Fluminense are having a fairly strong championship and after 22 rounds sit fourth with 35 points. The team are only two points ahead of fifth-placed Cruzeiro, but at the same time trail the top three significantly: Atletico Paranaense are in third place already five points clear. So the home match against Palmeiras is a good chance to close the gap on their rivals and at the same time test themselves against the league leader.

In the previous round, Fluminense drew 1-1 with Botafogo. The team conceded before the break but after the interval managed to equalise through Ignacio. For Luis Zubeldía's side it was already the fifth draw in their last five league rounds, and every one of those matches produced an under result.

The main argument in favour of Fluminense is their home form. Zubeldía's team are traditionally very strong at Maracanã. Back in the spring, the Brazilian Football Confederation noted that Fluminense had gone 22 home matches without defeat, and in the league at that point had a 14-match unbeaten run on their own ground.

But now the hosts will have to account for the physical load. On Tuesday, Fluminense played the first leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16 against Independiente Rivadavia. The match ended 0-0, so the team got neither a result nor an emotional boost ahead of a crucial league match. On top of that, Zubeldía will need to manage his squad carefully, as the return leg in Argentina is coming up very soon.

Another factor is the attack. Fluminense have fairly quality players in the forward line, but in recent matches the team have not been showing high scoring output. The match against Palmeiras will demand much more efficient finishing, as the visitors rarely allow opponents to create a large number of goalscoring situations.

Palmeiras remain top of Série A with 48 points after 22 rounds. They are six points ahead of Flamengo and eight clear of Athletico Paranaense. The lead is no accident: Palmeiras have been consistently picking up points and have one of the deepest squads in the league.

However, in recent rounds Abel Ferreira's side have had a minor problem - scoring. In the previous round, Palmeiras drew 0-0 at home with Internacional. The hosts had possession and territorial control but could not break down the opposition's defence.

The fixture list is an even more important factor. On Wednesday, Palmeiras hosted Cerro Porteño in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores round of 16. The team conceded a deeply unfortunate own goal deep into stoppage time and finished the match 1-1. Now they face a trip to Fluminense, followed by the return leg against the Paraguayans.

Rotation from Abel Ferreira cannot be ruled out. On one hand, Palmeiras' lead in the league means the manager does not need to take maximum risks. On the other, Fluminense are a direct rival in the upper part of the table, and dropping points in Rio could cut the gap to Flamengo and make the title race more complicated.

In the first half of the season, Palmeiras already showed how they can beat Fluminense. They made good use of quick transitions, scored twice early in the match and then held firm under pressure. Repeating that scenario will be harder now: Fluminense are at home and will surely look to take the initiative from the first minutes.
