Rangers vs St Mirren Prediction 16 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 In the Scottish League Cup last 16, Rangers will host St Mirren at Ibrox. For the home side, this is a chance to finally claim their first win of the official season after a very unconvincing start, while the reigning trophy holders come into the match on a two-game winning run. St Mirren have already played six matches in the new season and lost just one of them, so Rangers are not in for an easy ride.

    Rangers Team Overview

The start of the new season has been far more difficult than expected for Rangers. Derek McInnes's side have yet to win a single competitive match: after drawing with Dundee United in the first round of the Premiership, they lost to Hibernian and then drew 1:1 with Jagiellonia in the second leg of the Europa League qualifying round. That last result was particularly painful - Rangers were eliminated from European competition on aggregate, 2:3.

The problem for the team right now goes beyond results. There is a clear lack of cohesion and quality in Rangers' positional play. In their last four competitive matches, the side have scored four goals, with only one coming from open play. Against that backdrop, there are plenty of questions about the understanding between the new players and the attack, where Lawrence Shankland has yet to look like the leader many expected following his move.

That said, a home match against St Mirren gives Rangers an excellent chance to turn things around. Ibrox will surely put serious pressure on the visitors, and the extra motivation after the Europa League exit should push the hosts to play as aggressively as possible. Rangers still have a considerably stronger squad, so the question now is really whether the team can finally convert that advantage into results.

    St. Mirren Team Overview

St Mirren, on the other hand, have started the season almost perfectly. Craig Maclish's side have won five of their six official matches, scored 15 goals and conceded just four. The club came through the League Cup group stage with particular confidence, then began the league campaign with two wins. In the most recent round, St Mirren beat St Johnstone 1-0, having previously beaten Falkirk 2-0.

Their cup success last year deserves a special mention. St Mirren won the Scottish League Cup, knocking out Hearts, Kilmarnock, Motherwell and Celtic in succession on the way to the trophy. So the current competition is clearly not a secondary priority for the side: the visitors already know how to play against higher-profile opponents in a cup format, and they will certainly not be giving up the trophy without a fight.

The visitors' main weakness is the level of opposition they have faced. At the start of the season, St Mirren have not yet met a side from the upper half of the Premiership, so the trip to Ibrox will be their first serious test. The team have been dealing comfortably with their opponents so far, but now they will have to spend far longer without the ball and withstand sustained pressure.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

Based on current form, you could make a case for St Mirren, but in this match I am still going with Rangers. The hosts are highly motivated after their Europa League exit, and the gap in individual quality and squad depth remains significant.

That said, I do not see a straightforward Rangers win as an obvious bet. St Mirren are in excellent form, defensively solid, and have already shown they can beat stronger sides in cup matches. So I expect the visitors to put up a fight, especially in the first half. Main bet: both teams to score (yes) - it has landed in 12 consecutive Gers matches. Predicted score: 2-1 to the home side.
