Dinamo Zagreb vs Kaunas Prediction 4 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Željko Sopič was born in Zagreb, supported Dinamo as a kid, played for the club, coached the reserves and even had a spell as caretaker in charge of the first team. On August 4, he arrives at Maksimir on the other side. The Croatian coach brings with him the Lithuanian champions - a club that has already made history in their country - but the favourites here are obvious, and Sopič would be the first to admit it.

    Head-to-Head

📊 The two sides have never met before. For Kauno Žalgiris, this is their first-ever Champions League qualifying campaign - previously the club had only featured in the Conference League. Their manager knows Maksimir well, though.

    Dinamo Zagreb Team Overview

The Croatian champions made it through to the third round the hard way. Away to Thun, Mario Kovačević's side drew 1-1, then found themselves 0-2 down at home by the 22nd minute. What saved them: a red card for Marco Bürki on 67, late goals from Dion Drena Beljo and Lukáš Kačavenda, and a strike from Mories Valinčič on 112 minutes - 3-2 on the night, 4-3 on aggregate. It was the club's 100th European win at Maksimir.

The numbers from that evening tell you why the Lithuanians are in trouble: 76% possession, 29 shots, 14 corners. But the bigger point - Dinamo haven't lost since February 2026, over five months without a defeat. And the Lithuanian side is far from the toughest test they've faced in that run.

    Zalgiris Kaunas Team Overview

Last year, the Kaunas side won the A Lyga for the first time in their history. This summer, they made their first-ever appearance in Champions League qualifying. The records keep coming. They got past Kosovo's Drita and Faroese side KI Klaksvik - 0:0 away and 1:0 at home, the winner coming from Leon Krekovic on 85 minutes - and Kauno Žalgiris became only the second Lithuanian club after Žalgiris to secure a place in a European group stage. That also means at least €3.17 million in prize money.

Defence is their main strength. Four matches in Champions League qualifying without a defeat, and they kept two clean sheets against Klaksvik. The league form was shakier, though - the team was struggling at the start of the European campaign and sat third. In the summer they brought in Croatian Ivan Fiolic from Gorica.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The match has been assigned to a Belgian crew led by Erik Lambrechts, with Jo De Weirdt and Kevin Monteny as assistants, and Dutchman Clay Ruperti on VAR. Last December, the 41-year-old referee was awarded UEFA's elite category.

Lambrechts' numbers vary depending on the sample: across 291 career matches it's around 4.1 bookings per game, but in seven matches last season in the Belgian Pro League it was 4.9. We're going off the more recent data, even if the sample is small. There's plenty to fight over here - Dinamo will push forward, the visitors will meet them with fouls on the edge of the box. In the home match against Thun, the hosts racked up 15 fouls, and the opponents ended up with ten men. We're backing total yellow cards over 3.5.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

The gap in attacking output is significant. In this qualifying campaign, Dinamo are averaging two goals per game; Kauno Žalgiris are at 1.25. But the more interesting number is at the back - the Lithuanians have conceded just 0.75 per match with two clean sheets, while the Croatians haven't kept one.

A goal for the hosts isn't really in doubt: Dinamo have scored in 22 of their last 23 matches, and in 17 of 18 at home. The question is the overall volume - and both sides pull it down. The Croatians themselves have scored three or fewer in 10 of their last 11 matches and in six straight home games, while in Kauno Žalgiris' away matches total goals under 3.5 has landed six times in a row. Taking it at 1.59*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Against Thun, Dinamo delivered 14 corners - with 76% possession and 29 shots, that's no surprise. The Lithuanian numbers cool things down a bit: over their last ten matches, opponents averaged 3.8 corners, Kauno Žalgiris themselves averaged 4.4, and the combined total sat at 8.2.

Those figures come from the A Lyga, though, where teams don't press the Lithuanians nearly as hard. Against Thun, the Croatians alone put in more corners than both teams typically combine for in an average Žalgiris away match. Dinamo total corners over 4.5 looks like a workable option.

*Odds are approximate and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

Sopič himself admitted the opponent has a clear edge in budget and squad quality. Hard to argue: the Croatian side is worth considerably more than their Lithuanian counterparts. That said, don't write off Kauno Žalgiris - they've already come through two rounds and, unlike a lot of debutants, they know how to defend.

The numbers back that up: Dinamo haven't lost in 21 straight matches, including 10 at home. But the visitors are also on a nine-game unbeaten run, and they've covered the +2.5 handicap in 50 matches. No blowout expected here - but a two-goal margin feels about right for the hosts. The bet is Dinamo Zagreb to win with a -1.5 handicap. Predicted score: 2-0.
