Ukraine vs Northern Ireland Prediction 2 October 2026

Details
Key points

📢 Who will finish the first half of the current Nations League campaign on a high? Ukraine and Northern Ireland have made noticeably more confident starts than the other two sides in the group, and both have four points after two matchdays. A win in the upcoming fixture will take one of them clear at the top of the group and give them a solid platform in the race for first place. The fact that the match is being played at the Anton Malatinský Stadium in Slovakia adds an extra layer of intrigue.

🔁 This prediction is updated on match day. Keep an eye on the Current News section.

Infrequent head-to-head encounters offer no clear advantage to either side.

📊 Ukraine and Northern Ireland have met very rarely. Since 2004, the two sides have played just twice - once in an official fixture and once in a friendly. Their most recent encounter came in 2021, which was the friendly. Ukraine edged that one 1-0, though the match was played on their home soil, so that result shouldn't be read too directly into the upcoming meeting.

Four points fail to mask Ukraine’s attacking struggles

Ukraine have been hovering between League A and League B in the Nations League. This time they find themselves in a group where a first-place finish and direct promotion back to the top tier is a realistic target. Alongside Northern Ireland, the group contains Hungary and Georgia, whom Ukraine have already faced in the first two rounds. Given that both matches were away from home, four points looks a decent return. They beat Hungary 1-0 first, then drew 0-0 with Georgia.

After the win over Hungary, Ukraine would surely have been expecting three points against a Georgia side with a more modest squad, but they failed to score and had to settle for a draw. The performance did not really merit a win either - just 7 shots with a combined xG of 0.21. Georgia were considerably more threatening, firing 14 shots and generating an xG of at least 1.04, so it is arguably Georgia who should be the more satisfied with that result.

Northern Ireland make the most of their defensive approach

Ahead of the tournament, Northern Ireland were widely regarded as the most likely side to be relegated from League B, having come up from League C in the previous Nations League. So far, though, they have been something of a surprise: four points from two games and a provisional first place, ahead of Ukraine on goal difference. The results have been almost mirror images of each other. In the first round they beat Georgia away by the minimum margin (1-0), then drew 0-0 with Hungary at home. For a side written off as group outsiders before a ball was kicked, that is a very respectable start.

It would be wrong to say Northern Ireland have left points on the table. Against Georgia they were the inferior side, came close to conceding a penalty, but ultimately scored themselves in stoppage time to snatch the win. Against Hungary they again opted for a cautious approach and spent most of the match defending, despite having home advantage. In attacking terms, though, the game was fairly even: 10-13 in shots and 0.69 versus 1.00 in xG. A draw there looks a perfectly fair result.

    Latest news

    Ukraine

❓ Ukraine have not suffered any new injury setbacks following the match against Georgia. Aleksandr Pikhalenok picked up a knock during the game and was substituted at half-time, but there have been no reports of him being unavailable, though his condition still needs to be monitored. There are no new suspensions either, and Aleksandr Nazarenko has served his ban following his red card against Hungary and is available again.

    Northern Ireland

✅ Northern Ireland have no new injuries following their goalless draw with Hungary.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Predicted starting XI for Ukraine: Trubin - Zabarnyi, Bondar, Matvienko - Sarapiy, Ocheretko, Brazhko, Mykolenko - Tsygankov, Zubkov - Vanat.

📋 Predicted starting XI for Northern Ireland: Charles - Atcheson, McConville, Brown - Hume, Galbraith, S. Charles, Devenny - Price, Donley, Kelly.

    ⚽️ Goals Prediction

Northern Ireland's run of 7 consecutive matches with under 2.5 goals speaks clearly to how low-scoring their games tend to be. More broadly, neither side has been free-scoring in the current tournament: both Ukraine and Northern Ireland are averaging just 0.5 goals per match. Given these facts, it makes sense to consider Total Goals - Under 2.5 at odds of 1.56*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Remarkably, Ukraine have barely threatened from corners in the current Nations League campaign - they earned just 2 corners against Hungary and none at all against Georgia. Northern Ireland are clearly the weaker side, but a sharp jump in that particular statistic still seems unlikely. Our pick is Ukraine Team Total Corners - Under 5.5 at odds of 1.59*.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

Ukraine's matches have been notably heated so far. The referee showed 10 yellow cards in their game against Hungary, and 6 against Georgia - also a significant number. The fact that this is a meeting between the group leaders only adds to the tension, so here we're taking Total Yellow Cards - Over 3.5 at odds of 1.70*.

    🚀 Player Statistics Bet

One of the reasons Northern Ireland have yet to concede in this campaign is the assured performances of Pierce Charles. The goalkeeper was particularly impressive against Georgia, making 4 saves, and was reliable against Hungary too, even if he wasn't tested as heavily there (1 save). Ukraine are likely to have plenty of shots on goal in the upcoming match, so there's a case for Pierce Charles Total Saves - Over 2.5 at odds of 1.55*.

    😱 Risky Bet

Watching Group 2 of League B has been a tough watch: goals are scarce, chances are few, and both teams tend to focus on not making mistakes at the back. Northern Ireland fit that pattern particularly well - they kept a clean sheet in 5 of their last 6 Nations League matches and have yet to concede in the current tournament either. Ukraine, for their part, have had their share of problems in attack, so as a riskier option it's worth considering Ukraine to Score: No at odds of 3.76*.

    🎯 Reliable Bet

Ukraine very rarely lose in the Nations League. In 7 of their last 8 matches in the competition, they have at least avoided defeat, even when they haven't looked particularly bright going forward. For the safer option, we're taking Ukraine Not to Lose at odds of 1.23*.

👀 If the Match Goes Another Way

An alternative scenario shouldn't be ruled out. If one side scores an early goal, the team behind will have to open up immediately, push their lines higher and take more risks, which will in turn give the opposition space on the counter-attack. In that case, the match could quickly become far more entertaining than expected before kick-off. The alternative bet is therefore Total Goals - Over 2.5 at odds of 2.40*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editorial Prediction

The bookmakers consider Ukraine clear favourites, and it is hard to disagree with that assessment. The match is being played on neutral ground, but Ukraine are noticeably stronger overall in terms of squad quality: many of their players turn out for top European clubs, and the team sit almost twice as high in the FIFA rankings (33rd versus 70th). That said, Northern Ireland cannot be written off: they have made a very solid start to the tournament, have the same four points, and have already shown they can dig in, defend deep and squeeze the most out of limited chances. The more logical call is Total Goals - Under 2.5, given that just two goals have been scored across the four matches in this group so far. We are expecting a 0-0.
