Arsenal vs Man City Prediction 16 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 Cardiff is hosting the Community Shield for the first time in two decades, and this match marks the beginning of a new era in English football. After ten years of Pep Guardiola's dominance at the helm of Manchester City, Enzo Maresca has taken his place, and the Italian's first official match will be this very game. His opponent, Mikel Arteta, feels right at home in this tournament - he has already won the Community Shield three times. Both teams come into the match with serious injury concerns, which makes the pre-match picture particularly complicated. Let's break it down!

    Head-to-Head

📊 The head-to-head history in this tournament is entirely on Arsenal's side. In three previous Community Shield matches, the Londoners have consistently beaten City: in 1934 (4:0), 2014 (3:0) and 2023 (4:1 on penalties). As for last season, Mikel Arteta won the title race in the Premier League to Pep Guardiola, but failed to beat him in any of their three meetings, including the League Cup final in March (0:2).

    Arsenal Team Overview

Arsenal go into their first competitive match after a highly inconsistent pre-season. Arteta's side began their preparations with a heavy win over Girona (4:1), but then came defeats to Betis (1:3) and Borussia Dortmund (2:3). In their final friendly, the Londoners drew with Como (1:1), winning only on penalties. The quality of their play has clearly left a lot to be desired.

The defending champions' defence is a particular concern: the team have been conceding far more than usual. The absence of William Saliba, who will be out for a long time with a back injury, is making itself felt. The Gunners are expected to make an attempt to sign a centre-back. Although they have already spent very significantly this summer: transfers of Bruno Guimaraes, Christos Tzolis and Piero Incapie came to a combined €176.5 million. Meanwhile, Leandro Trossard - one of the key attacking players of recent seasons - has left for Turkey.

    Manchester City Team Overview

Enzo Maresca faced the same problem as Arteta: his key players only started training after the World Cup. Nevertheless, Manchester City played three matches on their Asian tour without losing in regular time, going out to Inter only on penalties. K-League All-Stars and Atlético Madrid were both beaten 3-1. Antoine Semenyo was particularly impressive, registering assists in all three matches.

We mentioned that the Gunners spent heavily in the transfer window, but City match them in that regard, having paid a combined €177.2m for new signings. However, the bulk of that sum - namely €135m - went on Elliot Anderson alone. All the other additions are investments for the future. So the difference on the pitch will have to be made by the old guard, but now without Nathan Aké, John Stones, Bernardo Silva and, likely, Tijjani Reijnders.

    Latest news

    Arsenal

❌ Alongside William Saliba, Jurrien Timber will also miss out, as he is recovering from groin surgery. Christian Mosquera is likely to partner Gabriel in the centre of defence.

❓ However, the injury situation is gradually improving. Key players who missed pre-season due to their involvement in the World Cup are returning. Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Martin Zubimendi have been training since Friday and, according to the manager, will be available. However, their starting is unlikely due to a lack of match practice. New signing Bruno Guimarães could make his first start.

    Manchester City

🚫 Rodri will not play as he is recovering from back surgery. This is the only absence, but an extremely significant one.

❔ Erling Haaland, who reached the World Cup quarter-finals with Norway, is training and fit, but is unlikely to be ready to start. In attack, those who had a full pre-season are most likely to start: Omar Marmoush, Phil Foden, Savinho and Antoine Semenyo.

    Predicted Line-ups

📋 Arsenal predicted starting line-up: Raya - White, Mosquera, Gabriel, Khayre - Guimarães, Lewis-Skelly, Ødegaard - Tzolis, Havertz, Madueke

📋 Manchester City predicted starting line-up: Donnarumma - Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, Ait-Nouri - Kovačić, González - Semenyo, Foden, Doku - Marmoush

    ⚽ Goals Prediction

Despite the attacking potential of both sides, the pre-season nature of the match and injury concerns make it potentially low-scoring. In 5 of the last 7 Community Shield matches, the winning team scored just one goal. Against this backdrop, the bet looks appealing - Arsenal individual total under 1.5 goals at odds of 1.60*. The arguments are straightforward: the Londoners were unimpressive during pre-season and, on top of that, failed to score more than one goal in 14 of their last 16 meetings with Manchester City.

    🟨 Yellow Cards Prediction

The referee appointed for the Community Shield is Samuel Barrott. Last Premier League season he averaged 3.63 bookings per game, and at the start of the current campaign he took charge of two European qualification matches, showing four yellow cards in each. In 4 of the 5 previous meetings between Arsenal and City, referees produced at least three yellow cards, and in the last Community Shield between these two giants there were as many as five bookings. The teams will press high, make mistakes and correct those mistakes with fouls, which should lead to the total over 2.5 yellow cards landing at 1.44*.

    🚩 Corners Prediction

Arsenal and corners - it's a great love story that has lodged itself in the minds of football fans. But let's look at the statistics. Mikel Arteta's side have taken fewer than 5.5 corners in 14 of their last 15 meetings with the Citizens and in seven consecutive official matches. The trends are more than convincing, especially given that at the start of the season the Londoners will clearly lack the intensity to generate a steady stream of set-piece deliveries. The odds on this market are 1.54*.

    😱 Risky Bet

Since the start of the 2023/24 season, which Arsenal and City opened with the Community Shield, they have played eight meetings, with half of them ending level after 90 minutes. And now, with both teams far from their best form, picking one of them is particularly difficult. So why not see them draw again, at least within 90 minutes? With the scores level late on, both managers will surely prefer not to take risks chasing a winner and instead wait calmly for a penalty shootout. That is why a draw at 3.60* looks like an interesting option.

    🚀 Player Stats Bet

Omar Marmoush had a poor World Cup, failing to contribute any goal involvements. But the Egyptian did complete a full pre-season with City and scored a brace in a recent match against Atletico. He will be eager to play while Erling Haaland builds up his fitness. It is a chance to impress the new manager. There are enough arguments to back Marmoush to score, especially at the very high odds of around 3.50*.

    🎯 Reliable Bet

In only 2 of the last 13 Community Shield matches have fans witnessed a goal fest. More often than not, teams simply are not ready to produce high-scoring games at the start of the season. The conclusion follows: total under 3.5 goals is the reliable bet we were looking for. It has landed in 20 consecutive Arsenal matches and in 9 of Manchester City's last 10 matches (excluding friendlies). It is available at odds of 1.35*.

👀 If the Match Goes Off Script

The clubs received roughly 26,000 tickets each, but Man City were unable to sell their allocation. As a result, Arsenal were handed more than 6,700 unsold seats. Preliminary estimates put the split of supporters inside the stadium at around 75% to 25% in favour of the London fans. This means the nominal away side will effectively be playing in a near home atmosphere. And if they cannot handle the pressure from the stands, an early goal is quite possible. A goal in the first 10 minutes is on offer at 4.30*.

*Odds are indicative and may vary across different bookmakers.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

Arsenal have a strong record against City in the Community Shield, and they also have the advantage of home support at the Millennium. However, the defensive problems that surfaced during pre-season prevent the Londoners from being considered favourites. City looked better in their friendly matches and over the past couple of seasons have learned to play without Rodri. That is why Arsenal's loss of William Saliba feels more significant.

Given that both sides are far from their optimal squads, we expect the managers to set up as cautiously as possible, and we will take a punt on a 1-1 draw. Though we would not be too surprised by a goalless draw at full time either - something that has not happened in the Community Shield since 2008. The optimal bet is under 2.5 goals. It has landed in 4 of Arsenal's last 5 official matches.
