Northwoods League

The league started with five teams: Kenosha Kroakers, Manitowoc Skunks, Rochester Honkers, St. Cloud River Bats and Wausau Woodchucks. The league expanded to six teams in 1995 with the addition of Dubuque Mud Puppies, and to eight teams in 1996 with the addition of Brainerd Mighty Gulls and Waterloo Bucks. The league continued to grow over the years, reaching 16 teams in 2005, 18 teams in 2010, 20 teams in 2015 and 22 teams in 2018. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the league operated with a regionalized schedule and added four temporary teams: Minnesota Mud Puppies, Minot Hot Tots, Bismarck Larks and Thunder Bay Border Cats. In 2021, the league returned to its normal format and added a new permanent team: Green Bay Rockers.

The Northwoods League has been a launching pad for many successful MLB careers. Some of the notable alumni include:

  • Max Scherzer: A three-time Cy Young Award winner and a World Series champion with the Washington Nationals in 2019. He played for the La Crosse Loggers in 2004.
  • Chris Sale: A seven-time All-Star and a World Series champion with the Boston Red Sox in 2018. He played for the La Crosse Loggers in 2008.
  • Pete Alonso: The 2019 National League Rookie of the Year and a two-time Home Run Derby champion with the New York Mets. He played for the Madison Mallards in 2014 and 2015.
  • Marcus Semien: A 2021 All-Star, a MLB Gold Glove winner and a Second Team All-MLB shortstop with the Toronto Blue Jays. He played for the Alexandria Beetles in 2009.

Playing Style and Tactics

The playing style and tactics of the Northwoods League are similar to those of MLB, but with some differences. For example:

  • The league uses wooden bats instead of metal bats, which are more common in college baseball. This makes hitting more challenging and rewards players who can make solid contact and drive the ball.
  • The league uses a designated hitter (DH) rule for both divisions, which allows teams to use a hitter who does not play defense instead of their pitcher. This increases offensive production and gives more opportunities for hitters to develop their skills.
  • The league uses an extra innings rule that applies to regular season games but not playoff games. The rule states that if a game is tied after nine innings, each half-inning thereafter will begin with a runner on second base and no outs. This creates more scoring chances and reduces the length of games.
  • The league imposes a pitch count limit for pitchers, which varies depending on their age and college affiliation. The limit ranges from 80 to 105 pitches per game, depending on the situation. This protects pitchers from overuse and injury and encourages them to be more efficient and effective.
