Salzburg vs Mjallby Prediction 27 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Mjällby held on in Hellevik until the first minute of stoppage time, when defender Tom Pettersson turned the ball into his own net. Salzburg now only need a draw, while the losers will drop into the Europa Conference League group stage. The second leg of the Europa League qualifying play-off takes place on 27 August at the Red Bull Arena in Wals-Siezenheim.

    Head-to-Head

📊 These two sides only met for the first time last week, and it was a scrappy affair. Salzburg spent the first half on the front foot, but Robin Wallinder kept out everything that came his way. After the break, the hosts took control: Pettersson headed against the crossbar, and Jakob Bergström also had his chance. Neither side managed to score from open play, and Salzburg's 1-0 win came courtesy of an opposition error.

    RB Salzburg Team Overview

Salzburg won ten consecutive Austrian championships, but have not lifted a trophy since 2023. They finished third last season and went through two managers along the way - parting with Thomas Letsch in February and Daniel Beichler in May. Danny Röhl has been in charge since 17 June, signed on a contract until 2029. The 37-year-old German arrived from Rangers, having previously managed Sheffield Wednesday and worked as an assistant to Hansi Flick at Bayern and with the Germany national team.

In the new Bundesliga season, Salzburg have made a solid start: seven points from three matches and just one goal conceded. Their path to the playoff was nervy - they were two goals down against Pafos in Cyprus before Haris Tabakovic scored a hat-trick in 17 minutes. That said, Salzburg have not scored more than three goals at home in any of their last 14 matches.

    Mjallby AIF Team Overview

Mjällby are a club from the coastal town of Hällevik who won the Swedish title for the first time in 2025, setting a new league points record in the process with 75. Anders Torstensson moved upstairs to a technical director role after that season, and since November the club have been managed by Norwegian coach Karl Marius Åsum. Under him, Mjällby have added a second trophy in seven months - they won the Swedish Cup on 14 May.

In Allsvenskan, though, the champions have struggled: just 20 points from 16 matches. In Europe they lasted longer than expected - Slovan knocked them out of the Champions League, but the drop-down gave them a shot at the Europa League qualifying rounds. In mid-August, Åsum's side were three goals down at half-time against the league leaders before coming back to beat Sirius 4-3. Away from home, however, the picture is different: Mjällby have conceded in each of their last seven away matches.

    Latest news

    RB Salzburg

❗️ The hosts are dealing with a fairly lengthy injury list: Soumaila Diabaté, Gaoussou Diakité and Frans Krätzig are all ruled out of the second leg, while Johannes Moser has an adductor problem. Enrique Aguilar, who fractured his forearm in the match against Pafos, has returned to partial training with the squad. In the summer, the club sold Lucas Gourna-Douath to Hull City and Aleksa Terzić to Frosinone, bringing in Umut Tohumcu as a replacement. The schedule has also worked in Salzburg's favour: with the UEFA Super Cup taking up their stadium, the home match against Rapid was postponed, meaning the team finally get to play at home after four consecutive away fixtures.

    Mjallby AIF

❌ Mjällby reported no absentees ahead of the trip to Austria. Over the summer, the club strengthened their squad for three competitions: 22-year-old Danish midfielder Mads Enggård arrived from Molde, and 19-year-old Villum Dalsgård joined from Nordsjælland. They also signed 19-year-old defender Victor Sandberg, though he is seeing out the season at Örebro and will not be available in Salzburg. The Swedes are guaranteed a place in the league phase of the Conference League regardless of the result, and they also have two games in hand in Allsvenskan.

    Predicted Lineups

📋 Predicted starting XI - Salzburg: Zawieschitzky - Veratschnig, Boma, Zabransky, Schmid - Mazurek, Barry - Baidoo, Vertessen, Redzic - Tabakovic

📋 Predicted starting XI - Mjällby: Wallinder - Miettinen, Iqbal, Pettersson, Nielsen - Kjær, Gustavsson, Gustafson, Lindberg - Samuelsen, Bergström

    ⚽️ Goals Prediction

Neither side has any reason to sit back: a goal settles things for Salzburg, while Mjällby simply cannot go through without scoring. The hosts have found the net in 15 of their last 16 matches, and there is no reason to expect that to change. The visitors tell a similar story away from home - they have both scored and conceded in 6 of their last 7 away matches. Goals at both ends look likely. The pick is Both Teams to Score - Yes at 2.10*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Salzburg have a pronounced corner imbalance: across their last ten official matches, they have averaged 8.2 corners per game, nearly three times as many as their opponents at 3.2. Mjällby concede a similar volume - opponents have averaged 4.4 corners against them. The Swedes will be defending and clearing, and every clearance out wide tends to come back as a corner. The pick is Salzburg Team Total Corners - Over 4.5.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The two sides foul at different rates. Salzburg have picked up at least one yellow card in each of their last ten official matches, while their opponents have averaged two. The match will be refereed by Bosnian official Irfan Peljto, who is liberal with his bookings - he has averaged 4.3 yellow cards per 90 minutes across his last ten matches. The pick is Total Yellow Cards - Over 2.5.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across bookmakers.

    ⭐️ Editor's Pick

Salzburg are unbeaten in their last seven matches, and this run has been far from high-scoring: in 11 of their last 12 home games, the two sides combined for fewer than five goals. Right now, the hosts are more focused on getting the right result than putting up big numbers.

Mjällby's figures point in the same direction: in 9 of their last 10 matches, the combined total has been under four goals. They will look to get back into the tie carefully, without opening up the game, and a fourth goal looks surplus to requirements for either side. The bet is Total Goals - Under 3.5. Predicted score: 2-1.
