    Spartak Moscow Team Overview

Spartak started last season under Dejan Stanković and went into the winter break sitting in the top six. The board weren't satisfied with that, though, and in January they brought in Juan Carlos Carcedo - former assistant to Unai Emery, including during his time at Spartak, and most recently head coach of Cypriot side Pafos. It turned out to be the right call: under the Spaniard, Spartak climbed into the top four and won the Russian Cup.

Pre-season was a mixed picture. On the positive side, they finished with two wins, a draw and a defeat. On the other hand, they didn't beat a single side from last season's top eight. Their first competitive match of the new campaign was the Super Cup against Zenit. It was an open game, and Spartak led by a single goal all the way to the 95th minute - until VAR spotted a handball by one of their defenders. Zenit levelled from the spot and went on to win the penalty shootout.

    Rodina Moscow Team Overview

Rodina spent 11 years working their way up from amateur football to the RPL, with four of those years spent hovering in the upper half of the First League table. The breakthrough came last season under Spanish coach Juan Díaz - a product of Sevilla's setup. He took over the Moscow club in winter, when they were sitting third, and steered them to the title. The biggest win for Rodina this summer was the automatic contract extension for Díaz, which had been written into his deal as a promotion clause.

The summer pre-season wasn't a disaster, but Rodina didn't manage a single win. It started with two RPL sides - Lokomotiv (0-0) and Akron (0-5). The heavy defeat to the Togliatti club is hard to read into, though - the match was held behind closed doors, so the format and lineups remain unclear. In the final two games, against Spartak Subotica and Maccabi Petah Tikva, the Moscow side finally started scoring, even if they still couldn't win - 2-2 and 3-3 respectively.

    Latest news

    Spartak Moscow

✅ Spartak are moving on from unwanted assets - Theo Bongonda and a few youngsters heading out on loan. No other losses beyond those transfers. On the incoming side, there's defender Victor Parada, signed from Spanish club Alaves for €5 million.

    Rodina Moscow

✅ Rodina have largely kept their title-winning squad together ahead of the RPL season, letting go of a few players who couldn't get regular minutes even in the First League. The headline signing is midfielder Iker Pozo - picked up from Croatian side Gorica for €1 million - a player who came through the academies of Real Madrid and Manchester City.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

Even with the season just getting started, this match looks set to be a physical one. For starters, it's a new Moscow derby - that alone guarantees intensity. On top of that, Rodina are a former First League side, and that division runs on duels. Juan Díaz has bought into that style, and in the final stretch of last season his team picked up at least two yellow cards in 5 of their last 6 matches.

Spartak have the same record, actually - over an even longer run: 6 of their last 7. The fact that both managers are Spanish adds another layer of rivalry. Everything points to a heated match, which makes total yellow cards over 3.5 worth a look at 1.7*.

    🎯 Safe Bet

Finding a genuinely reliable bet when two teams are this far apart in quality isn't easy. The odds on most markets are too stretched, so let's go back to how these sides actually play - Rodina in particular.

No question the younger side will throw everything at this derby. If not through combination play, then through sheer physicality - Díaz's team will fight for every ball. Spartak aren't exactly soft either, but they're more disciplined. Playing it slightly safe, the bet here is Rodina not to lose on yellow cards at 1.28*.

    😱 Risky Bet

Based on their head-to-head history with Spartak and their pre-season results, Rodina can hold their own against teams of a broadly European level. They also finished last season as the top scorers in the First League, which says something about their attacking threat. This match could well produce goals - but with the hosts firmly in control. A reasonable bet for that scenario: Both Teams To Score (Yes) and Spartak to win with a -2 handicap at 3.72*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Spartak have moved away from the free-scoring, attack-at-all-costs approach and become a fairly pragmatic side. Aside from a few matches after the winter break, the Red and Whites haven't been throwing themselves forward or camping around the opposition box. That shows up in the corner stats too - they've taken no more than seven corners in each of their last five matches. That's the angle here. Our prediction: Spartak total corners under 6.5, available at 1.86*.

    ⚽️ Goals Prediction

Sticking with the style Juan Carlos Carcedo has instilled at the club - it's worth looking at the scoring side of things too. Most of Spartak's wins have come by the narrowest of margins, and they rarely clear a -1.5 handicap.

Rodina, meanwhile, aren't the most defensively solid side around, but they're disciplined enough - at least by First League standards, where they finished in the top three defensively with 28 goals conceded in 34 rounds. Put it all together and the bet is Spartak total goals under 2.5. That line came in during five of their last home matches in the RPL, and it's currently available at 1.79*.

    🚀 Player Stats Bet

Last season, Pablo Solari was Spartak's top scorer with 11 goals across all competitions. But he's not just about his own numbers - he also led the team in assists with eight. He didn't get any minutes in the Super Cup, but against a lower-profile side like Rodina he could well feature, and the rest takes care of itself. The bet: Solari to score or assist at 1.65*.

👀 If the Match Goes Off-Script

Spartak will almost certainly take control from the first whistle. But they can't afford to switch off - Rodina have a habit of scoring in the first half, including away from home, which they did in 6 of their last 7 matches. The hosts aren't far behind on that stat either, with a similar record at home. If the visitors manage to strike early, Spartak will push to respond, which could open the game up. That makes first-half total goals over 1.5 interesting at 2.21*.

*Odds are approximate and may vary across bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Prediction

Based on what we've laid out above, both teams played a similar brand of football last season, just at different levels. Not surprising, given that since January both sides have been managed by Spanish coaches with decent track records. That's why we wouldn't write off Rodina so easily. The club is well-funded, kept the core that won them the title, made some targeted additions, and finished the preseason on a decent note, starting to find the net against European opposition.

Generally speaking, goals at Lukoil Arena are nothing new: both teams scored in six straight matches involving Spartak. We're buying into the Moscow derby magic here and going with a scenario that might not be the most spectacular, but should see both sides get on the scoresheet. Editor's Prediction: Both Teams To Score: Yes. We'll give the edge to the higher-profile hosts (2:1).
