Ulinzi Stars has a special place in Kenyan football because its players represent the country's armed forces. The club was formed in 1995 through a merger of football teams from different branches of the military. Its nickname, the Soldiers, reflects this background and separates Ulinzi from most civilian clubs in Kenya. The team later established its base in Nakuru, where Afraha Stadium hosted many of its home matches.
Ulinzi Stars quickly developed into one of Kenya's most successful football teams during the early 2000s. The Soldiers won three consecutive national championships in 2003, 2004 and 2005, an impressive achievement in domestic football. Another league title followed in 2010 under coach Benjamin Nyangweso, who led the club through a successful campaign. The team also earned recognition as Kenya's Sports Team of the Year after that fourth championship.
Several other achievements deserve attention in Ulinzi Stars' history:
- In 2011, the Soldiers won the inaugural KPL Top 8 Cup after a victory over Western Stima.
- Ulinzi reached another Top 8 final in 2012 but finished as runners-up behind Gor Mahia.
- The club also represented Kenya in international military football competitions, including the 2011 Military World Games.
Ulinzi Stars continued to challenge for league honours after its last championship, with several strong campaigns in later seasons. The team finished second in the Kenyan Premier League in 2011, 2014, 2015 and 2016. Its military background remains central to the club's identity, alongside its long history in national football. Ulinzi has also represented Kenya in African club competitions against opponents from other countries.
