Sao Paulo vs Bolivar Prediction 19 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 São Paulo and Bolívar will determine who advances to the quarterfinals of the Copa Sudamericana after a 1:1 draw in La Paz. The Bolivians were only able to make use of the altitude advantage in the second half and equalized after Roberto Arboleda's goal, so the tie is now effectively starting from scratch. São Paulo's main advantage is a home match at MorumBIS, but the team's current form calls for some caution about their status as favourites.

    Head-to-Head

📊 In the first leg of the round of 16, Bolívar drew 1-1 with São Paulo at home. The Bolivians conceded first, but managed to level after the break. Heading into the second leg in São Paulo, the two teams are level: the winner of the second match will advance to the quarter-finals, where they will meet the winner of the Deportes Recoleta - Boca Juniors tie.

    Sao Paulo Team Overview

The main problem for Dorival Júnior's side ahead of the second leg is not the result of the first match, but their overall form. Since club football resumed after the break, São Paulo have been unable to stabilize their results. In their last six matches they have drawn three times and lost three times. In the Brazilian championship their winless run has reached nine matches, and after 23 rounds the team sit 13th.

Their last match before the decisive game against Bolívar was a home meeting with Coritiba. São Paulo opened the scoring through Pablo Maia, but after the break they conceded from a set piece and lost their lead again - 1:1. The team had territorial dominance and created enough chances to win, but once again ran into problems with finishing.

That very aspect could prove decisive against Bolívar. In the first match, the Tricolor made almost perfect use of one of their few moments: Iago delivered a corner, Robert Arboleda won the aerial duel and opened the scoring. For the most part, though, the team spent the match defending and managing the physical load at around 3,650 metres above sea level.

Now the circumstances change completely. São Paulo return to MorumBIS, where until last weekend the team had not played for 81 days due to other events being held at the stadium. The return did not go well, but home ground remains a serious advantage over Bolívar.

    Club Bolivar Team Overview

The draw can be considered a poor result for the Bolivians. At altitude in La Paz, the team tried to make maximum use of the flanks and crosses, regularly loading São Paulo's penalty area. It was after one such episode in the second half that Melgar's goal came about: Domingos Duarte failed to deal with a cross, and the Bolívar midfielder was first to the rebound. The team kept the tie alive, and now they travel to Brazil, where the conditions will be fundamentally different. At home, Bolívar can make far greater use of the altitude and tempo, whereas on level ground their advantage shrinks sharply.

Bolívar were in good form heading into this series. Alejandro Restrepo's team knocked out Grêmio in the previous round, beating the Brazilians in the second leg in Porto Alegre 1-0 and winning the tie on aggregate (4-2). In the Bolivian championship, the club continue to pick up points: last weekend they thrashed Blooming - Bullo Bullo (4-1) at home.

There is also a personnel issue. Bolívar will be without captain Leonel Justiniano for the second leg against São Paulo - he was sent off in the second leg against Grêmio and received a suspension. This is a notable loss for the midfield. Justiniano is responsible not only for ball-winning but also for the team's balance, so in Brazil Bolívar will need to be especially careful about the space in front of their penalty area.

That said, the team still has enough resources in attack. Dorny Romero, Dairon Asprilla and Martín Cauteruccio are capable of causing problems on the counter-attack, especially if São Paulo are forced to open up.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The first match was quite intense: São Paulo spent most of the time defending and picked up two bookings, while Bolívar constantly tried to speed up play through the flanks. Now the situation will change - the hosts should take the initiative, and the visitors will have to spend a lot of time without the ball.

It is especially important for Bolívar not to concede early fouls near their own penalty area. São Paulo will actively look for space between the lines, as well as use the flanks and set pieces. Given the importance of the match and the level scoreline after the first leg, I expect a high number of tactical fouls in the second half. Prediction: total yellow cards over 3.5.

    ⚽ Total Goals Prediction

Altitude was one of the most important factors in the first match, and in São Paulo the Bolivians will not have that advantage. At the same time, Junior's side are themselves in a difficult situation in front of goal: in 10 of their last 11 matches, the Tricolor have failed to score more than once. The team creates chances but regularly squanders their advantage. In the match against Coritiba, the hosts scored first again and again failed to see the game out to a win.

That is why I expect a more cautious start from São Paulo. The Brazilians only need a win by any scoreline, and a draw would send the tie to a penalty shootout. Bolívar also have no need to open up from the first minutes. The first goal could completely change the structure of the match. If São Paulo score first, Bolívar will have to push forward, and that will give the hosts space for a second goal. If the Brazilians take a long time to break down the defence, the match could well remain "low-scoring". Prediction: total goals under 3.5 at odds of 1.43*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

In La Paz, Bolívar made active use of the flanks and deliveries - earning eight corners as a result - but in the return leg it is São Paulo who should hold the initiative. The hosts will attack in a more positional manner and look to load the penalty area through their wide players.

Bolívar's style is also worth considering separately: the team will not constantly sit deep and will look to break on the counter at every opportunity. This creates the conditions for a mutual exchange of attacks and several corners from each side. In 10 of their last 11 matches, Restrepo's side have earned more than three corners per game. I will therefore go with Bolívar individual total corners over 3.5 at 1.67*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary depending on the bookmaker.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

A 1-1 draw in the first leg leaves both teams with a good chance of going through, but São Paulo hold the advantage heading into the second match. The main reason is the change of conditions: after a tough trip to La Paz, the Brazilians return home, while Bolívar will have to play without one of their key central midfielders - Leonel Justiniano.

That said, São Paulo are in a serious run of poor form: they have not won in six matches in a row, conceding in 11 of their last 12 games. The most logical option looks like a bet on a Bolívar goal - they have scored in 13 of their last 14 matches. The Brazilians should have the better of the play and create more chances, but Bolívar are capable of keeping things interesting for long enough. Predicted result: São Paulo win 2-1.
