Barys Astana vs Sibir Novosibirsk Prediction 7 September 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Barys open their new campaign with a home stand, while Sibir have already kicked off their season with an official fixture. The Novosibirsk side picked up a point in Kazan, falling to Ak Bars only in a shootout, and now arrive in Astana with some early momentum. For the hosts, a strong start is crucial, especially after a disappointing preseason where wins were hard to come by. Adding to the intrigue is the head-to-head history-recent clashes between these teams have consistently gone beyond regulation time.

    Head-to-Head

📊 Last season, these teams faced off eight times, including two friendlies. The average total goals in those games was 4.25, so this matchup hasn't exactly been a high-scoring affair. But there's a more intriguing trend: more and more often, 60 minutes just isn't enough to separate these sides.

Four of their last five head-to-head clashes have gone all the way to a shootout. That stat underlines just how evenly matched Barys and Sibir are whenever they meet. Ahead of their latest showdown, this is particularly relevant, as neither the bookmakers nor our editorial team see a clear favorite here.

    Barys Astana Team Overview

Barys’ summer preparations have hardly inspired confidence, as the team managed just two wins in six outings. Even those victories were hard-fought: they edged Lada 2-1, and needed overtime to get past Admiral in a wild 6-5 contest. At the Puchkov Memorial Tournament, all three of Barys’ games went to extra time, and against SKA-VMF they converted only one of 34 shots on target. Heading into the regular season, the hosts still lack both stability and clinical finishing in front of goal.

Discipline is another concern. Barys picked up frequent penalties during their pre-season fixtures, and opponents made the most of those opportunities: SKA-VMF scored their goal on the power play, while Admiral struck three times with the man advantage. For their season opener, Mikhail Kravets’ side will be without Sarkenov and Shestakov, both sidelined with injuries. Meanwhile, the roster continues to evolve-Barys have signed defenseman Madi Dikhanbek to a two-year contract.

    Sibir Novosibirsk Team Overview

Sibir looked much sharper in attack this summer, especially during the Blinov Cup. At that tournament, Yaroslav Luzenkov’s side averaged 4.3 goals per game, with Semyon Koshelev emerging as the team’s top scorer, netting three times. That’s a stark contrast to last season, when the Novosibirsk club finished the regular campaign with just 160 goals and ranked among the lowest-scoring teams in the East. Their 4-0 win over Severstal particularly stood out, as Mikhail Berdin stopped all 21 shots he faced.

Their first official match of the season also demonstrated Sibir’s attacking potential. In Kazan, they led Ak Bars 3-1, with Evgeny Kuznetsov and Stepan Nikulin both scoring their debut goals for the club. However, Sibir couldn’t hold on to their advantage-the hosts equalised in the third period and then edged the shootout. Despite the defeat, Sibir claimed a point in Kazan and now head into the game in Astana with valuable match practice under their belt.

    ⚡️ Key Players

Barys are still guided by last season's stats. Mason Morelli featured in 61 games, tallying 36 points with 12 goals and 24 assists. Tyce Thompson added 25 points (15 goals, 10 assists) over 55 appearances, while Dinmukhamed Kaiyrzhan wrapped up the regular season with 21 points (8 goals, 13 assists) from 65 games.

Sibir's first leaders of the new campaign emerged in Kazan. Evgeny Kuznetsov, Stepan Nikulin, and Taylor Beck each found the net. For Kuznetsov, it marked his 100th career KHL goal, while Beck converted one of his three shots on target.

    🥅 Goaltenders

Last season, Andrei Shutov logged the most games between the pipes for Barys. He appeared in 34 contests, posting five wins, a .907 save percentage, and a goals-against average of 2.92. Nikita Boyarkin played 14 games, also recording five victories with a .903 save percentage and a 2.67 GAA. Both netminders recorded one shutout apiece.

Mikhail Berdin played the full game for Sibir in their opener. In Kazan, he stopped 21 of 24 shots for an .875 save percentage and finished with a 2.77 goals-against average. Despite conceding three times in regulation, Sibir managed to hold the tie through to the shootout.

    ⭐️ Editor’s Prediction

There’s no clear favourite heading into this one, but Sibir appear to have a slight edge based on recent form. Barys have managed just two wins from their six preseason outings, while the Novosibirsk side have picked up four victories in seven matches. On top of that, Luzhennkov’s team have already played an official fixture this season, holding Ak Bars to a 3-3 draw in regulation.

There’s also a compelling head-to-head angle: Sibir haven’t lost to Barys in regulation across their last five meetings, and four of those games have gone all the way to a shootout. With so many tightly contested encounters between these sides, backing the visitors with a safety net looks like the smarter play than trying to pick a winner outright. My pick: Sibir double chance in regulation (X2).
