but Emi Martinez is unlikely to be in goal, as he hasn't played a single pre-season match.

    Predicted line-ups:

📋 PSG probable line-up: Chevalier - Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes - Neves, Vitinha, Zaïre-Emery - Kvaratskhelia, Dembélé, Doué

📋 Aston Villa probable line-up: Bizot - Cash, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen - Gomes, Kamara - McGinn, Buendía, Garnacho - Watkins

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The main referee for the match is Somali official Omar Artan, who made history as the first representative of his country at a World Cup. However, border officers denied him entry into the United States despite a valid visa and a diplomatic passport, citing alleged links to suspected members of terrorist organisations. As an apology for that incident, this far-from-high-profile referee was given the Super Cup to officiate.

Artan averaged 2.5 yellow cards per match in the 2025/26 season, and showed 20 bookings across six 2026 World Cup qualifying matches. Despite the high stakes, the Super Cup is still not taken as seriously by teams as European final matches. So we expect attractive football rather than a battle full of fouls and confrontations. With that in mind, we are backing total under 3.5 yellow cards at 1.85*. In the two previous head-to-head meetings between PSG and Aston Villa, just one booking was shown in each game.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

These are two teams with contrasting approaches: PSG will look to dominate and create chances through positional play, while Villa will rely on quick transitions. In the two head-to-head matches played in 2025, fans saw both teams score and a total of more than 3.5 goals. That gives us every reason to expect an open, high-scoring game, and we are playing total over 2.5 goals at 1.90*. This bet has landed in six consecutive official matches for the Lions.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

PSG will have more of the ball and apply pressure, especially if Hakimi and Mendes feature on the flanks. In the Champions League final, the Parisians dominated Arsenal in corners 11-3, while Villa, for their part, lost the corners battle to every serious opponent during pre-season. Given the unpredictable nature of Super Cup matches, it is quite possible that the Birmingham side could take the lead and Enrique's men would need to chase the game - in which case a bet on PSG to win corners at 1.63* would certainly come through.

    🚀 Player Statistics Bet

Unlike many of his teammates who have only just returned from the World Cup, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has had a full pre-season. The winger was the standout performer in the Parisians' most recent European campaign, so it would be fitting if he were the key figure in the Super Cup match too. Matty Cash does not look like a defender capable of stopping the skilful Georgian, so we consider the odds of around 2.80* on Kvaratskhelia to score to be considerably overpriced - and that is exactly what we suggest taking advantage of.

    😱 Risky Bet

When Real Madrid are not involved in the Super Cup, the main ninety minutes have consistently ended in a draw - that has been the pattern this decade. Chelsea could not beat Villarreal (1:1), Man City could not beat Sevilla (1:1), and PSG could not beat Tottenham (2:2). The big clubs are far from their best form at the start of the season and find themselves unable to live up to their status as favourites. It is not hard to imagine history repeating itself. In that scenario, a combined bet on draw and both teams to score (yes) looks very attractive. The odds are 4.80*.

    🎯 Reliable Bet

The last time fewer than two goals were scored in a UEFA Super Cup match was in 2009, when Barcelona narrowly beat Donetsk's Shakhtar 1:0. Since then, total over 1.5 goals at 1.25* has landed in 16 consecutive matches - and our editorial team considers this the most reliable betting option. If the trend mentioned above is not convincing enough, it is worth noting that this mark was also cleared in 16 of PSG's last 17 official matches.

👀 If the Match Goes Off Script

The unavailability of PSG's key players and the tactics chosen by Unai Emery could make this match look nothing like what the Scores24 team expects. If Hakimi, Ruiz, Dembélé and other Paris stars do not start, the nominal home side will be considerably less dangerous in attack than usual. And if the opposing manager - who knows his compatriot Enrique's tactics well - also opts for a maximally defensive setup with a deep block, we may not see a goal fest. At least not before half-time. Do you believe that is how things could unfold? If so, take a look at total under 1 goal in the 1st half at 1.94*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

PSG are the favourites by virtue of their status, and Villa's injury problems seem to make a Paris win even more likely. However, it is crucial to consider the specific nature of Super Cup matchups. Champions League winners always approach them with less urgency than Europa League winners, for whom this is a historic chance at a trophy. We have seen proof of this more than once.

Those same Parisians last year were clearly not the better side against Tottenham. And Villa are capable of, if not winning, then at least repeating the Spurs result, causing the strongest team in the Old World serious problems. Trusting in an intriguing match, we predict a 2-2 draw at full time. The key bet is both teams to score (yes). It came in in each of Birmingham's last five pre-season matches.
