Arthur Fery made a significant ranking jump after a surprise run to the semi-finals at home Wimbledon. The transition from grass to hard courts was not entirely smooth - he went out in the second round in Cincinnati. However, on his way to the Winston-Salem final he dropped just one set in total. It should be noted that in the semi-final he benefited from a leg injury to James Duckworth: the Australian retired in the second set with the score standing at 6-4, 1-2 in Fery's favour.

Fery is not a power player - hardly surprising given his modest height of 175 cm. That said, his serve alone is enough to hold around 80% of his service games. In the rallies, he earns points through exceptional work rate, covering the full width of the baseline and retrieving balls that look out of reach. The world No. 37 is no one-trick defender either, moving opponents around with angled groundstrokes and striking back with sharp counter-attacks, including off his two-handed backhand.

Ignacio Buse broke into the upper echelons of men's tennis before Fery, and in May claimed his first ATP Tour title on clay at the Hamburg 500. That makes his run to the final in Winston-Salem all the more surprising - three of his four matches here have gone to three sets, and his hard-court record this season coming in was a negative 2-4. He had also yet to win a main-draw ATP match on hard courts before this tournament.

Buse's game is a contrast to his upcoming opponent's. Despite standing eight centimetres taller than the Briton, he holds serve only a little above 70%. There are differences at the back of the court too: Buse is more measured from the baseline, favouring extended rallies over counter-attacking. He is extremely difficult to pass outright - on return he drops well behind the baseline, giving himself extra time to get the ball back in play and steer points into long, grinding exchanges.
