The favorite for the 2026/27 season is clear. Real Madrid reacted to last season's failure — when Los Blancos were eliminated in the playoff quarter-finals — with an extremely aggressive rebuild.

First, head coach Sergio Scariolo left his post and was replaced by Pedro Martinez, the very coach who won last season's championship with Valencia Basket. This was one of the most high-profile coaching appointments of the summer in European basketball.

One of the few positions where the club did no transfer work at all was point guard. Facundo Campazzo, Andres Feliz and Theo Maledon remain and give Pedro Martinez three different profiles for organizing the offense. This is fundamentally important: while Barcelona and Valencia are building a new hierarchy of playmakers from scratch, Real can continue working with an already established trio. The club also made sure to provide quality backups for big man Tavares by signing two players at once — the aforementioned Pradilla and Sarr. The Cape Verde star will no longer have to carry the workload alone, as happened last season amid injuries.

Sergio Llull, Alberto Abalde, Gabriele Procida, Gabi Deck and Chuma Okeke also remain with the team. This means the newcomers will not have to integrate into a completely unfamiliar structure — the core of role players and locker-room leaders remains in place, which is critically important for the speed of adaptation during the opening rounds.

A trophyless season is already a huge source of motivation for a club of this caliber. The management openly states that the goal is to compete for every trophy Madrid enters. Combined with a new championship-winning coach and a stronger roster, this creates a rare mix of the anger of last season's underachiever and the resources of a top club capable of delivering that response.
