Cyprus vs Armenia Prediction 2 October 2026

Details
Key points

🔊 Cyprus and Armenia meet on 2 October in Nicosia in the third round of the UEFA Nations League. After two matches, the two sides are in different positions: Armenia have three points, while Cyprus have just one. Their respective gaps to leaders Montenegro already stand at three and five points, so neither side can afford to drop points in this head-to-head. Cyprus began the tournament with a defeat to Montenegro and then drew 0-0 with Latvia. Armenia started with a win over Latvia but then lost at home to Montenegro 2-3, conceding the decisive goal late on. Eghishe Melikyan's side now travel to Cyprus, with another meeting against Montenegro to follow just three days later.

Armenia have avoided defeat in their recent head-to-head encounters

📊 That said, the two most recent meetings were friendlies. On 13 November 2017, Armenia won 3-2, and in 2023 in Yerevan the match ended 2-2.

Cyprus failed to capitalize on their advantage

Cyprus could have taken more than a point from their trip to Latvia. In the match on 28 September, Apostolos Mantzios's side had 18 shots, hit the post twice, held 67% possession and won 11 corners. None of those moments led to a goal, though, and the game ended 0-0.

Before that, Cyprus lost 2-1 to Montenegro, despite scoring first and staying in contention for a positive result for much of the match. In general, the team make fairly active use of the flanks and look to get the ball into the final third quickly. The presence of Marcus Edwards, Grigoris Kastanos and Ioannis Pittas gives the hosts several different options for moving the ball forward.

    Armenia respond with an attack

Armenia found ways to threaten in both matches and scored four goals across the two fixtures. Melikyan's side beat Latvia 2-0 and then came back twice to level against Montenegro, eventually losing 2-3 with the decisive goal conceded only in the 89th minute.

Eduard Spertsyan remains the main creative force. The midfielder scored one of Armenia's two goals against Montenegro, a match in which they had 10 shots, four of which were on target. Spertsyan is also one of the primary outlets for set-pieces and long-range efforts, so if the visitors enjoy territorial dominance, his influence should be particularly prominent.

    Latest news

    Cyprus

❌ Mantzios has some serious selection problems. Nick Tsaroulla and Konstantinos Sotiriou will both miss the match through suspension, having picked up yellow cards against Latvia that triggered a ban. Konstantinos Laifis had previously been a doubt through injury, while Evagoras Antoniou was called up to the squad as an additional player.

    Armenia

❌ Armenia's key problem concerns their defence. Julio Bueno picked up an injury in the match against Latvia and is out for the rest of the current international window. The squad had already lost Styopa Mkrtchyan and Sergey Muradyan to injuries before that, which has forced Melikyan to use rather unconventional centre-back combinations. After the defeat to Montenegro, the manager specifically noted that the team ran out of steam physically towards the end, and the lack of rotation options remains a serious problem.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Predicted starting XI for Cyprus: Fabiano - Pileas, Sielis, Panagiotou, Malekkidis - Kastanos, Artymatas - Edwards, Kosti, Loizou - Pittas.

📋 Predicted starting XI for Armenia: Cancarevic - Bandikyan, Piloyan, Petrosyan, Harutyunyan, Tiknizyan - Serobyan, Ugochukwu, Spertsyan, Shaghoyan - Miranyan.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

Both sides have already had issues with bookings. Cyprus have picked up seven yellow cards in two matches, with two players suspended for this fixture. Armenia have received three bookings over the same period. In their match against Montenegro, Melikyan's side also collected two yellow cards while committing 10 fouls.

The stakes are fairly high: Cyprus need to close the gap on their rivals, while Armenia cannot afford to fall behind Montenegro. Midfield battles could get tight, particularly if the score stays level for a long period. The selection is Total Yellow Cards - Over 3.5.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

There are arguments both for a high-scoring game and for a cautious one. Armenia have scored four goals in two matchdays but have also conceded three, with their defence regularly allowing opponents to create chances. Cyprus have scored just one goal in the Nations League so far, but in their last match they had 14 shots and hit the woodwork twice.

The head-to-head record doesn't point clearly in either direction: the last two meetings ended 3-2 and 2-2, though several years passed between those games. In the current tournament, both sides have shown they can create chances, but Cyprus have had serious problems with finishing while Armenia have struggled for defensive reliability.

Given the importance of the match and the injury losses in both defensive lines, I wouldn't set the bar too high. A 1-1 or 1-0 scoreline is a perfectly plausible outcome here, so my pick is Total Goals - Under 2.5 at 1.75*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Cyprus showed a very high volume of wide play in their last match: against Latvia they won 11 corners and spent most of the game in the opposition half. Armenia also earned 12 corners across their first two fixtures, meaning both sides are capable of generating the necessary number of set pieces regardless of the final scoreline.

A low-scoring scenario does not necessarily mean a low corner count. If the score remains tight for long periods, Cyprus as the home side will be pushed to keep working the flanks, while Armenia will be able to respond on the break. With that in mind, Total Corners - Over 7.5 is worth considering at odds of 1.49*.

    😱 Risky Bet

Draw & Total Goals - Under 2.5 - 3.80*. Cyprus have already drawn 0-0 with Latvia and, despite having much the greater territorial advantage, were unable to score. If the hosts control the ball but run into finishing problems again, and the visitors don't open up too much after losing possession, a score of 0-0 or 1-1 could hold until the final whistle.

    🎯 Reliable Bet

Total Goals - Under 3.5 - 1.27*. Even if both sides score, the bet still has margin to spare: it takes at least four goals for it to lose. Both teams are playing their third match in a short space of time, which could also affect the tempo in the second half.

    🚀 Player Statistics Bet

Eduard Spertsyan to have 1 or more shots on target. The midfielder remains one of Armenia's key attacking players and has already scored in the current Nations League campaign. Against Montenegro, Spertsyan converted his chance in the 65th minute, and Armenia registered four shots on target in that match overall. Given his expected role in build-up play and set pieces, at least one shot on target looks a reasonable expectation. The odds are 1.52*.

👀 If the match doesn't go to plan

If the score is still 0-0 at the 60-minute mark and Cyprus continue to create chances and regularly get the ball into the box, it's worth considering Total Goals - Over 0.5 in the second half in-play. This option becomes particularly interesting if the high volume of shots and corners is maintained: Cyprus already showed against Latvia that they can sustain pressure on their opponents for long periods, while Armenia, if they need a result, will be forced to push forward and leave more space. In that scenario, a single late goal could decide the match.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Prediction

Cyprus have only picked up one point so far, but their match against Latvia showed the team are capable of creating a decent number of chances. The problem has been finishing, and now the hosts will also have to reorganise their defence due to the suspensions of Tsaroulla and Sotiriou. Armenia look sharper in attack, though after two rounds they too have accumulated significant personnel problems at the back.

The match therefore doesn't look like one with a clear advantage for either side. Cyprus will be at home and will surely look to replicate the pressure they showed in Latvia, while Armenia are capable of hitting back through Spertsyan and quick transitions.

The main bet is Both Teams to Score - Yes. That said, the high cost of a mistake may push both sides to be more cautious in the final third. Predicted score: 1-1.
