Werder Bremen vs Leipzig Prediction 5 September 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 The second round of the Bundesliga continues in Bremen with Werder taking on RB Leipzig. The two sides come into this match in very different moods: Leipzig made a confident start to the season by thrashing Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Werder were given a painful lesson by Freiburg. It has been a particularly difficult beginning for Daniel Thioune's side, having already lost Jens Stage before the first matchday, and then learning of a serious injury to Justin Njinmah after the Freiburg game. Leipzig, by contrast, have gained the confidence their new manager Marco Demichelis needed, and will now look to build on that at the Weserstadion.

    Head-to-Head

📊 Recent head-to-head history is firmly in Leipzig's favour. The Saxony side have gone 12 consecutive Bundesliga matches without losing to Werder, and the last two meetings both ended in Leipzig victories - 2-1 in Bremen in April and 2-0 at home in November last year.

    Werder Bremen Team Overview

Werder's start to the season could hardly have gone worse. Daniel Thioune's side lost 4-1 to Freiburg, and were already 2-0 down at half-time. When the third goal went in early in the second half, the game was effectively over. The only positive was a goal from Dariusz Stalmach, but it was never going to change the result.

Thioune's main priority now is to stabilise the defence. Conceding four against Freiburg was a worrying sign, particularly given that Leipzig showed pace and variety in attack in the opening round. That said, Werder do have the advantage of home ground: at the Weserstadion the team are capable of playing with considerably more confidence, and after a heavy defeat the manager will surely demand a more aggressive response. So the hosts are unlikely to simply hand over the initiative and will look for chances through quick attacks.

    Leipzig Team Overview

Leipzig made almost the perfect start to Martin Demichelis's new project. In the opening round they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach convincingly, and after a relatively even first half they took complete control in the second. Goals from Rocco Reitz, Antonio Nusa and Xavi Simons gave the Saxons a comfortable win. For Demichelis, who joined the club in the summer following an unexpected managerial change, getting three points straight away matters a great deal. Leipzig also remain one of the youngest and most energetic squads in the division, and the return of Christopher Nkunku adds another option in attack.

Last season's win at the Weserstadion showed that Leipzig can perform well there even when the hosts have the territorial advantage. The situation looks even more favourable for the visitors now: Werder suffered two serious injuries and conceded four goals in the first round, while Leipzig kept a clean sheet. Demichelis will therefore almost certainly look to play to his side's strengths - pace, pressing and quick transitions.

    Latest news

    Werder Bremen

❌ The situation looks even more serious due to squad losses: Jens Stage suffered a severe muscle injury just before the match and, according to the club's assessment, will not play until the end of the year. It then became known that Justin Njinmah will also miss several months due to a thigh injury.

💰 Werder tried to compensate for Stage's loss by signing Youri Regeer from Ajax, and on the final day of the transfer window brought in Moussa N'Diaye on loan from Anderlecht. However, the newcomers will have to adapt quickly, as already in the second round the team faces an opponent who is in significantly better form.

    Leipzig

💊 Leipzig head into matchday two with no reports of any significant new injury to their first-team squad, so Martin Demichelis may keep the same winning lineup from the 3-0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.

❌ Erjan Nyland, Assan Ouédraogo, Christoph Baumgartner, Romulo, Lukas Klostermann and Viggo Gebel remain in the treatment room.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

This doesn't look like an obviously feisty match. Werder will have to do a lot of work without the ball, but Leipzig prefer to move the ball forward quickly rather than drawing out positional attacks. On top of that, the hosts will be focused primarily on the quality of their football after the defeat to Freiburg, rather than constant physical duels. So I wouldn't set expectations too high for the number of bookings. Bet: Total Yellow Cards - Under 4.5.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

Werder conceded four goals in the first round and now face a side that scored three and kept a clean sheet. The hosts have enough attacking threat and home support to exploit certain weaknesses in Leipzig's game, as they did last season, so I'm not expecting a completely one-sided affair. On the other hand, Werder's injury problems and their poor defensive display against Freiburg make a second consecutive high-scoring match a realistic scenario. Recent head-to-head meetings have tended to be more closed affairs, but the current situation points towards a more open, higher-scoring game. Bet: Total Goals - Over 2.5 at 1.5*.

    🚩 Corner Kick Prediction

Leipzig should enjoy territorial dominance, particularly if Werder are pushed back towards their own penalty area after an initial spell of pressure. That creates good conditions for the visitors to win corners: the pace of Nusa, Bakayoko and Baku down the flanks is likely to produce blocked crosses and cutbacks on a regular basis. At the same time, Werder are unlikely to abandon attacking play entirely at home and should earn a few set pieces of their own. The overall total should therefore approach double figures. Bet: Total Corners - Over 8.5 at odds of 1.52*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editorial Prediction

Leipzig go into the second matchday in a considerably stronger position. Demihelis's side made a confident start to the season, kept a clean sheet, and now travel to a side they have not lost to in the Bundesliga in 12 consecutive matches.

Werder need a response after the 1-4 defeat at Freiburg, but the absences of Stage and Ndjinma make things harder. The hosts can put up a fight, especially with the Weserstadion behind them, but over the course of the match the advantage should lie with the more balanced Leipzig side.

Main bet: RB Leipzig to win. My predicted score: 1-2.
