Paderborn vs Freiburg Prediction 5 September 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 In the second round of the Bundesliga, Paderborn will play their first home match since returning to the top flight. Their opponents are Freiburg, who made a strong start to the season by thrashing Werder 4-1. The hosts, for their part, picked up a point away at Mainz, keeping a clean sheet. The question now is whether Ralf Kettemann's side can contain a considerably more dangerous Freiburg attack.

    Head-to-Head

📊 The last meeting between the sides came in November 2023 in the DFB-Pokal and ended in a surprise 3-1 win for Paderborn. Before that, the two clubs met in the Bundesliga in the 2019/20 season: Paderborn won 2-0 in Freiburg, while the home fixture ended 1-3.

    Paderborn 07 Team Overview

Paderborn's return to the Bundesliga got off to a positive start in terms of results. Ralf Kettemann's side drew 0-0 away at Mainz to earn their first point straight away. The hosts had the better of the match and created chances, but Paderborn held firm through disciplined defending and the reliability of goalkeeper Nauel Noll.

Particularly notable was the fact that the newly promoted side were not unsettled by the high tempo and pressure from their opponents. Mainz stepped up the pressure significantly in the second half, yet Paderborn's defence continued to hold its shape. For a team whose primary objective this season is to stay in the top flight, that kind of result on the opening day carries real weight.

There is, however, an obvious problem for the hosts: their attack has not been working well enough so far. Against Mainz, Paderborn created very few dangerous moments and had little in the way of goalscoring opportunities. Against Freiburg they will need to play considerably more boldly, as sitting in a low block for long periods could lead to serious difficulties.

    Freiburg Team Overview

Freiburg made a significantly brighter start. Julian Schuster's side thrashed Werder 4-1 in the opening round, with the attack looking particularly impressive. The standout performer was Yuito Suzuki, who scored a hat-trick, while Igor Matanovic also got on the scoresheet. For Freiburg, this continues a strong run of form. The team built up a good rhythm through their Conference League qualifying matches and the DFB-Pokal, and have now carried that productivity into the league.

That said, there are some questions surrounding the visitors. Freiburg are traditionally dangerous on the counter and down the flanks, but against Paderborn they will need to take the initiative and control the game. This is where a problem that German pundits have noted may surface: in positional play, Schuster's side can sometimes lack quality and ideas.

At the moment, though, Freiburg look like the more cohesive and settled team. After scoring four goals in the opening round, Schuster is unlikely to make significant changes to his attacking combination. Suzuki, Matanovic and Derry Scherhant should be capable of causing the home defence plenty of problems.

    Latest news

    Paderborn 07

❌ Paderborn head into the match against Freiburg with some squad concerns. Ralf Kettemann will be without five players. Luis Nyamekyе Awortwie-Grant is still recovering from a ligament injury, Lasse Eickel is out with a back problem, and Sebastian Klaas continues his treatment for an adductor muscle issue. Sven Michel is also unavailable with a groin injury, while Timur Gayret faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after sustaining a serious knee injury.

    Freiburg

❌ On the injury front, the main absentee remains Florent Muslija, who is expected to miss a significant period with a cruciate ligament injury. Patrick Osterhage is also a doubt for the second-round match due to a muscle injury, having already missed the team's previous two games.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The main argument for a high number of bookings is the likely style of the match. Paderborn will have to defend for long periods against a stronger opponent, and stopping Freiburg's quick attacks without a lot of physical challenges will be difficult. The appointment of Max Burda adds further interest. The referee averages 5 yellow cards per match and records around 23.6 fouls. With that in mind, we expect a fairly combative game and suggest looking at Total Yellow Cards - Over 3.5.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

Paderborn showed excellent defensive organisation in the first round, but Freiburg represent a completely different level of attacking threat. Schuster's side have already scored four goals against Werder, and Yuito Suzuki is in fine form. Paderborn are at home, though, and are unlikely to spend another 90 minutes purely defending. After a goalless draw in Mainz, the hosts will need to look for more in attack. Total Goals - Over 2.5 at 1.67* therefore looks like the best option.

    🚩 Corner Kick Prediction

Freiburg can be expected to enjoy a clear advantage in possession and attacking volume in this match. The visitors make active use of the flanks, and their persistent crossing and attempts to create danger down the wings should generate a number of corners. Paderborn, meanwhile, will be looking to hit back on the counter and will carry out their own spells of positional play. The overall corner count could therefore end up fairly high. My pick is Total Corners - Over 8.5 at odds of 1.73*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editorial Prediction

Paderborn deserve credit for their result in Mainz. The team showed good organisation, character and defensive solidity from the off. However, their first home match back in the Bundesliga will be a considerably sterner test.

Freiburg are in excellent form, have started the season confidently and have a higher-quality attacking unit. That said, the visitors are unlikely to completely avoid giving chances away at the back, especially if Paderborn get the crowd behind them.

We see Freiburg as favourites, but the most reliable-looking bet is Both Teams to Score - Yes - at the Home Deluxe Arena, Paderborn have scored and conceded in 11 consecutive matches. The likely outcome is a 2-1 away win.
