Slovan Bratislava vs Celje Prediction 19 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Slovan Bratislava and Celje will meet again in the Champions League qualifying two years after their previous meeting, in which the Slovaks thrashed their opponents. This time the match takes place in the qualifying play-off, with a spot in the main stage of Europe's most prestigious club competition on the line. Revenge or a repeat of history? The answer comes in the next match.

    Head-to-Head

📊 Slovan and Celje met twice in the 2024/25 Champions League qualifying. The first match in Slovenia ended 1:1. Celje looked more active in attack, taking 21 shots to their opponents' 7, but after a Slovan player was sent off they were unable to break down the visitors.

In the return leg in Bratislava, everything was decided by an early red card, this time for a Celje player. Slovan took advantage of the numerical superiority and thrashed their opponents 5:0. Across the two matches, the Slovaks went through with an aggregate score of 6:1.

    Slovan Bratislava Team Overview

Under the guidance of the legendary Yaya Touré, for whom this is his first full coaching experience, the team looks confident. The club comes into this tie in good European form. After winning in Sweden against Mjällby (2:1), the Slovaks were even more assured at home, winning 2:0 and securing progress to the next round with an aggregate score of 4:1.

The club did not significantly reshape their squad in the summer. Among the new arrivals, goalkeeper Aleksandar Popović, who joined from DAC 1904, and left back Samuel Kozłowski from Polish side Widzew stand out. Another interesting signing was 19-year-old Kristian Martinez from Israeli club Ironi Kiryat Shmona.

In terms of their play, the Slovaks currently look fairly pragmatic. The team tries to control the match, does not force things unnecessarily, and feels particularly comfortable when they get space after winning the ball back. Their defensive solidity allows Slovan to enter the play-off round as the favourites in the tie.

    Celje Team Overview

The Slovenian champions had a difficult path through qualifying. In the second leg against Ararat-Armenia they won at home (2:0) - Dukuli and Verbič scored on the 83rd and 85th minutes, turning the tie around.

Before that, Celje had a very hard time getting past Egnatia. In the first match in Albania the teams produced a goal fest and drew 3:3. The second leg in Slovenia also ended in a draw (2:2). With the aggregate score level at 5:5, everything was decided by a penalty shootout, where the Slovenians came out on top - 4:1.

The squad received several interesting additions over the summer. The headline one was the return of Benjamin Verbič - the experienced Slovenian winger is back at his home club after 11 years abroad. Another notable new signing is Yaya Dukuli, who joined from Adelaide United. He has already made his mark with an important goal in European competition.

In terms of their style of play, Celje look bolder than many teams who travel away as underdogs. The Slovenians try not simply to defend but to hit back with their own attacks, especially after winning the ball back. In attack, Svit Sešlar and Armandas Kučys are worth highlighting, while the arrival of Verbič adds individual quality on the flank.

    ⚽️ Goals prediction

Slovan scored 7 goals in four qualifying matches. The team has also scored in 14 of their last 15 official matches. Celje have an even more impressive run: the Slovenians have scored in 19 consecutive matches across all competitions and found the net in each of their last eight away games. In qualifying, the team scored in three of four matches, including twice away from home.

Slovan will take the initiative at home, but their attacking activity may leave space for Celje's counter-attacks. The visitors have enough going forward to score a goal of their own. We expect to see goals at both ends, and our pick is: both teams to score (yes) at odds of 1.75*.

    🚩 Corners prediction

Slovan come into the match with a good trend: no more than nine corners were taken in five consecutive matches. At the same time, in the first leg of the qualifying play-off, the Slovaks are unlikely to push the pace, while Celje can play compactly and focus on counter-attacks. Prediction: total under 9.5 corners at 1.90*.

    🟨 Yellow cards prediction

Celje regularly pick up a high number of bookings in European matches. In the second leg against Ararat-Armenia, the Slovenians received five yellow cards; in the previous match against Egnatia - four. Given the nature of a first-leg play-off match and the high intensity of the off-the-ball battle, Celje could pick up at least one booking again. Prediction: Celje total yellow cards over 0.5.

*Odds are indicative and may vary depending on the bookmaker.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

Slovan look like favourites not only because of home advantage. The Slovaks have already come through two qualifying rounds, putting in confident home performances against Iberia and Mjällby. After all, they have fresh experience of matches like this. Celje are dangerous on the counter, but away from home they will have to withstand the pressure of the hosts.

That said, there is no reason to expect a repeat of the 5:0 thrashing from the previous meeting between the sides in Bratislava. Celje have become a more experienced European outfit, and the cost of a mistake in the first play-off leg is significantly higher. We go with a Slovan win. Predicted score - 2:1.
