The Mexican League of Baseball (Liga Mexicana de Béisbol, LMB) has a rich and colorful history that spans almost a century. The league was founded on June 28, 1925, by Ernesto Carmona, a sportswriter who wanted to create a national baseball circuit that would rival the American leagues. The first season featured six teams: Mexico City Reds (Diablos Rojos del México), Mexico City Tigers (Tigres del México), Veracruz Blues (Azules de Veracruz), Puebla Parrots (Pericos de Puebla), San Luis Potosí Tunas (Tunas de San Luis Potosí), and Tampico Lightermen (Alijadores de Tampico). The Reds won the first championship by defeating the Tigers in a best-of-nine series.
The league expanded to eight teams in the 1960s and to 10 teams in 1970, when it was split into two divisions for the first time. In 1979, the league absorbed the Mexican Central League and grew to 20 teams in four divisions.
