Maria had to show some fight on home soil - and she did. Hard to find much fault with her game: three wins, no sets dropped. Polina Kudemetova, Harriet Dart, and Alicia Parks all went home early. Parks was expected to push her. It didn't happen.

The Russian will improve on her No. 90 ranking - and she deserves to be higher. Good form after Wimbledon has carried into Athens. Wins over Aoi Ito, Ann Li, and Tereza Valentová. The last two, in particular, are quality results.
The quarterfinal against Valentová looked like a potential problem, but what followed was strong baseline play and a straight-sets win. Not brilliant statistically - but Korneeva ground through the rallies. First-serve percentage sat at 57%, with 62% of points won behind it.
