Portugal vs Croatia Prediction 2 July 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Portugal face Croatia in the Round of 32. Ronaldo and co surprisingly failed to win Group K, which means a tricky opponent right at the start of the knockouts. Croatia have medalled at the last two World Cups and will do everything to keep that run going. But that means an upset against one of the tournament favourites.

    Portugal Team Overview

Portugal's group stage was hard to read. Round one brought a surprise draw with DR Congo (1-1), which most put down to Roberto Martínez's side underestimating the opponent. That theory looked confirmed after a 5-0 demolition of Uzbekistan in round two. Then came a flat 0-0 against Colombia, where Portugal looked second-best for long stretches and never really took a risk. That match confirmed there's a real problem here. Ronaldo goes quiet against top sides. Bruno, Vitinha and Neves haven't found their chemistry. The wide players aren't giving the pace and dribbling everyone expected coming in.

Portugal are still among the favourites for the title - but plenty of questions remain heading into the knockouts. Against Croatia they'll likely need patient, possession-based football. If the midfield keeps recycling the ball sterile and slow, that's a problem. But if Martínez's midfield finds its level and starts cutting through with quick, short combinations, reaching the last 16 should be well within reach.

    Croatia Team Overview

Croatia's group stage opened with a defeat to England (2-4) - surprisingly entertaining for a team known for the opposite. After that they went back to what they know: grinding out results against Panama (1-0) and Ghana (2-1), enough for second place in Group L. Like Portugal, Dalić's side haven't been particularly impressive. This isn't the same team that won bronze in 2022 - the core players are older now, and the next generation isn't quite there yet.

Expect Croatia to play second fiddle here. They'll cede the ball to Portugal and look to catch them in transition. Their strength remains the midfield - Modrić, Kovačić, Pašalić. If those three have a good day, and Livaković returns to his best between the posts, Croatia have a real shot at stopping Ronaldo and company.

    Latest news

    Portugal

✅ According to reports, Roberto Martínez has his full World Cup squad available for the Round of 32.

🔁 Update as of July 2, 4:25 UTC:

    • Extreme heat is expected in Toronto on matchday. During the afternoon, the feels-like temperature could climb to 40°C, while the actual air temperature is forecast to reach 35°C. Although conditions should cool slightly before kickoff, temperatures are still expected to remain above 33°C. Such conditions are likely to affect the pace of the game, particularly for older players. Portugal may have a slight advantage in this regard, having played all three of their group-stage matches in hot weather. Croatia, by contrast, experienced similar conditions only once - during their defeat to England - while Luka Modrić and his teammates played their other two group matches in much milder temperatures of 22-24°C.

🔁 Update as of July 2, 17:30 UTC:

    • Portugal will enter the match on the first anniversary of Diogo Jota's passing, a date that is certain to carry emotional significance for the squad. Several players have previously spoken about their desire to honor his memory by achieving success at the tournament. While this should not be viewed as a direct factor in predicting the outcome of the match, there is little doubt that the occasion will provide Portugal with an added emotional motivation.

    Croatia

✅ No injury concerns for Croatia either. Expect Dalić's strongest available XI.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Predicted starting XI Portugal: Costa - Mendes, Veiga, Dias, Cancelo - Neves, Vitinha, Fernandes - Félix, Ronaldo, Neto

📋 Predicted starting XI Croatia: Livaković - Stanišić, Pongračić, Šutalo, Gvardiol - Modrić, Kovačić - Perišić, Baturina, Pašalić - Budimir

    🟨 Yellow Card Prediction

Norwegian referee Espen Andreas Eskås takes charge. He's averaged 3.6 yellow cards across his last 10 matches - a fairly restrained official who doesn't reach for cards without good reason. Worth noting: Croatia have stayed under 1.5 yellow cards in 10 of their last 11 matches. They're not a rough side by any stretch, which makes this line at 1.80* interesting.

    😱 Risky Bet

Portugal and Croatia are at a similar level right now - strong in attack, vulnerable at the back. That combination opens the door to a Both Teams To Score (Yes) and draw in normal time. It's a risky pick, but 4.35* reflects the real chance of that outcome between two closely matched sides.

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

The bookmakers price Croatia to score at 1.62*, and it looks like good value. Modrić and co have found the net in 10 of their last 11 matches, and at this World Cup they haven't gone a single game without scoring. Add in Portugal's shaky defensive record against above-average opposition, and this is the bet worth considering.

    🚀 Player Stat Bet

Ronaldo keeps playing on the shoulder of the last defender, hunting for gaps. Against a tactically sharp side like Croatia, expect offside traps designed specifically to limit his space. With his pace and finishing instincts not quite what they were, Ronaldo total offsides over 1.5 at 2.20* looks like a strong option.

    🚩 Corner Prediction

Both sides like to attack down the flanks, which naturally produces plenty of crosses and clearances out of play. Total corners over 7.5 at 1.53* should come through without much trouble - that line has landed in 8 of Croatia's last 9 matches. With Portugal needing to find ways through a well-organised defence and likely to test Livaković often, we'll follow the trend.

    🎯 Safe Bet

Portugal's recent World Cup numbers show they rarely overload on corners - fewer than seven in 7 of their last 8 matches. Croatia defend compactly and won't let Portugal constantly pump the ball into the box from wide. Portugal individual total corners under 7.5 at 1.24* is our safe pick.

👀 If the Match Doesn't Go as Planned

If Portugal find their rhythm in normal time, the quality of their midfield - Fernandes especially - could leave Croatia with no answer. In that scenario Croatia might crack and be forced to open up, exposing themselves further. Portugal to win with a -1.5 handicap at 3.37* comes into play here.

*Odds are approximate and may vary across different bookmakers.

    Editors’ Prediction

We expect goals from this one. Portugal have one of the best midfields in the world, and it's about time they started creating for Ronaldo and the rest of the attack. Croatia, meanwhile, know exactly how to find gaps in defences and have done it consistently throughout this tournament. We think this opens up. Both Teams To Score (Yes) looks like the logical call. A 2-2 after 90 minutes wouldn't surprise us.
