UC Dublin vs Derry City Prediction 14 August 2026

Details
The main thing

🔊 UCD will host Derry City in the third round of the FAI Cup. The hosts compete in the First Division and sit third after 27 rounds, while the Northern Irish side are sixth in the Premier Division. The visitors come into this cup match following an important managerial change and a win over Sligo Rovers. UCD are also in good shape, heading into the game on the back of a win over Wexford. So the hosts should certainly not be underestimated, although the difference in class between the divisions remains the main argument in favour of Derry City.

    Head-to-Head

📊 The head-to-head record is clearly in Derry City's favour. According to available statistics, the two sides have played 16 official matches: UCD have won one, Derry - 14, with one draw. In September 2023, the Northern Irish side beat UCD twice convincingly: first away with a score of 5:0, and then at home - 6:0. That said, this is already history from three years ago, so it would be wrong to directly apply those results to the current match. UCD have changed since then and are now one of the strongest teams in the First Division.

    University College Dublin Team Overview

University are having a good season and after 27 rounds sit third in the First Division with 43 points. The team have won 13 matches, drawn four and lost 10, with a goal difference of 46:32. UCD are separated from second place only by goal difference.

The team looked particularly impressive in the last round. On 7 August, the College thrashed Wexford 4:1, with the hosts scoring twice before the break. Ciarán Behan grabbed a brace, while Luis Dignam and Hugh Smith added one goal each. Behan is UCD's main source of goals. He has already scored 12 times in the current championship, with Hugh Smith on seven. Both players are among the team's leading scorers and represent the main threat to the Derry City defence.

That said, University's form is not perfect. Before the Wexford thrashing, the team lost to Treaty United 1:2 in the league, and before that were beaten 0:6 by Bray Wanderers. So when up against a more intense and physically stronger opponent, the UCD defence can break down.

In the FAI Cup, the team started with a win over Treaty United - 2:1. UCD had to play away from home, which makes that result an additional positive ahead of the match with Derry. Another important factor is the home ground. The College know the artificial surface and the specifics of UCD Bowl well, while Derry will have to adapt to completely different conditions compared to their familiar Brandywell. So I would not look at this match as one where the Northern Irish side are guaranteed an easy win. UCD are capable of causing the favourites problems, especially if they can stay level in the first half.

    Derry City Team Overview

Derry City come into the FAI Cup after a rather turbulent period. The club recently parted ways with head coach Tiernan Lynch, with Mark Connolly, who had previously served as sporting director, taking charge as interim manager. Connolly's debut could not have gone better. On 7 August, Derry beat Sligo Rovers 2-0, with the team fully in control: 59% possession, 24 shots to four, and an xG advantage of 1.68 to 0.23. The goals came from Barry Cotter and Adam O'Reilly in the second half.

The win moved the northerners up to sixth place in the Premier Division with 33 points after 27 rounds. Their record stands at seven wins, 12 draws and eight defeats, with a goal difference of 35:32. Before that, though, Derry had endured a difficult European run. They were eliminated by CSKA Sofia on aggregate in Europa League qualifying, and then lost to Rijeka in Conference League qualifying. Lynch's departure followed shortly after.

So the win over Sligo matters beyond just the three points. Derry finally had the chance to turn a new page in their season, and they did so without conceding. Also worth noting is the situation surrounding James McClean. There has been speculation about the veteran's future at the club, though the player himself has stated he remains a Derry City player. He has missed the last three matches, and his involvement in the cup tie remains uncertain.

Either way, Derry's squad depth is significantly greater than UCD's. And if the team can carry the intensity they showed against Sligo into this cup match, the visitors' advantage will be a very serious one.

    ⭐ Editor's Pick

Here I favour the visitors. The main argument is the difference in level of competition. UCD are genuinely third in the First Division and have scored 46 goals in 27 rounds, but Derry regularly play against considerably stronger opposition and have a deeper squad.

That said, the hosts are in good form and have the advantage of their own ground. So I wouldn't expect a rout along the lines of those 5-0 and 6-0 results from their 2023 meetings.

The most likely scenario is that Derry gradually take control of the game. UCD are capable of holding their own in the first half, but after the break the difference in class should show more clearly. Prediction: Derry City win. Suggested score - 2:1.
