What Is the UEFA Nations League and How Does the Tournament Work?
The Nations League is a competition for national teams under UEFA, first held in the 2018/2019 season. The main idea is to replace friendly matches with games that have real sporting motivation. The tournament is held every two years.
All 55 UEFA national teams are divided into three leagues — A, B and C — while League D was added from the third edition. Within each league, teams are split into groups. The group winners in League A reach the final stage ("Nations League Finals"), where the trophy is decided through semi-finals and a final. Teams finishing last are relegated to a lower league, while the best teams are promoted. The Nations League also offers a second chance to qualify for the European Championship through the playoffs.
The final stage usually takes place in one of the participating countries over several days: two semi-finals, a third-place match and the final.
