AEK Athens vs LASK Prediction 8 September 2026

Details
The main thing

🔉 This match is a significant occasion for both clubs. AEK are returning to the Champions League league phase for the first time in seven years, while for LASK it is a debut appearance altogether. Neither side is among the tournament's favourites, which makes this head-to-head a genuine opportunity to get off the mark. With a top-24 finish the target, beating a direct rival could prove decisive. Two attacking sides meet in Athens, and this first European encounter promises to be an entertaining one.

    Head-to-Head

📊 The two sides have never met in either official or friendly matches. This will be their first-ever encounter.

    AEK Athens Team Overview

The Greek club began the season with a defeat to OFI in the Super Cup, losing on penalties. Since then, Marko Nikolić's side have gone six matches without defeat. In Champions League qualifying, AEK came through comfortably against Bulgarian side Levski: a 4-0 win at home and a goalless draw away.

AEK are particularly dangerous at home. Their last three matches on home soil have all been convincing wins: against Levski (4-0), Iraklis (4-0) and Aris (5-0). Across those three games, the team created more than 8.0 xG in total. The Greeks favour a possession-based, positional style, working their way through opposition defences with sustained attacking play.

AEK's attack looks powerful. Striker Luka Jović already has three goals this season, while Barnabás Varga has six. Abubakar Koita has returned to the squad and managed to score against Aris. Lovro Majer continues to be the link between the lines, given a lot of freedom in central midfield. Both the wingers and the full-backs contribute to attacks out wide.

    LASK Team Overview

The Austrian champions have made a perfect start in the Bundesliga: five wins from five matches, with an aggregate score of 15-2. They lead the table outright. That form also produced one of the biggest upsets of the qualifying rounds. LASK lost 0-3 away to Celtic, but won the home leg 5-1 after extra time. The decisive goal in extra time was scored by Samuel Adeniran.

For all their attacking brightness, LASK have had defensive problems. With an xGA of 1.61 across the two matches against Celtic, they conceded four. Against Wolfsberg in the league they conceded one despite playing with a man advantage, though they won 3-1. They concede regularly, but make up for it with their goalscoring.

The attacking focal point is Christoph Lang, who already has nine goals in the 2026/27 season. Lang is not a big physical presence, so LASK are unlikely to rely on wide crosses. He operates as a false nine, looking for openings through the centre and by drifting in from the flanks. AEK's taller defenders will have the advantage in the air, but Lang's danger lies elsewhere - in his movement and runs.

    Latest news

    AEK Athens

At the end of August, AEK signed defensive midfielder Kerwin Arriaga. He has already registered an assist in a cup match against Nestos. The hosts have no injured or suspended players.

    LASK

LASK will be without Samuel Adeniran, who is injured. The forward has seven goals this season, so his absence is a significant one. Ramiz Harakate  will also miss the match. Sasha Kalajdzic is a doubt as he continues to recover from injury - his fitness remains uncertain. The team played in the Austrian Cup during the week, but seven of their key players were rested, so the Austrians should be fresher.

    📋 Predicted Lineups

AEK: Thomas Strakosha, Lazaros Rota, Harold Moukoudi, Filipe Relvas, Stavros Pilios, Milan Vitalish, Răzvan Marin, Mijat Gaćinović, Lovro Majer, Barnabás Varga, Luka Jović

LASK: Lukas Jungwirth, Xavier Mbuyamba, João Victor Tornic, Andrés Andrade, Kasper Jørgensen, Melairo Bogarde, Saša Horvat, Ivan Dibango, Kryštof Daněk, Moses Usor, Christoph Lang

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The referee is Portuguese official Luís Godinho. In last season's European competition he averaged 20.6 fouls and four cards per match, and there is no reason to expect him to change his approach. The match is unlikely to be particularly rough, but it will not pass without bookings either. We are going with Total Yellow Cards - Under 4.5 at 1.71*.

    ⚽️ Goals Prediction

Both sides look to play attacking football. LASK have posted an xG above 2.30 in each of their last three matches. AEK have beaten three opponents by a wide margin at home this season. The statistics also point towards goals: AEK have scored at home in 12 of their last 13 matches, while LASK have failed to score away just once in their previous 18 away games. Both teams are capable of creating chances and neither is likely to sit back. We are going with Both Teams to Score - Yes at 1.61*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Both teams' styles point towards attacking football. LASK have concentration issues over the full 90 minutes - the Austrians concede frequently and often find themselves chasing the game. We expect attacks from both sides, which should lead to plenty of set pieces. Total Corners - Over 8.5 is available at 1.54*.

    🚀 Player Stat Bet

Barnabás Varga has been AEK's main attacking threat at the start of the season. He has six goals this season and has scored in four consecutive matches, including two braces - one of them in the Champions League match against Levski. Given his current form, Varga to Score looks a realistic outcome, priced at 2.46*.

    😱 Risky Bet

LASK have scored after the break in 12 of their last 13 away matches and have won the second half in 9 of their previous 10 games. AEK could start brightly at home, score twice before the interval and then try to manage the game in the second half. LASK may take advantage of that, find an extra gear through substitutions and win the second half. We are going with LASK to Win the Second Half at 4.25*.

    🎯 Reliable Bet

AEK have gone unbeaten at home in 12 of their last 13 matches. Across all competitions, their unbeaten home run stretches to 13 games. The Greeks are dependable on their own ground and rarely lose even to strong opponents. AEK Not to Lose is priced at 1.24*.

👀 If the Match Goes Another Way

At home, AEK have kept a clean sheet in 5 of their last 6 matches, winning all five of those by a margin of at least three goals. LASK occasionally produce low-scoring away performances - this season that was the case at Celtic, where they lost 0-3 - and over their last ten away matches the Austrians have failed to score on three occasions. Against that backdrop, Both Teams to Score - No at 2.23* could come in, though overall we expect both teams to find the net.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Prediction

AEK at home are a force. The Greeks have won 9 of their last 11 European matches on their own ground. LASK have problems in attack due to Adeniran's injury. Lang's good form alone may not be enough to take anything from Athens. Experience at this level is also on the hosts' side - Marko Nikolić's side compete at this level more regularly, even if they haven't reached a Champions League league phase in seven years. The home ground and crowd support should help AEK take all three points. We're backing an AEK win. Predicted score: 2-1.
